Given that Raffles disregards the monetary necessity of most of his crimes in literally the second story, it's interesting how often it comes up as a framework for their actions. There's often this sense that whatever caper is being planned absolutely has to be executed. Bunny continues to offer excuses pertaining to his pocketbook and debts well into the third book, but Raffles is much more inclined to cite fate as the driving force behind his fixations, like he believes he is inescapably tethered to this life and to each new crime, pulled forward by the gods.

It's just a very stark contrast to the way he talks about his crimes in a costume piece, where he views himself as the orchestrator and director of each one, the artist behind every picked lock and cut window. As time goes by he views himself as less and less in control, willingly more in the hands of fate, obeying the impulses and taking the chances he assigns to a higher design with steadily decreasing input from the logical parts of him which used to at least form those impulses and chances to his own best interest.

By Earl's Court and the gold cup he's just so desperate for a goal, for something new to surmount and revel in, that he latches onto the idea of himself as a perfect thief; dead and drowned to start, with a steadfast alibi for any time, and an alias that would grind any suspicious to dust. He starts to think of it as his purpose in a way he didn't used to, like fate has put him in this position, where his greatest success would come from thievery, and to ignore that would be to defy the divine.

like i literally love when im at work and kids come in all excited and grab stacks and stacks of books to check out……like the other day this one kid came out to check out the entire magic tree house series and kept running back to get more. i talk to a lot of kids when im checking books out for them abt warrior cats. ik there’s a big problem w kids and technology but i will say that there’s a lot of kids out there who still get so much joy out of reading and its so good to see

I never watched BBC Sherlock or engaged in the fandom and being into original Sherlock Holmes in the year 2024 feels like frolicking in a meadow that’s grown up over a battlefield. Occasionally a war weary veteran with shadows in their eyes will find me. “Don’t you know what happened in this place?” they ask me. “I literally don’t,” I reply, and go back to drawing guys from 1895.
