Looking back, the social rewrite around the musical Dear Evan Hansen was one of the first big warning signs in fandom spaces that there was a massive literacy crisis coming. Because if you talked to musical theatre fans they would have you convinced that this is a play that spends its entirety trying to convince you Evan Hansen is a good person when in reality the play spends its entirety trying to do the opposite. Evan is portrayed as sympathetic yes, but that’s bc he is. He is a teenage boy going through a mental health crisis who gets caught writing a therapy exercise by another teenager also going through a mental health crisis. He never intended to lie to Connor’s family he just genuinely did not know what to do in that moment, most of us would not know what to do if our private therapy exercise was found and interpreted that way especially as teenagers. That’s not to say Evan’s lie is ok but it’s never treated as ok by the play. The entire play his friend helps him cover up this lie but he also repeatedly tells him to just tell the truth. We see Evans life fall apart in every aspect because of how big this lie becomes. The fact that a play entirely about teenage mental health crises and the consequences that come with them has been so demonized as normalizing lying is a glaring example of the literacy crisis we’re currently facing.

And none of this is to say that the play is perfect, no true piece of art is without flaws it comes with being made by a breathing person; but it’s deeply concerning to me how many people truly believe and regurgitate that this play is a harmful piece of media that we shouldn’t engage with unless we say it’s bad. You don’t even have to sympathize with the MCs, but to say the play portrays them as good people is crazy.

My biggest tinfoil hat conspiracy that I believe with my whole chest and will NOT be convinced otherwise is that a significant portion of modern queer community infighting is a scheme by Big Homophobia to weaken us from the inside and it pisses me off sm that it’s working

I'll never stop complaining about stolen audio jacks, but wireless noise-cancelling earbuds/headphones are a game changer. (even cheap ones! you can get a surprisingly decent pair for under $40. the tech has improved so much recently.)

The world is LOUD, much louder than it was just a century ago (motorized vehicles, overhead music everywhere). I'm autistic and noise-cancelling tech is what allows me to exist in public spaces. For me it's been life-changing. I honestly think most people would be less anxious/stressed if they were able to turn down the sound around them.
