the debate on who can use the terms “butch/femme” keeps coming up so i did a ton of research & i’d like to weigh in on the issue. i’ll post sources at the end
too many people credit anne lister (a historical lesbian) with coining femme in her journals but she was speaking french and “femme” has been a french word forever
going in chronological order of gay words in the english-speaking world, “lesbian” began as a synonym for tribade. “tribadism” = scissoring; both words meant women who slept with women & the sexual act itself. this was long before IDpolitics
so lesbian/tribade was something you did, not something you IDd as, bc they were labeled by their sexual activity since IDpol hadn’t come around yet. there was no concept of who was or wasn’t exclusively attracted to women. that’s why bi women are closer to lesbians than bi men
tribade dominated the 17th-mid 19th centuries until sapphic & lesbian took prominence. it wasn’t until 1892 that a neurologist used bisexual to describe sexuality. from then until the 1960s, bi was used only in academic contexts. it still wasn’t an identity yet
bi women have always been here but shared community with & organized under “lesbian” until (and even into) the 60s. before then, any text or study that said “lesbian” meant gay & bi women unless it (on the rare occasion) specifies otherwise, so context matters
butch/femme began in gay bars in the 40s-60s. women-only gay bars were frequented by lesbian & bi women. so for the first decades of butch/femme history, “lesbian” includes bi women bc there was no bi or “women-exclusive” yet & they were at the bars, participating in the culture
in the 70s, lesbian separatism begins with 12 white cis lesbians, the furies. They suggest that women engage “only (with) women who cut their ties to male privilege… as long as women still benefit from heterosexuality, receive its privileges and security, they will…
at some point have to betray their sisters, especially lesbian sisters who do not receive those benefits.” demon TERF sheila jeffreys says “our definition of a political lesbian is a woman-identified woman who does not fuck men.” this marks the split between bi & lesbian women
lesbian separatism others bi women who shared space, identity & oppression with lesbians centuries prior. it deems trans women as inextricable from male privilege they (don’t) have. it others lgbt woc who share oppression with men & therefore can’t exclude men from their politics
tldr it’s bad lol. with events like stonewall (1969) & increasing anti-gay violence in the 70s, anyone with proximity to heterosexuality in gay spaces was viewed as a threat & shunned. so bi groups begin to pop up, since they had no place in straight or gay communities anymore
in the 80s, 2nd-wave bi organizing was feminist bi orgs forming bc lesbians posited bisexuality as anti-feminist. by 1988, LGB officially separates lesbian & bi. now lesbians are invested in specific lesbian history & everything before the 60s says “lesbian.” see the problem here
texts with the word “lesbian” before the 60s are also referring to bi women but modern meanings of old words are applied to them, & consequently, bi women are denied a massive chunk of our history, including butch/femme culture
in the 60s, ball culture emerges in houses created as safe spaces for black & latinx queer youth. the genders are butch queen, femme queen, butch & women. here, butch & femme embody: the intersections of race, gender & sexuality; the freedom of it; and the resulting persecution
in the 70s, lesbian separatists say any form of masculinity harms women, materializing against butch & trans women. femmes are framed as wanting to reap benefits of heterosexuality while still toying with women (this is heavily wrapped in biphobic rhetoric too, if you can’t tell)
butch/femme is framed as heteronormative, anti-lesbian & anti-feminist. so androgyny is proposed as the lesbian ideal. now lesbian feminism is centered on white, middle class, androgynous lesbians at the expense of working class + nonwhite lesbians, bi women, and butches & femmes
butch/femme fall out of popular use, only kept alive by the same working class & nonwhite women who are ousted by white lesbians. butch/femme usage among queer youth of color includes lesbians & nonlesbians as it had since 60s ball culture & since 40s gay bars with gay & bi women
it’s interesting that people say butch/femme is for lesbians only when the beginning of lesbian as an exclusively-woman attracted identity & the downfall of butch/femme go hand-in-hand. it was queer youth of color who kept that culture alive, lesbian or not
white lesbian TERFs who demonized the culture embraced it again when genderfluidity became trendy in the late 80s. they claimed it as theirs, and stripped it of its history with bi women, trans women & queer youth of color that they wanted no association with
so that history was lost among many, and now well-meaning lesbians who definitely are not TERFs don’t even know butch/femme’s roots in race, trans/gnc identity, & class struggle, or its origins among gay & bi women as one group
tldr: TERFs suck, bi & lesbian women’s history is inextricable, and bi women were using butch/femme before the bi identity even existed. historically, “lesbian” encompassed a set of behaviors & became an identity later

men: *decided women weren’t allowed attend schools, study sciences, or have access to higher education* men: well if women are so smart then how come there aren’t many contributions from women in history huh
This post means well, but still erases women’s contributions in the same way men have. The truth is that women have made so many contributions to history and science despite men denying them access, but that men have either taken credit for those accomplishments or, when they couldn’t, completely divorced that accomplishment from the woman so that no one remembers them.
In fact, this happens so often that there’s even a name for it. It’s called the Matilda Effect which is defined as “the systematic repression and denial of the contribution of woman scientists in research, whose work is often attributed to their male colleagues” but which applies to other fields as well and goes doubly for women of color. How about just a few (certainly nowhere near all) women who contributed to science? And this is just science, not even history in the larger sense.

The absence of women in history is man made.
Bisexual people make up a majority of the queer community. But bisexuals are much less likely to be out than gay men and lesbians. Those who are out are constantly silenced from both inside and outside of the LGBTQ+ community for talking about their experiences with homophobia and biphobia, and have their bisexuality erased by media, including LGBTQ+ media.
Think about that next time you want to say ‘bisexual people aren’t affected by [issue] as much as gay people and don’t need to be included’ in order to silence us talking about bi erasure, and think of how that erasure itself contributes to your belief that bisexual people aren’t as affected.
I’ve talked to so many bi and questioning people who believed bisexuality was ‘almost nonexistent’ as they knew hardly any bi people, if any.
This is not the case. Bisexuality is much more common than society wants us to believe. You are not alone. 💜
To answer the question “why does this not include ___ folk”: this stat is from a study back in 2011. I did not design the study.
I’d love if there were a more recent version with more genders/sexualities, but it’s beyond my power to make one, and telling me off for a study done many years ago that I didn’t design isn’t productive.
I can’t find the stat but I feel like I previously saw a study which showed that bisexuals have some of the least amount of $ allocated to helping them of the more well known identities.
^I don’t have the stat on hand, but that’s true. We get almost no funding. Some years we’ve gotten none.

In Mexico City, gay and lesbian couples can adopt since 2009. Yesterday the Mexican Supreme Court rulled that same sex couples are a family model recognized by the Constitution, and therefore, they have the right to adpot in all of Mexico. I saw a lot of posts about this here and on other social networks and there is so much hate towards asexuals (especially from inside the LGBT community), that I really need to get this off my chest.
My girlfriend is ace, I´m an average lesbian with an average sexual desire. And you know what? I´m totally fine with that.
We have a realtionship like everybody else, except we don´t have sex. We cuddle, go to the movies, go on trips together, laugh a lot, game, hold hands, kiss, everything. In short - we´re happy.
And then there are people. I even consider some of them my friends and they know about all of that and even though, I constantly get comments like
“Don´t you miss that?”
“You should finally make a move.”
“Time you get laid again.”
“Maybe you should get yourself a ‘normal’ girl.”
“Oh god, I couldn´t live like that. I´m sorry for you.”
Yes, that are actual quotes from actual people. And yes - those words hurt! Because you are lowkey implying, that I can´t be happy in a relationship without sex and at the same time, you blame my girlfriend for that, even though I just told you, that we´re happy.
Her body wasn´t the reason I picked her.
I picked her, because she makes me smile, when I feel down. I picked her because of those beautiful sparkles in her eyes. I picked her because of her endless fangirling and Elder Scrolls obsession, her love for space and stars, because of the way she snuggles into my arms at night, because she is so damn perfect to me.
Why would I expect her to change who she is? How could I pressure her into doing something she isn´t comfortable with? I knew she was ace and I knew what I got myself into and it doesn´t bother me. I love her and I want her to be happy and for her to be able to always feel safe with me. That´s what counts.
My girl and me had a lot of talks on that topic. She was scared and she cried a lot and she had a lot of things on her mind because of that. I felt bad because of that. I felt bad, because she thought, she´d eventually have to have sex in order to be part of a healthy relationship. That´s what society tells us everyday - that sex is an important part of a relationship. It´s like a constant pressure on everybody, but I think it´s the worst for asexuals.
Seriously, there´s sex without love, why can´t there be love without sex?
They´re constantly told, that there´s something wrong with them. Everyone tells them, that they´re too young or they should try it or haven´t found the right person yet. It even is considered a mental disease!!
Wait a second? Does that sound familiar?
Yeah, right! How do you know you like girls, if you never had a boy? Or the other way round? Maybe you try being straight first? How about you finally decide, if you like boys or girls, rather than being half straight and half gay. Did those things hurt you, when you heard them? I sure heard them and yeah, they hurt.
In the end, we all want to be accepted and loved.
How can you love someone, when you can´t even love yourself, because of all the negativity that is stuck in your head. All the insults, the pressure, the intolerance.People kill themselves because of that! How can you do that?
How can you expect to be accepted, if you don´t accept others, if you constantly need to show others how much better you are. You want to be respected, show some respect first! It´s not that hard.
Don´t call someone a fag, just because he´s gay. Don´t call the girl over there a lesbian, because she has short hair. Let the trans people pee in peace. Don´t act superior, only because you´re straight. Don´t blame black people for your shit. This list could go on for pages.
We´re all the same. We´re all humans.
The world would be such a better place, if everyone started to behave like an average human being, stop being so goddamn fixed on labels and decide to be less horrible to each other.
I accept and respect my ace girlfriend. I don´t care about the sexual side, even though I miss that sometimes, but there are so many things that can be way more intimate than sex.
A relationship is based on love and trust and supporting each other, not on what goes down in the bedroom. You should remember that the next time, you make a comment on someones lifestyle, decision, orientation or anything else.

Growing up as an avid reader one thing I was definitely missing on my shelf was the work of black LGBT authors. Even though there are many out there, their work is not often placed at the front of book stores, and adapted into feature films. Many of us will never hear about them if we do not actively search, so putting together this list felt necessary. We are in a new year, and I’m making it a priority to read as many Black LGBT authors as possible. This list has authors that I already love, and some that I have just discovered. Some I would consider classics (Baldwin and Lorde), and some are fledgling writers who will hopefully go down in literary history like their predecessors. I’ll be adding more to it as the year goes on, and periodically posting book reviews. Hopefully you’ll find something that peaks their interest.

At Target this lady told her son he couldn’t have a Wonder Woman doll because “that’s for girls” and then bought her daughter the same one. It got me thinking about how often I see people bar young boys from appreciating girls/women as protagonists and heroes, and my own experience with it as a kid.
That’s how people live.
compulsory heterosexuality and general heteronormativity leads bi women to be isolated from each other, from other gay women, and from other lgbt more generally. because straight people erase bi women, a lot of them have a very difficult time finding women to date and cohabit with. moreover, compulsory heterosexuality itself obscures the reality for bi women that they can actually love women and choose to be with them. some of them end up dating men (or more men than women) for this reason. straight men abuse bi women because they seek to possess their bisexuality, force their love for women out of them, display their masculinity through violence, power, and control, and assert their dominance. moreover, because straight men feel emasculated by homophobic & biphobic stereotypes surrounding bi women (that bi women are going to cheat on their partners and deceive them), they project the embitterment and humiliation of feeling emasculated onto their female bisexual partners. this is exactly why the rates of IPV against bi women are so high.
so, bi women are abused because of homophobia and misogyny, and some of them have only ever dated men because of homophobia. it’s the same reason why there are gay men and lesbians who have been in heterosexual relationships before - heteronormativity obfuscates any nonheterosexual feeling to the point that we force ourselves to be in heterosexual and only heterosexual relationships. and no, bi women are not abused because they’re “idiots” who are “asking to get abused” by “taking the easy way out” and dating a man. that is absolutely not why they are abused, and in fact it’d be remiss to call yourself a feminist if you think blaming any woman for her abuse is a good thing (yes, even when that abuse takes place in an m/f relationship, contrary to what your paltry little radical cultural feminists would have you believe ).

“A long-term study of children raised by lesbians found that these children were less likely to suffer from physical and sexual abuse than were their peers who were raised by heterosexuals. This is thought to be due to the absence of adult heterosexual men in the households (Gartrell, Bos, & Goldberg, 2010). Girls raised by lesbians tend to have higher self-esteem, show more maturity and tolerance than their peers, and are older when they have their first heterosexual contact (Gartrell et al., 2005, 2010). Children raised by same-sex parents seem to be less constrained by traditional gender roles; boys are less aggressive, and girls are more inclined to consider nontraditional careers, such as doctor, lawyer, or engineer (Gartrell et al., 2005; Stacey & Biblarz, 2001). Over the course of more than 20 years, scientists studied the psychological adjustment of 78 teenagers who were raised by lesbian mothers. Compared to age-matched counterparts raised by heterosexual parents, these adolescents were rated higher in social, academic, and total competence, and lower in social problems, rule-breaking, aggression, and externalizing problem behavior (Gartrell & Bos, 2010). There are fewer studies of children raised by two men, but gay fathers are more likely than straight fathers to put their children before their career, to make big changes in their lives to accommodate a child, and to strengthen bonds with their extended families after becoming fathers (Bergman, Rubio, Green, & Padrone, 2010).” ~ Martha Rosenthal, Human Sexuality: From Cells to Society, p.247.
