For people who forget: the whole thing of being transgender is that you identify with a gender that isn’t your sex/what you were born as. Because no one is assigned nonbinary at birth, being nonbinary is inherently transgender because you’re not cis about it.

words change meaning over time, usually toward being more specific/useful. in the same way queer used to mean weird or strange and then as a slur against non-cishet people and now a non-offensive umbrella term for non-cishet people, the contemporary use of trans doesn’t really suggest anything other than transgender in the context of the transition. as more people are given more vocabulary to describe their experiences and identities, the words we use are going to become more specific as other words are brought in to provide further nuance. what once was an umbrella term (trans) has become more specific (those who are transitioning or have transitioned), a useful distinction since non-binary has been introduced. also who cares what the flag’s creator says the colors represent? the meanings of symbols are determined by those who use them, not the people who created them.
