The Burning Light is an AU Warriors fanfiction written by @boomtowne
It's focused around the idea of "what if Scourge killed Firestar in the battle against BloodClan, and how would this change in canon affect the Warriors universe over thirty years later?"
About me!
Ao3 link here!
Generations after Firestar’s untimely death and the clan’s exile from their home, Scourge’s descendants have turned BloodClan into an unstoppable force, where any cat who doesn’t submit will be met with a terrible fate; all the while the clans have enjoyed peace from the city cats, now dismissing their past threat as nothing more than a story to scare the kits. Sunny and Blossom, two residents of the city who had spent their entire lives evading BloodClan, seek refuge with the cats of ThunderClan after being separated from their sole guardian and protector. Though things are great, Sunny finds herself unable to receive the acceptance and approval she wants from the clan cats, especially from an apprentice named Pinepaw. After three months of sanctuary, BloodClan suddenly attacks, raising questions regarding their unclear motives, the safety of all four clans, and on top of that, whether Sunny and Blossom will ever be able to escape BloodClan’s wrath.

Aside from cats like Firestar and Scourge, the cast of The Burning Light is made up of entirely original characters. If you would like to learn more about them and be able to keep track of them all easier, I'm working on making pages for all the characters!

History
The Burning Light was originally conceived as a collaborative fanfic project on DeviantArt over ten years ago now. Many of the roles in the story (if you could even call it that) were taken by OC's that friends of mine submitted. I would write the fanfic one chapter at a time, including the stories of all the OC's with the idea that someday all the roles would be taken by fully developed characters made by a large group of people.
In the end, this idea fell through as I started to grow up and slowly lost contact with many of the friends I had made on DA. A few years after I originally started this project, I fell in love with it again and began to rewrite it from the ground up as my own personal project with a more concrete story, my own personal characters, and decided to make it an AU.
For years, I've been slowly working away at this story, coming up with new ideas and new characters. And now, ten years after it's original conception, The Burning Light has finally come out!
Firestar, ThunderClan’s leader, leads the four clans into battle against BloodClan. With the forest territories and the safety of the clans hanging in the balance, he fears he'll be unable to locate Scourge and be the fire that will save the clans.

As he tore across the flat terrain, Firestar felt a chill rush down his spine; his fur bristling with fear and desperation. He frantically scanned the endless sea of battle, eyes darting side to side, but the cat he was searching for was nowhere to be found. He stopped in his tracks and attempted to calm his pounding heart, but before the thundering in his chest quieted, he was tackled to the ground by an opponent.
The tom-cat loomed above him, unsheathing his claws and rearing forward as he attempted to sink his teeth into Firestar’s neck. With all his strength, he flung the attacking cat off him, but that wasn’t enough to stop his opponent. The cat’s teeth-studded collar glinted in the dawn’s light menacingly as he raced forward, hissing and yowling. Firestar unsheathed his claws and swiped hard across the cat’s muzzle and nose. The cat let out a cry of pain as he shook the blood from his eyes and raced away.
The flame-colored tom let out a sigh of relief and allowed his body to relax for just a moment as he looked around. There was still no sign of the cat he was looking for. His head drooped as he resigned himself to failure. The clans were easily outnumbered by the BloodClan cats, especially now when so many had been unnecessarily slaughtered in the battle. Scourge was the key to ending this, his leadership was the one thing that kept these city cats together, but now that the battle raged around him, he now worried that he was doomed to fail from the beginning.
“What if the clans lose before I can even find him?” he thought. Bluestar and Spottedleaf said he was supposed to be the fire that would save the clans, StarClan told them so, but what if StarClan was wrong? Could they be wrong? He could hardly believe the things he was thinking; StarClan being wrong? They can’t be wrong. Would Spottedleaf lie to him? Or Bluestar? Yellowfang? Any StarClan cat? He had known these cats in life, but could they have changed in death? What dark secrets did the stars hold? Though his anxious thoughts didn’t cease, he pushed them away, knowing this was no time to be doubting his ancestors.
Firestar let out a shaky sigh as his head drooped but his eyes grew wide at the sight before him. His paws were stained red with the blood of Whitestorm, his friend, former deputy, and source of wisdom since he had first stepped foot into ThunderClan. A wave of grief crashed over Firestar as he remembered his dear friend, who had been killed in the very battle the clans were now trapped in. “No more warriors must die like he did,” he vowed to himself. “This ends now.”
Firestar began to search the battlefield again and luckily for him, it wasn’t long before his eyes locked onto the black-furred cat he was searching for. He looked down into the hollow of Fourtrees and watched as Scourge, the leader of BloodClan loomed over a mottled light brown tom-cat who was backed up against the Great Rock. He gasped in recognition; it was Onewhisker! Without hesitation, he shot down into the dipped earth and flew at Scourge with a yowl.
He sunk his teeth into the scruff of the smaller cat and flung him away. Scourge skidded across the dust and dirt as he staggered back to his feet. Firestar stepped closer and locked eyes with Scourge, his icy-blue gaze burning into Firestar.
“Onewhisker, go!” He ordered his friend. The brown cat stood without hesitation and raced away, leaving Firestar alone to face his enemy. Scourge looked up at Firestar, a hint of amusement glinting in his cold stare.
“Firestar…” Scourge acknowledged his attacker.
“I won’t let this battle continue any longer. Your cats have slain too many noble warriors and I refuse to let this forest fall into your paws,” Firestar spoke fiercely, determination coursing through him.
“My cats are hungry and desperate, it’s written all over their faces. You can’t bring an end to BloodClan without going through every last one of them,” Scourge spat back, his voice as cold as ice.
Firestar’s body sagged as he let out a heavy sigh. “I know I cannot take down all of BloodClan, but I can take down you.”
Scourge didn’t give Firestar a moment to think before he lunged at him, trapping the larger tom-cat beneath his paws. Firestar struggled to move but was able to free his back legs and with all of his strength, he kicked Scourge off of him. He scrambled to his paws and raced over to Scourge where their fight continued. With every swipe, scratch, and strike the realization that he was trapped in a fight with no escape sunk in more and more. If he fled or failed it was all over.
A sharp gasp of pain escaped from Firestar’s mouth as he hit the ground with a thud, pain radiating from his back. He coughed and wheezed as he fought to get up and shake off the attack but as he opened his eyes he realized Scourge was preparing his next move. He was reared up on his hind legs, white-tipped paw raised high in the air, prepared to strike.
Firestar’s eyes widened in horror as he saw Scourge’s reinforced claws glinting red with blood. He remembered all too well how it was those same claws that had ruthlessly slain Tigerstar just three days ago; those claws were able to drain all nine of his StarClan-granted lives without mercy.
Firestar was frozen in place as Scourge’s claws began to descend toward his exposed belly and an overwhelming surge of panic went through him. The world slowed, “Why can’t I move? I need to move now!” his thoughts raced through his mind as quick as lightning. “I have to save my clan!”
...
“Ah!” a shrill yowl sounded in the air. Coughing and sputtering, a brown-and-dark ginger tortoiseshell she-cat collapsed onto her side. “I, the legendary Firestar, have… perished,” she rasped dramatically, letting her head fall onto the soft ground.
A small tabby kit with brown-and-cream tortoiseshell fur clumsily clambered on top of the older cat and cackled. “You filthy, flea-ridden forest cats must leave! BloodClan has won this battle and now these territories belong to me!” she puffed her fluffy-furred chest out proudly and held her head up high.
Standing to the side of the two other cats, a pale ginger-colored cat continued the reenactment in a stiff, monotone voice. “Oh no, whatever shall we do now? It seems we must find a new home.”
“Sandstone!” The kitten mewled in protest and plopped down onto the ground with a pout. “You don’t sound convincing at all.”
Sandstone exhaled in frustration as they rolled their amber eyes. “Maplebriar, why in StarClan’s name did you drag me into this?”
“Don’t you think playing with kits is fun?” the brown-and-dark ginger tortoiseshell replied in a high-pitched, peppy voice. “I thought you’d enjoy it.”
Sandstone scoffed in response, “We’re warriors! This is a job for the queens and elders, we’re supposed to fight and feed the clan.”
Sitting on the outside of the reenactment, two brown-furred nursery queens sat in their nests.
“Haven’t those two only been warriors for four moons?” the lighter brown tabby she-cat muttered with a light chuckle, leaning over to the other nursery queen.
“Mm-hmm,” the older dark brown tabby nodded with an amused purr. “Though you’re not that much older, Brindlewing.”
“You’re missing the point, Mother,” the light brown tabby answered dryly, a hint of humor in her voice.
“We can do other things, Sandstone!” Maplebriar continued the argument between her and her sibling.
“Knock it off!” the kit squealed in protest before spinning around and looking at her mother. “Did you like it?”
Brindlewing stared at the scene which was laid out in front of her in slight concern. “Well, of course I did. I’m… uh-” she struggled to find the words to continue. “I’m happy and proud of you for listening so well to the stories the elders have told you, Finchkit’’ she finished with a forced purr.
Finchkit let out a loud gasp. “Did you hear that, Maplebriar? She liked it!”
“I knew she would, you’re such a good storyteller!” the warrior answered with a purr.
“I’m sure Finchkit has had fun but it’s getting late and she needs to get to sleep” Brindlewing spoke, reaching her paw out and pulling Finchkit closer.
“But I’m not even tired, Mama!” Finchkit whined but Brindlewing didn’t reply, instead beginning to clean her of any dirt she had gotten in her fur earlier in the day. Sandstone and Maplebriar left the nursery, the den getting quiet as the bickering of the two littermates faded off into the distance. It was then that Finchkit got abnormally quiet. Brindlewing looked down and noticed her uneasy expression and posture.
“What’s wrong? You’re not upset just because you need to sleep, are you?” her mother questioned, tilting her head.
“No,” Finchkit shuffled her small paws. “Is all that stuff about BloodClan real?”
Brindlewing looked to the other nursery queen sitting beside her, seemingly trying to get the other to help her.
“Yes, it’s all true; but we lost our old territory a long, long time ago. All those who remember the old territories died before my lifetime,” the older nursery queen answered honestly.
“What if BloodClan is gonna try and take our home like they did before, Grandma?” the kit squealed in fear, lowering herself to the ground.
“There’s nothing to worry about, my love,” Finchkit’s grandmother, Robinflower purred. “Even if they were strong, we’d be able to fight them off. We won’t make the same mistakes we did then.”
“Besides, if they do come back, we need a strong warrior like you to help protect us,” Brindlewing purred, nudging Finchkit up with her muzzle. “And anyone can be a strong warrior.”
The kit gasped in realization. “You’re right! I have to grow up to be the strongest warrior I can be, that way I can beat up those yucky BloodClan cats if they ever try to come back!”
“And do you know what that means?” Brindlewing questioned, a glimmer of amusement in her green eyes.
“What?”
“It means you need to get some sleep,” the lighter brown she-cat answered. “You need to grow up big and strong if you want to be a warrior and the best way to do that is by getting good rest.”
“All right,” Finchkit complied, curling up beside her mother in their mossy nest. Only a few moments had passed when the kitten spoke up again, this time in a sleepy whisper. “If BloodClan really comes back, I’ll beat them up so hard they’ll never wanna come back again!”
"Looks like ShadowClan and RiverClan are already here," a voice from behind noted, who Sunpaw recognized as Sandstone. "But that can't be all of WindClan is it?"
"No way," Sandstone's sister, Redfrost answered. "There's hardly a pawful of their warriors. Dawnstar and that spineless deputy of hers aren't even here."
Sandstone is currently one of the youngest warriors in ThunderClan alongside their two littermates, Sandstone and Redfrost. They're the kit of Morningstar, the clan leader, and Firestrike, another ThunderClan warrior. They're a stoic and tough cat and believe with all their heart that being the clan leader's kit means they're destined to attain the rank of leader someday and have gone out of their way to attempt to achieve that, without breaking the code of course.
“Hey, Maplebriar!” the voice of the tall brown tabby spoke up, excitement in her voice.
“Briarshine!” Maplebriar exclaimed excitedly. “Who’s that you got with you?”
“This is my new apprentice, Tawnypaw,” she purred back.
As she introduced the apprentice, he shyly shrunk into himself. As he did, he made eye contact with Sunny and she gave him a friendly flick of her ear.
“An apprentice? Congratulations! That’s great news!” Maplebriar exclaimed.
“Wasn’t that already announced at the last gathering?” Mistlefang asked in a whisper to Ridgefang.
“Yes.”
“And wasn’t she there at the last gathering?” he asked again.
Ridgefang sighed. “Yes.”
Maplebriar is currently the youngest warrior in ThunderClan alongside her two littermates, Sandstone and Redfrost— but especially so considering she's the youngest of their litter. She's the daughter of Morningstar, the clan leader, and Firestrike, another ThunderClan warrior, and is known for her friendly and sweet personality... despite her being relatively ignorant and dim-witted.
Robinflower is a ThunderClan senior warrior; she is both the mother to main characters Blackpaw and Specklepaw and the grandmother to Finchpaw. She is a motherly, loving, yet tough she-cat and is mates with the ThunderClan warrior, Sprucethorn. The two had two litters of kits together, the first being Brindlewing and Mistlefang, and the young Blackpaw and Specklepaw.

Brindlewing is a ThunderClan warrior and is the mother to the main character Finchpaw. She is a kind and responsible she-cat and became a mother at a young age alongside her mate, Appleheart. Her parents are ThunderClan senior warriors, Sprucethorn and Robinflower, she's littermates with the warrior Mistlefang, and is the older sister to her parents younger litter, Blackpaw and Specklepaw. She was initially mentored by Morningstar, but was later switched over to Ridgefang due to Morningstar's pregnancy.
“Anyway Finchpaw,” Blackpaw spoke up, clearly trying to get the apprentice to talk about something else. “What do you think your warrior name will be?”
“Well, I’m awesome, so I’m bound to get something cool,” she joked. “I’d like Finchpounce, or Finchtalon, or Finchsoar, or Finchclaw, or Finch—”
“We get the idea, thank you,” Specklepaw mewed.
Finchpaw is one of the main characters of The Burning Light. When Sunny and Blossom first arrived in ThunderClan, it was Finchpaw who first approached them with the intent of becoming friends. From then on, they've been close with not only her but the rest of the ThunderClan apprentice group, other than Pinepaw of course. Energetic, friendly, and humorous, Finchpaw is widely loved across ThunderClan.

The Burning Light: Shadowed Deceit
Leaf-bare has arrived in the forest and Sunwish and Blossomdawn are now warriors, but Blossomdawn has extreme concerns; concerns that become all the more apparent after remembering her mother's final words to her. BloodClan isn't done with the forest clans and it's only a matter of time before they return. When her theory is proven correct, she concocts an insane plan; to spy on BloodClan from inside their own borders with a companion of her own... however Sunwish is injured, and she knows well how disastrous her dear friend's last venture into BloodClan had gone. She turns to the only other cat she can think of to handle this mission, Pinemoon, and the two venture into the depths of BloodClan to sneak their way into the city cat's society with the help of a very unexpected ally. Meanwhile, Sunwish is handling Blossomdawn's absence poorly and attempts to throw herself at any problem to give herself a distraction. When a respected WindClan warrior is found dead on his own territory at the same time a troubled young warrior named Thornstrike goes missing, Sunwish leaps into action to try and help. Recruiting Finchflight, Tawnyheart, and Brightshade, she works to aid Thornstrike's sister, Frostspring, and prove the tom-cat's innocence. Despite her efforts, there's clearly more going on here than meets the eye and WindClan's murder mystery may be more linked to Blossomdawn's spy mission than anyone would assume...
Aand there's a little preview of what you can all expect in the next act. Shadowed Deceit goes from chapters 12 to 27 and as I had mentioned in the past over on YouTube, Blossomdawn joins Sunwish as a joint POV for the rest of the fic!
Please give The Burning Light a read if you can, it's my passion project at the moment and this act in particular has some of my favorite stuff ever. I tend to not like the middle of stories as much as the beginning and end, and yet Shadowed Deceit might be my favorite act of The Burning Light. I love this section of the story so much, so please give it some love as the chapters come out!

"And you don't think I want that as well?" Blossom huffed. "We're still our own cats, and we deserve to chose what we do. I want to listen to what you have to say, Sunny, and I think the same goes for you with me. I want to follow you too."
Blossom is the second POV character in The Burning Light. After the death of her parents as a kit, she was taken in by Ahi and was raised alongside Sunny. They were later separated from Ahi when they were attacked by BloodClan cats and found the clans after escaping the city. She's very intelligent, skilled in hunting, and is skilled in strategy.
"How could she be so wonderful? Even after everything that’s happened and every mistake I've made, Blossom is still here. Ahi saved me, gave me a new life, and raised me, so it’s only fair I follow in what she did. Blossom, I promise to protect you. No matter what."
Sunny is the first of the four POV characters in The Burning Light.
She was born in the city and was forced to endure the reign of BloodClan but was able to escape the city with her companion, Blossom, after they were separated from Sunny's adoptive mother, Ahi, in a BloodClan attack. She's a strong fighter, but is very insecure, wanting the surrounding cats more than anything to like and respect her.
