i'm interested in reading your fic Crossing Lines but the MCD tag scares me. is it an unhappy ending where one or more of them stay dead? if is it canonical death, like dean ending up in Hell or Cas dying in 15x18? *sending love*

Okay, it has been long enough that I think I can answer this in a post. Serious spoilers below the cut.

No hard feelings if this isn't the right fic for you right now.

So, basically, 26 year old Dean sacrifices himself for Cas. He does die, but we do learn after that younger Dean was in fact an "echo"; this copy of him was always going to fade out/disappear from this time. Because of reasons, we suspect that this copy of Dean's soul, rather than going to heaven/hell when he dies, slips back into the time stream and re-merges with 26 year old Dean in his own timeline. (26D: "but I won't remember you, right?" Cas: "I think.... I think maybe you *do*" 41D: *cue crisis*)

Everyone else lives (well, Jack does become god (sort of) so idk if that counts, but he's not dead) (and the Cas/Empty death scene happen in the epilogue, but it's temporary), and they get to go through the non-linear process of healing and figuring out how to actually live. I wanted to give Dean both the death he deserved (surrounded by people who love him and will mourn him) and the life he deserved. The life bit happens in the sequel/epilogue.

other things that get me are how 15x09 features an angel trap (not a ring of fire, a trap) in the wilderness, in a land of total war, of (God’s) abandonment…

Cas was lured into a ring of blossoms, into a tiny garden he wanted to use to protect his human fam… and then Dean awoke to Cas gone and that little grove scorched.

After Dean’s prayer, Cas was energized; he got the blossom and fought, because Dean’s prayer is the blossom in so many ways. Their initial meeting was born from Dean’s resurrection. It’s literally a love grown from death, from ashes, over and over again!

and then! visually 15x18 Dean and Cas enter, in Dean’s words, “another trap.”

This is echoed visually, as they’re inside a Devil’s trap now, with Dean’s feet still-in-it at the end. The devil’s trap inside a dungeon, a place of (God’s) torture.

Two traps. And aborted love confession and a clearly verbalized testament of love.

The traps are in essence the very same, only… one got sprung.

What I meant to say before... but couldn't really put into words is that The Trap was the original trap.

Dean was supposed to spring it, but Cas cut him off "I heard your prayer," etc. Cas led them to Purgatory, where Dean (almost) said I love you. And later, Dean led them to Death, where Cas said I love you.

Cas in essence spared Dean the pain of being the one to directly trigger the deal.

Where's that post about how the entire show is encapsulated by the first episode? John is the woman in white etc. Really thinking about the first season in relation to the whole show (which for the record I have only seen 10-11 seasons of), and oof. Dean hustling Sam out of the flames, its later parallel with Cas. The bridge. The Absence of John on screen. Hunting evil, hunting your father, hunting god.

S1E2

This show really starts out with two brothers looking for their father and ends up with them dethroning God, huh? Struck by how much they were paralleling Sam with John - like a not a new realization, but it's such a Choice to set up the younger brother that way. But then, Sam had to leave in order to experience the death of his brief foray into normalcy. Also baby Dean understanding what's happening on an intuitive level because he already watched it happen to John and he's always trying so hard to be like him and can't because the only higher priority is to take care of his little brother and the two, as he is able to conceive of them, are fundamentally incompatible.

Help me. I will never be free of this show.
