choice feminism/femininity rant
it’s very irritating when any critique towards the concept of femininity is labeled as “femmephobic” or “internal misogyny.” internalized misogyny is hating femaleness, not femininity. critical analysis does not inherently equal dislike. the reason so many young women are critical of femininity nowadays is not because of internalized misogyny. it’s because we are starting to realize femininity is an oppressive concept imposed by the patriarchy to subordinate women. examples:
being prohibited from playing outside so we don’t get our dresses dirty.
being taught how to do hair, makeup, and overall emphasize on ‘prettiness’ while your male counterparts are being encouraged to take control of their life and be empowered.
being taught to be polite, sweet, kind, warm, & compliant while your male cousins and brothers are encouraged to be assertive and dominant.
being forced to eat portioned food because “girls don’t eat as much” and you have to be small & petite.
being taught to sit “lady-like” & “dainty” and not sit comfortably.
being told your number one priority is marriage and/or motherhood.
being asked “when are you having kids/getting married?” while your brother is asked, “how’s work going?”
as young girls, we are socialized into these gender roles without having a thought about WHY we adhere to these stereotypes. but now that we are older and able to think critically of the actions we ritually conformed to for years, we are labeled as ‘femmephobic" and “anti-woman.” how dare you. how dare you accuse us of perpetuating the very oppression we are trying to escape from. this avoidance of critical analysis is the barrier to women liberation. “but it’s your choice!” choice does not exist inside a vacuum. no one is saying you can’t choose to do these things, but be aware of WHY. “but i like makeup!” are you uncomfortable with seeing your bare face in the morning? how often do you wear it? how much do you wear? why do you feel the need to change your looks in the first place? are you doing it because it’s expected of you or believe you will be perceived differently without it? *that* is critical analysis. i have no idea why people are so obsessed with choice-feminism. like, you’re literally telling young girls and women it’s ‘empowering’ to commodify your own body and rent it out to men? indoctrinating women into thinking it’s fine to permanently alter your body to conform to beauty standards? telling minors it’s “sex-positive” to enjoy being physically abused & degraded during sex? the obsession with “choice” is actually so toxic. no matter how harmful it is, you guys glamorize it as ‘empowering.’ it achieves nothing but binds women closer to the oppression you claim you’re combating.
