How each type look during an argument
This is GOLD
Here's my version. Im right
I don't entirely buy this, but it amused me. ;)
One way to type those around you is to examine their Enneagram talk style. Each type has a unique approach to speaking and writing, which can be picked up on in a matter of minutes. The following is a list of each type and their general mode of communication: TYPE 1: SERMONS/PREACH & TEACH Teaching, preaching, finding fault, admonishing, correcting, reminding of obligations Self-talk: ‘That’s not right’ TYPE 2: SYMPATHIES/HELP & ADVICE/PRAISE & COMPLIMENTS Befriending, supporting, comforting, offering friendly advice, pitching in, meeting needs, getting personal Self-talk: ‘You need me’ TYPE 3: SALES PITCHES/PROPAGANDA/SELF-PROMOTION Promoting, advertising, performing, exclaiming, motivational speeches, success stories Self-talk: ‘Watch me shine’ TYPE 4: LAMENTS/SAD STORIES Longing, lamenting, extolling, yearning, regretful sighs, poetic turns of phrase, self-expression Self-talk: ‘I’m feeling …’ TYPE 5: LECTURES/THESES/TREATISES Detailed explanations, informative displays of knowledge, definitions, facts, precise instructions, logical, rational arguments Self-talk: ‘I’m thinking …’ TYPE 6: CAUTIONS/CAVEATS/SETTING LIMITS Questions, warnings, second-guessing, trouble-shooting, worst-case scenarios, defending / testing Self-talk: ‘But what if …’ TYPE 7: ANECDOTES/BRAINSTORMING/STORYTELLING Joking, laughing, story-telling, entertaining, shifting gears, changing venues, sampling, imagining, checking out, moving on Self-talk: ‘On a lighter note’ TYPE 8: COMMANDS/DIATRIBES/LAYING TRIPS Arguing, debating, opposing, taking aim, scoring points, parting shots, military metaphors Self-talk: ‘Do this my way’ TYPE 9: CHRONICLES/SAGAS/EPICS Recounting sagas, epics, generalizing, day-dreaming aloud, voicing vague notions, wondering, meandering Self-talk: ‘Nice ’n easy’

Reactivity Patterns or: What to watch for in order to avoid flying off the handle
Generally speaking, the reactive triad will have an immediate response to the original imput, the positive triad has a ‘layered’ response where they first try to resolve things agreeably but might respond more obviously if that fails, & with the competency triad the response modulated & situation dependent
Type 1
What sets them off:
unreliable ppl
bad manners
when things aren’t up to standards
immorality
being criticised
How they respond:
death glare / obvious non-verbal disapprovement
lecturing or criticising you
outright getting pissed off, if the offense is bad enough
conversely, if they inwardly judge themselves/ feel they shouldn’t be angry you, you might get a paradoxical reaction formation response where they get more polite & nice to compensate
or a lowkey irritability if its more of a 'disapproving but not worth getting angry over it’ situation
Type 2
What sets them off:
getting their feelings hurt
feeling unwelcome or unappreciated
anything remotely resembling rejection
How they respond:
The Silent Treatment*. Depending on the severity of the offence this can mean cutting the person off, going away for a bit or just not acting quite as friendly & energetic as normal/ not helping as much/ acting more subdued & less nice.
if the situation makes them feel insecure they might try even harder to please the person, of course suppressing anger in this manner can lead to a buildup of resentment, leading to an eventual outright angry outburst, which can be passionate cause it’s usually been a long time coming
guilt trips
“ok then I won’t help you with X anymore”
Type 3
What sets them off:
when others make them look bad or screw up their reputation or projects
one-sided criticism
when others create an obstacle to their goals
feeling like they failed at something
When they hoped to get praise & recognition & then didn’t get it
How they respond:
might inwardly feel impatient or anxious
usually don’t show irritation right away because their first response is to make up for it by working more so this can also build up over time
if confrontation occurs they’ll brag/ puff up their ehgo to make themselves feel better, deflect blame or justify their actions
if they get rly sad they might hit the line to 9 & lose motivation for a bit, though this isn’t something ppl typically get to see. They might just spend a weekend playing video games & then move on
Type 4
What sets them off:
not being listened to
not feeling heard
when others assume to totally get their situation
insensitivity or lack of passion in other people
being limited in their expression/ ability to put their own stamp on things
deadening routine
being judged
feeling abandoned
How they respond:
usually there is some sort of emotional display
though it might not always be super overt, they might just go to their room & sulk / retreat into the imagination
if they have the energy for it that day though they might cry and complain or lash out in harsh condemnation/ disgust
Type 5
What sets them off:
disappointment - usually when the other person didn’t conform to some unsaid expectation
real or perceived demands and/ or pushiness
others getting really in their face, maybe by venting & talking about their lives or trying to involve them
sometimes just being unexpectedly talked at
How they respond:
going quiet/ just not answering**
tamping down their responses - general level of animation goes down, word choice gets more formal
continuing the conversation over text or otherwise less direct means
checking out of the conversation & just maybe listening to a few bits here & there to still give a coherent answer if needed
avoiding you or making themselves tactically unavailable by looking busy/distracted. Plopping on headphones when a disliked person shows up etc.
if properly displeased they can actually keep grudges or nurse hurts a long time cause most other ppl would discharge it right away & thus get it out of their system
Here it was fascinating that in one of the sources the two panelists disagreed on how obvious the response is. One thought it’s actually pretty transparent since they don’t really filter themselves much or consider the presence of others, whereas the other lady thought it was pretty unobvious since it is more like a lack of response in her view, though she’s come to piece together than when her 5 friend gives no response to her talking about something she did this means they probably disapprove or didn’t like it
Type 6
What sets them off:
lack of transparency - when ppl are insincere or not telling them the full story
when their worries aren’t taken seriously / ppl don’t show appropiate concern***
when a scenario that they feared comes true
How they respond:
get nervous & ask questions
rebellion/ anger
fawn/placating response
the critical/rigid response - formal policing, critizising or threatening to call the authorities
disbelief ~ 'no point in explaining to these idiots’
snapping into action mode - paradoxically getting more calm & taking control
throwing multiple of these at the wall to see what sticks
Type 7
What sets them off:
negativity
restriction
taking their options away
boring routines
pain
How they respond:
speech & thinking speeds up, in extreme cases can be frantic
but usually the first line is a mental/rational response, being resourceful, looking for a solution or way out
first approach will be charme and negotiation or trying to see the positive, find the humor
humor can also be used aggressively, as irreverent mockery, rebellion
but if that fails they can just get angry. (& often get over it quickly, but others might not.)
Type 8
What sets them off:
when something seems unfair or wrong to them
anything under the umbrella of bullshit, like indirectness, intransparency
inaction
seeing someone look weak or not acting like the person themselves would
when something hurts their feelings (the individual might not consciously realize this is happening)
How they respond:
usually directly jump into action to resolve the issue - say or do something right away, take care of it themselves etc.
if they see themselves opposed, they will respond with at least as much intensity as the perceived or real opponent
might take control of the situation & push / strongarm others into going along with their solution
Type 9
What sets them off:
imposition, being bossed around
conflict or the anticipation thereof
being overlooked or unvalued
rudeness, ppl uneccesarily confrontational
How they respond:
appealing to manners & proper tone
stubbornness
passive-aggression
making some comment that’s like a subtle diss
listen to you complain but then just don’t do what you say
just zones out & nods noncommittally
forgetfulness & being scattered (not always as deliberate passive agression but just because they’re expending energy to not get mad)
* This might be behind the common scenario where a 2 may notice that some friend or relative is being quieter or more subdued than usual & they assume or worry that the person is mad at them, because for them that would be pissed off behavior. For a lot of introverts, acting a little more subdued might just mean they’re tired.
** UGH I do this all the time when I just decide not to say anything if the convo turns to something I don’t like or if I disagree. I didn’t realize this was a type-specific thing. It’s not always like silently judging the person but rather thinkin 'ok I disagree but this is not worth arguing about/ not important rn/ saying something would be unproductive’.
The one panelist who was a 2 IIRC, was like “Oh, what helpful info~” but honestly it horrified me a bit that ppl would pick up on that and conclude I must be miffed, it would defeat the point of deciding that it doesn’t make sense to get angry here. If I did decided that it was worth getting mad over you’d absolutely hear about it (though this might be different depending on a person’s gut fix. )
I sort of noticed the 'formal language’ thing recently as well when I was writing an email to someone, my first email was jokey & excited, & then the response wasn’t what I thought it would be and my next reply was all formal and understated.
*** My mom is a 7 so she would sometimes inadvertently hit this exact button with one of my sisters (6) by trying to give her pep talks, and then the sister would feel her problem isn’t taken seriously & do one of the response patterns - usually rigidity/criticism, rebellion, or just getting yet more panicky. That was sometimes a bit of a mismatch/ clash zone between the two
(So now I will hopefull stop researching human behavior & just go finish my darn novel or at least do the laundry…)

Enneatype 1 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: anger. E1s are constantly searching for faults in everything, they stay angry and resentful to those flaws, and so themselves or other people. Fixation: resentment. They pay so much attention to finding flaws in everything, leading to nothing ever seeming like enough. Trap: perfection. They aggressively demand themselves, people and objects to perfection. They’re often highly critical of their surroundings and accomplishments. Defence mechanism: reaction formation. Reaction formation means to feel one way, but act according to the opposite. To keep their self image of being right, e1s deny these emotions to keep this up. Virtue: serenity. Serenity overcomes their anger once they realise that their essence is perfect, and more important than external perfection they seek. Key traits: Inner critic, over control, virtuousness, perfectionism and criticality.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp1 is characterised as being worried a lot. They most likely grew up in a chaotic environment and try to compensate for it to make themselves as organised and perfect as they can. Out of each subtype they use the defence mechanism the most, due to their perfection being largely self focused. Sexual [sx]: The sx1 tries to put themselves up more as a model of the perfect person other people should admire and strive to be like. They’re often stereotyped as the more angry subtype, often being invasive especially in things and people that aren't to their standard. Social [so]: The so1 can be described as a stereotypical school teacher. They feel as though they must teach others perfection. Similar to the sx1, but so1s are more helping type people than model people. They actively go out of their way to help those who don't conform to their standard, but can get impatient when things don't go their way
Contradictions- INTP, ISTP, ISFP, INFP, ENTP, ENFP, ESFP, ESTP Due to the usage of the introverted judgement, these types are incompatible with e1. Being highly critical and aware of their thoughts, suppressing them to fit what is perfect in their eyes is what causes this. Ji dominance is highly subjective and focused on the inward information, while e1 wants concrete and objective perfection and achievement. Their anger, objectivity and need for control can make them look very similar to e8. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e3, e4, e5, e6 and e8.

Enneatype 9 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: sloth. E9s are extremely lazy when it comes to figuring themselves out, in fact, they’re more active when it comes to avoiding this. Fixation: indolence. They're also rather lethargic when it comes to their feelings and needs, and so, not allowing themselves to do what they’d most desire. Trap: seeker. They seek outside of themselves to what can help them from their problems, running from themselves. Defence mechanism: narcotization. To avoid being uncomfortable and keep their self image of being harmonious, they narcotize themselves to stop any negative, intense or painful emotion. Virtue: action. To overcome this laziness, the e9 has to learn to take action in what they love and who they are. They must learn to experience their essence. Key traits: Over-adjustment and merging, resignation, easygoing nature/affability, indecision.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp9 merges with things like routine and physical comfort. These routines can be anything, as long as they feel their painful thoughts and feelings are being suppressed by them. They can hold more grudges to others and obligations when they don’t fit their routines, ‘you asked me so now i don’t feel like doing it anymore.’ Sexual [sx]: Sx9s have the tendency to merge too much with someone else, often to the point they lose their entire sense of self. This makes it hard for them to notice what they don’t and do want and need, when they do they’re often scared to express these needs and so continue to suppress. Social [so]: So9s are extremely active compared to the other subtypes. They merge with groups and think that they need to work hard to obtain and keep this status in their social circle. They can even look similar to e3s at times, the difference is that they truly strive for acceptance of the group and a sense of belonging instead of material success.
Contradictions- INFP, INFJ, INTJ, INTP, ENFP, ENTP, ENTJ, ENFJ, ISFP, ESTJ The most important misconception in these contradictions are intuitive types. This is due to psychological interia (concretism, lack of openness, etc), robot habit-boundness (bound to custom, regularity and tradition), distractibility (oversimplification of inner and outer world and laziness). All this directly contradicts intuition's main focus on abstraction, creation and overcomplication. E9 is also widely regarded as incompatible with Fi dominance, this is particularly prevalent in narcotization, being the deadening of feelings, while Fi values their emotion most. E9s also tend to lack communication about themselves, which is strange considering Fi being occupied with their self identity and expression. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e2, e4, e5, e6 and e7.

Enneatype 8 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: lust. E8s think that anything worth doing , should be done all the time, similar to e7s gluttony. However lust is more focused on physicality, this is usually stereotyped as aggression. Fixation: vengeance. They feel as though their wrongs can be forgiven by being angry at- and blaming external factors. Trap: justice. They have a good grasp on how unfair our world is, they’re very sensitive to actions they deem unfair towards themselves. Their response to this is revenge, as it would balance the two wrongs. Defence mechanism: denial. E8s avoid being seen as weak, and feeling vulnerable at all times. Through denial they block out any thought, feeling and need they see as vulnerable or weak, and refuse to accept situations in which they are these things. Virtue: innocence. In order to admit to themselves, they need to learn that vulnerability is okay, and immediate reactions to external, often unnecessary, judgement, whether made by themselves or others, aren’t needed. Key traits: Anger and the willingness to confront, rebelliousness, punitiveness/revenge, dominance, insensitivity, autonomy, sensory-motor dominance.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: Sp8s are usually more introverted and don’t care as much about expressing their desires. They want to get what they need without communicating it, this can make them seem overly impatient with others. They’re very independent and know how to get what they want really well. All this can make them look overly egocentric and selfish. Sexual [sx]: The sx8 is more of a leader type. They want people to look at them and be the centre of attention, usually they strive to achieve this through rebellion and being good at expressing what they want and how they want it. Though they want to lead, bigger groups aren't their thing, they often feel like they might lose control over the people they’re supposed to have all the attention of. Social [so]: The so8 is more friendly and caring than the other subtypes. They want to rebel against social norms and help people out who they think of as weaker than them. They want to be able to protect those who struggle in environments they understand, due to this they want to gain knowledge over these environments.
Contradictions- INTJ, INFJ, ISTJ, ISFJ, INTP, ISTP, INFP, ISFP, ENTJ, ESTJ, ENFJ, ESFJ, ENTP, ENFP Most importantly, e8 is exclusive to se dominance. While this seems like an excessive limitation, it becomes obvious by their value for tangible reality, sensory motor and lust. One thing people tend to get wrong about e8 is assuming it could be compatible with judging functions, especially Te. While Te and Se can sometimes appear similar, the deciding factor here is the fact that Te still prefers thinking over doing, while e8 wants the opposite. A similar case can be made for intuition, however this would be more focused on intuitions abstraction and e8s realism. Some people have considered sp8 to be on the debatable side of things when it comes to ISTP and ISFP, however I personally disagree and find the introverted and judging dichotomies to be contradictory for the reasons I named previously. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e2, e3, e4, e6, e7 and e9.
Compatible types- Self preservation: ESFP, ESTP Sexual: ESFP, ESTP Social: ESFP, ESTP
Enneatype 7 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: gluttony. E7s think that when something brings them pleasure, they should need an unlimited amount of said things to keep themselves happy. They continue this routine until they reach a state of uncomfort and so the cycle goes. Fixation: planning. While this isn’t the typical idea people have by the word planning, it's still very future focused. The mind constantly goes from one thing to another, considering many projects to take on at once. Trap: idealism. The e7 wants to form the present in a way that makes the future seem ideal. Later being disappointed by it and starting over once again. Defence mechanism: rationalisation. To avoid unhappiness they logicalize, rationalise, their negative emotions to lessen their effects and so stay focused on whatever it is they’ve dumped themselves on. Virtue: sobriety. Instead of starting and dropping project after project, they need to find a way to focus on patience and learn that external pleasure won’t get them the perfect future they desire. Key traits: Self-referencing, positive reframing/optimism, hedonism, rebelliousness, lack of focus/discipline.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp7 is focused the most on the actual reality they’re in. Instead of merely thinking about what they want they focus on actually getting there. Because of this they can often be seen as more self-centred. On occasion they might even use other people to materialise this future they strive for. Sexual [sx]: Opposite to the materialisation of the sp7, sx7s do mostly dream. True reality is too boring to them, so instead they focus on made up opportunities to escape this. They can often be very gullible into believing the best case scenarios, constantly searching for these to escape the pain that is ordinaryness. Social [so]: So7s strive to create reality perfect for everyone. Their gluttony is more focused on the group than themselves, they would gladly give something away if someone else needed it more. They can look similar to e2s, the main difference is that so7s don’t necessarily need the love and attention e2s want.
Contradictions- INTP, ISTP, INTJ, ISTJ, INFJ, ISFJ, INFJ, ISFP, ESFP, ESFJ, ESTJ While Naranjo compares e7 and INTJ at some point in character and neurosis, this comparison doesn’t make much sense to me. He describes far too many cognitively extroverted traits for the type to even be a bit compatible, so I'm very sceptical of this. On top of introversion, another (partial) incompatible dichotomy is sensing, this is mostly due to their fixation and trap. However, the passion gluttony makes sp7 debatable for ESTP. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e2, e3, e4, e5, e8 and e9.
Compatible types- Self preservation: ENTP, ESTP, ENTJ Sexual: ENTP, ENFP, ENFJ Social: ENTP, ENFP, ENFJ
Enneatype 6 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: fear. For e6s life is like a huge threat. They are convinced everyone is against them. They even see their own fear as a safe space, something that can guarantee physical safety. Fixation: cowardice. Due to the constant doubt, they lead to create an infinite amount of unrealistic worst case scenarios to prepare themselves for anything. Trap: security. To protect themselves, they often look for someone stronger than them. They expect this person to keep them safe from impending disaster, and devote themselves to this person completely. Defence mechanism: projection. To avoid rejection and keep their self image of being loyal, they attribute feelings, thoughts and most importantly fears, onto an external source. This is called projection. Virtue: courage. Once e6s realise nothing can harm their essence, they can allow courage to replace fear. Key traits: Hypervigilance, theoretical orientation, orientation to authority, doubt and ambivalence, contrarian thinking, self-fulfilling prophecy,
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp6 is often called the most fearful subtype, they’re the most in touch with their fear. They close their true self off and create an image of friendliness to avoid arguments and such. They can drop this act once people get closer to them and they start feeling uncomfortable by this intimacy. When this happens they often start to either close themselves off from this person completely or lash out. Sexual [sx]: Sx6s are pretty much the opposite, they think that once people think their kind, they're seen as weak. To avoid this they create fake courage and strength. They often want to be seen as a leader, because when they’re the ones with power they need not worry about those who may have more. Social [so]: So6s often hide behind people with more strength and courage than them. They’re extremely loyal, the downside of this is that they put full trust in these people. What this person of power says is always true in their eyes, the other way around, they blame mistakes they’ve made on this person as well, giving them full responsibility over the so6.
Contradictions- ENTP, ENFP, ESTP, ESFP, ESFJ, ENFJ E6 is mostly an introverted type, this is mostly due to cowardice, security and projection. Their extroverted cognition and lack of cognitive and logical structure leads these types to be incompatible with e6. However, Te is widely considered to be compatible with the subtypes sx and so. Naranjo also compares sx6 and ENTJ specifically. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e1, e2, e3, e4, and e8.
Compatible types- Self preservation: ISFP, INFP, ISTP, INTP, ISTJ, INTJ, ISFJ, INFJ Sexual: ISFP, INFP, ISTP, INTP, ISTJ, INTJ, ISFJ, INFJ, ESTJ, ENTJ Social: ISTJ, INTJ, ISFJ, INFJ, ESTJ, ENTJ
Enneatype 5 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: avarice. E5s are cautious and value anonymity with what they share in order to maintain the peace and calmness they worked hard to achieve. They need this space to consume information about the world without having to participate in it. Fixation: stinginess. They have a huge thirst for knowledge, usually this will accompany knowledge on how to strategically control their environment. Trap: observer. The e5s fascination with the world comes from a place of anxiety. They want to know everything about life while refusing to really live it. Defence mechanism: isolation. To avoid emptiness and keep their self image of being knowledgeable, they isolate themselves from any painful or intense emotions. Instead they want to focus on their knowledge in hope to completely remove these thoughts. Virtue: detachment. To relieve themselves from their isolation, they will need to detach from their hiding place, experience the world and let go of the anonymity they so crave. Key traits: The centrality of thinking, emotional detachment and feelinglessness, fear of engulfment, autonomy and self-sufficiency, hypersensitivity.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: Sp5s build clear walls around themselves to protect their safe space. They have a strong need for things like boundaries and dislike surprises and intrusions. Once they feel as though these boundaries are crossed, they rely on their safe space to retreat to. They generally strongly value control. Sexual [sx]: Sx5s are often more artistic than the other subtypes. They want to find the perfect partner they can share every part of themselves with. Even the parts they’ve suppressed for a long time. Because of this, they are often disappointed in the people they trusted in to be like this perfect person for them. Social [so]: So5s have this same desire to be able to share their ideas and thoughts with others, but this is much more group focused for them. They want to find people who they share interests with and bring them together. They are more obvious in their search for knowledge, but focus less on truly shutting themselves off.
Contradictions- ESFJ, ENFJ, ESFP, ENFP, ENTP, ESTP, ESTJ, ENTJ, ISFP, INFP, ISFJ The main contradiction in e5 is extroversion. E5 is a very reclusive type, they tend to observe instead of participate and try. This contradicts with the inherent external involvement of any cognitively extroverted type. The second is partially the feeling dichotomy, this is due to their emotional isolation. The sensation dichotomy is also considered to be debatable due to e5s abstract thought process. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e3, e4, e6, e7 and e9.

Enneatype 4 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: envy. E4s feel as though something is missing in their life. Whether this is a person, thing or feeling, they feel like others have achieved this while they stayed behind. Fixation: melancholy. Due to this loss, they feel like they don't belong amongst the people they assume have achieved this thing they want. They feel disconnected and unrelated to those. Trap: authenticity. E4s believe that that what is missing can come anytime. When it does come, they can finally feel fulfilled and authentic. Defence mechanism: introjection. To avoid ordinariness and keep their self image of being authentic, they take external negativity directed towards them and internalise them in a way that helps them feel in control of these critiques. Virtue: equanimity. They need to allow themselves to be happy in the present and with what they have, this is called equanimity. And so, they overcome their envy. Key traits: Inferior self-image, focus on suffering, emotional sensitivity and empathic ability, aesthetic sensibility, push-pull pattern in relationships.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: Sp4s are stoic and learned to stay strong during painful situations. Sp4s are extremely demanding of themselves, they work hard to achieve what they’re missing. When this ends up stressing them out, they won't show or tell anyone. Their suffering is constantly suppressed, they hope to find validation and love because of how strong and enduring they are. Sexual [sx]: Envy is very present in the sx4. They feel as though they’re constantly made to compete with others they should be better than. Despite suffering from the inferiority all e4s deal with, this is much more socially suppressed in sx4s. They feel as though they must be superior or their efforts aren't worth anything. Social [so]: So4s are kind of the stereotypical e4s. They feel as though their suffering and pain is a part of them, while they do tend to talk about it a lot, this is often seen as their only trait which is not true. They are convinced something is fundamentally wrong with them and due to this constantly compare themselves to others in hopes to figure out what this is.
Contradictions- INTP, ISTP, ENTP, ESTP, INTJ, ISTJ, ESTJ, ENTJ, ESFJ, ENFJ The main contradiction in e4 is the thinking dichotomy. Similar to e2, e4s highly value emotions and feelings. This doesn’t mean they don't value logic nor that thinking types don't value emotion, it just means they prefer one over the other. Another contradiction is Fe dominance. This is due to external emotion and a desire to please the group. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e2, e3, e5, e6, e7 and e9.

Enneatype 3 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: deceit. E3s want to be known for their status and accomplishments. In order to keep this up, they won't admit to anything that might harm this image, thus using deceit. Fixation: vanity. They create strategies on how to make this image and appearance they care so much about as impressionable and useful as possible. Trap: efficiency. They always search for ways to reach their goals, and so improve their status, faster. Having little patience for others and even themselves. Defence mechanism: identification. To keep up this status, e3s take on parts of another person that make them seem impressive and so build up their status and fit in with the people they feel like they would as themselves. Virtue: truthfulness. They need to realise their essence can't change and they don't need to use their deception in order to keep their external image and status. Key traits: Other-directedness, achievement orientation, focus on success, competitiveness and the drive to win, image manipulation and self-deception,
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp3 is less concerned with overall image and more so with their security in success. They want to achieve for what it gets them, like money. They can appear similarly to e1s sometimes, as they care about doing things the correct way. Once something isn’t correct, it could take away from the security they constantly work on to achieve. Sexual [sx]: Sx3s are more concerned with having an attractive image than things like money and security. While they can be very hard working, this is always to support someone and help them achieve success or security. They fear letting people down in these ways, they work to avoid being seen as a disappointment to those around them. Social [so]: Deceit is probably the most active in the so3. Their image is their all, they see life as a stage where they must appear perfect and successful. They need to show off importance in money with external things everyone can see, like clothing or accessories. Success for them is purely based on social validation and hierarchy.
Contradictions- INTP, ISTP, INTJ, ISTJ, INFP, ISFP, INFJ, ISFJ Any cognitively introverted type is incompatible with e3. This is due to its inherent dependence on social and materialistic value and success. Even a subtype like sp3 wouldn't be compatible because it's still reliant on materialistic value and security. Types you might want to look into if you are on this list are e1, e4, e5, e6 and e7.

Enneatype 2 summarized!!
Core type- Passion: pride. E2s are dependent on the approval of the people around them, they need others to like them. Once they do, they gain more and more pride. Fixation: flattery. They gain acceptance and approval by giving the same attention they want, to the people around them. Trap: freedom. While they want to be free of this need of approval, or may even act like they are. They aren’t and it feels like it’s impossible to not care about this acceptance. Defence mechanism: repression. In order to avoid seeming needy and keeping their self image of being helpful and caring, e2s will use repression. This repression means hiding the feelings and needs that would be deemed unacceptable by others. Virtue: humility. E2s need the humility of realising their essence isn’t special, as humility overcomes their pride in external acceptance and approval. Key traits: Strategic helpfulness to create indispensability, seductiveness, emotionality and emotional sensitivity, romanticism, hedonism and compensatory overindulgence.
Subtypes- Self preservation [sp]: The sp2 tries to gain attention by being cute and youthful. Sp2s are very dependent on others, they don’t want to take responsibility for themselves, which goes along with their childlike behaviour. To avoid independency and growing up they indulge in things like parties, shopping and drinking as long as it distracts them from responsibility. Sexual [sx]: Sx2s want attention from one special person. They need love, and once this is achieved they can fuel their pride. Their ‘helping’ is often more focused towards emotional support, promising and giving. Through this they strive to be truly special to this person, who would then do anything for them, or so they believe. Social [so]: So2s are more leader type people. They strive to gain attention by being powerful, special, knowledgeable and then gain trust and influence over groups and people. Being good performers, it's easy for them to be nice for the sake of having people owe them and be able to freely ask for favours and such.
Contradictions- ISTP, INTP, ESTP, ENTP, INTJ, ISTJ, ENTJ, ESTJ, INFP, ISFP, INFJ, ISFJ The primary contradiction here lies in the fact that e2s value emotions most of all, both those of others and their own. This obviously doesn’t mean thinking types don't value emotion, but their logic overshadows it, this works the opposite in the case of e2. The type is also a cognitively extraverted type, this means that even Fe aux INFJ and ISFJ can't be e2s. Types you might want to look into in if you are on this list are e3, e4, e7 and e9
