How to Spot a Fake Service Dog Team
Based on some of the messages in my inbox which I won’t repost, and some sentiments on my video on this subject, I feel this warrants its own post.
Do not be a gate keeper. If the dog is well-behaved then it is 100% irrelevant whether you “think” the handler is really disabled or not. You can’t smell sickness. You can’t “sense” a faker. It doesn’t matter how big or small that dog is or how happy and healthy their handler looks. You mind your own business and move along.
Okay so now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s say the dog isn’t in a proper down-stay and moving around. Here are some things the dog might be doing that may SEEM disruptive, but are actually tasks.
1) The dog is being vocal.
The dog could be vocalizing in an attempt to interrupt the handler’s dissociative episode. The handler could have trained the dog in any number of oral responses to various triggers in order to get their attention.
2) The dog is jumping on the handler.
The dog could, again, be disrupting an episode and attempting to prevent the handler from doing something potentially harmful. The dog may be alerting to a seizure and trying desperately to get their handler’s attention after the initial alert was ignored.
“Okay, Lexie, but what if…”
If you really want to be that person and be on the lookout for fakers, here’s the only times you should raise an eyebrow.
1) The dog is willfully and actively being destructive and disruptive. He’s gnawing on tables, trying to steal peoples’ food, barking at every person who walks by their seat, peeing on the floor, etc-
2) The dog is aggressive and is snarling and snapping at people and in general behaving menacingly.
That’s it. Outside of that, you need to ignore it and move along.
Also, something very very important to keep in mind. The person may be faking their service dog, but you have no idea whether or not they are faking their illness.
Maybe their dog is still in training and they brought him out too soon. Maybe they can’t afford a trainer and are desperate and ended up making a bad decision. Maybe their dog is usually fine but for some reason is acting up because he’s sick or washing out from the stress.
There are a myriad of reasons why someone with a legitimate disability might have a “fake service dog” and if you DO find yourself in a position where you need to approach them, (which should not happen unless you are working at the place of business where this team is at) you should approach them with kindness and understanding, and say something like,
“excuse me. I understand this dog is your service animal, but unfortunately it seems he’s having an off day at work. He’s disrupting the other patrons at this store and as such, we have to ask you to remove him from the premise for the time being. If there’s anything we can do to assist you in the meantime, please let us know and we would be more than happy to help.”
