fantasy really did cook with dragons as an allegory for weapons of mass destruction, more specifically as a symbolic manifestation of the insatiable greed that drives men to seek to claim ownership and control over such weapons
like oh man i sure hope your dismissal and objectification of highly independent and intelligent beings as "savage beasts" and the fiercely possessive pride you take in their subjugation doesn't reflect your broader ideological values haha. can you even imagine.
I think I went a little insane while drawing this I hope you can't tell how much hands stress me out lmao
I've loved Sam's design for the longest time, so I've been wanting to draw her more often. I've been feeling a bit down lately and procrastinating on my projects *cough Danny & Sam animatic I still haven't finished cough.*
I swear, this time, I'll actually be more active and finish everything I've been procrastinating on. Pray for me.🕊🕊
very stupid hc: obviously, wolf witchers don't howl at the moon. they just holler and yell at it. lil bleater joins in.
Jaskier is roused from pleasant dreams by a yell. He winces and rolls over beneath the heap of furs, and realises with a little jolt that the bed beside him is bare. He sits up, rubbing his eyes, and peers around his room.
It’s empty.
Ah. Well, perhaps that was to be anticipated. He couldn’t have expected Geralt to stay with him all night, after all. Not when he had his own, larger chambers and blissfully unoccupied bed elsewhere.
The noise, he supposes, was just a dream. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s dreamt of being shouted at, and nor will it be the last. He pulls the furs up to his chin and settles back against the pillow.
His eyes are drooping shut when he nears another shout - this one clear as anything.
“Fuck off you spooky fuck!”
Jaskier sits up, the furs dropping away. He waits.
“Fuck!”
With a sigh, he swings himself from the warmth of the bed, pulls on his clothes and boots, wraps one of the larger furs around his shoulders and strides from the room. He follows the sound of yelling through the keep and towards the balcony overlooking the training yard. He spots Vesemir standing there, silhouetted by the light of the moon.
As he approaches, he hears another yell - and that voice, he knows, belongs to Geralt.
“What’s going on?” He mutters, tugging the fur closer as the cold night air bites at his skin.
Vesemir shakes his head. “Young pups,” he says, as if that explains anything at all.
Jaskier steps onto the balcony, where snow is now falling, and looks down into the yard. Geralt and his brothers are down there, pacing back and forth. Every so often one of them pauses to shout again. Jaskier frowns, wondering what kind of weird witcher madness he’s stumbled across now, when Lambert cups his hands around his mouth and hollers - “You alabaster fuck!”
“Are they… shouting at the moon?” Jaskier asks, turning back to Vesemir.
Vesemir nods. “They’ll tire themselves eventually,” he says. “You should return to bed, bard. They might be here a while.”
With that, he walks away, leaving Jaskier standing on the balcony watching the chaos below. Even Lil’ Bleater is down there, he notes with amusement, jumping over fallen walls and joining in with the yelling. He’s observing quietly when he’s suddenly spotted.
Geralt catches his gaze - does a double take - and falls silent. Jaskier extracts a hand from beneath the fur and gives him a little wave, eyebrows raised. Geralt looks embarrassed, which is delightful.
It doesn’t look like the other witchers have noticed him, so Jaskier tucks his chilly hand back beneath the furs and winks.
Geralt scowls. Jaskier silently mouths - see you later - his breath fogging in front of him, then turns away, keen to return to the comfort of his warm bed. In the morning, he’s going to have a lot of questions for his wolf.
i started reading You Wouldn’t Like Me Alive by @ectoplasmranch it’s so good i can’t overstate how awesome the descriptions and dialogue is it really puts a picture in my head if that makes sense anyways here’s my interpretation of what danny looks like
Sometimes I complain about writing but at least I don't have to know anything about colour theory. God truly gives his hardest battles (figuring out shading and anatomy) to his strongest warriors (artists)
sometimes i complain about art but at least i don't have to know anything about good dialogue. god truly gives his hardest battles (figuring out plot threads and character development) to his strongest warriors (writers)
Love that the response to this post is either:
Writers and artists talking about how much they respect and admire each other
People who are both writers AND artists cying
"commenting is hard i never know what to say" this is an actual comment i left on a fic last night
you can literally write anything you want
this comment being from 2:35 am adds to the atmosphere i think

things english speakers know, but don’t know we know.
WOAH WHAT?
That is profound. I noticed this by accident when asked about adjectives by a Japanese student. She translated something from Japanese like “Brown big cat” and I corrected her. When she asked me why, I bluescreened.
What the fuck, English isn’t even my first language and yet I picked up on that. How the fuck. What the fuck.
Reasoning: It Just Sounds Right
Oooh, don’t like that. Nope, I do not even like that a little bit. That’s parting the veil and looking at some forbidden fucking knowledge there.
How did I even learn this language wtf
I had to read “brown big cat” like three times before my brain stopped interpreting it as “big brown cat”
I’m kinda reading “brown big cat” as “brown (big cat)”, that is, a “big cat” - like a tiger or lion or other felid of similar size - that happens to be brown. “Big brown cat”, on the other hand, sounds more like a brown cat that’s just a bit bigger than a regular housecat - like a bobcat or a maine coon cat or something like that.
yeah, a brown big cat is almost certainly a puma. a big brown cat is probably a maine coon.
yeah, if you put the adjectives out of order you wind up implying a compound noun, which is presumably why we have this rule; we stripped out so much inflection over the centuries word order now dictates a huge amount of our grammar
Just looked up why we do this and one of the first lines in this article is, “Adjectives are where the elves of language both cheat and illumine reality.” so I know it’s a good article.
Things this article has taught me:
This same order of adjectives more or less applies to languages around the world. “It’s possible that these elements of universal grammar clarify our thought in some way,” says Barbara Partee, a professor emeritus of linguistics and philosophy at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Yet when the human race tacitly decided that shape words go before color words go before origin words, it left no record of its rationale.
One theory is that the more specific term always falls closer to the noun. But that doesn’t explain everything in adjective order.
Another theory is that as you get closer to the noun, you encounter adjectives that denote more innate properties. In general, nouns pick out the type of thing we’re talking about, and adjectives describe it,” Partee told me. She observes that the modifiers most likely to sit right next to nouns are the ones most inclined to serve as nouns in different contexts: Rubber duck. Stone wall.
Rules are made to be broken. Switching up the order of adjectives allows you to redistribute emphasis. (If you wish to buy the black small purse, not the gray one, for instance, you can communicate your priorities by placing color before size). Scrambling the order of adjectives also helps authors achieve a sense of spontaneity, of improvising as they go. Wolfe discovers such a rhythm, a feeling-his-way quality, when he discusses his childhood recollection of “brown tired autumn earth” and a “flat moist plug of apple tobacco.”
Brain scans have discovered that your brain has to work harder to read adjectives in the “wrong” order.
TL;DR: No one knows why we do this adjective thing but it’s pretty hardwired in.
@deadcatwithaflamethrower Linguistics tidbit.
Since it’s never credited, this is from Mark Forsyth’s The Elements of Eloquence, and just one reason why I think it’s required reading for anyone interested in prosecraft. Every page is this useful.
ao3 announcing they're changing beta to omega for april fools day: funny
ao3 doing that as a precursor to announcing they're getting rid of the beta altogether: really funny
Once again recommending that writers, especially newer writers, start ‘rubber ducking’
When you’re stumped and you don’t know what’s not working for your writing, or you don’t know where to go next, take out a rubber duck (or any equivalent friend/inanimate object, I like to use my dogs) and start explaining every single detail as if the rubber duck knows nothing about writing or about your story. Explain out loud what’s going on, what part you’re up to, why you’re stumped, and what you know you need to get to when you figure out how to get there
Somewhere along the line of putting it into words and externalising the thought process, it’s likely something will slot into place

Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.
This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?
Hanahaki, but it's a child that feels neglected by their parents.
Hanahaki, but it's someone whose friends have started ghosting them.
Hanahaki, someone's wife is cheating on them.
Hanahaki, the disease that gives you three options: confront your feelings, destroy the love you hold for someone or perish choking on roses.
Meanwhile this was what various medical professionals in that reddit thread had to say about it.
They do not, in fact, love it.
The proof that chiropractic is an utterly failed medical profession is not that adjustments can cause harm, but that the profession has responded by ignoring and denying the harm, rather than studying it.
All medical treatments (other than complete placebos) have some risk of harm, but for real treatments given by real professionals, the harms are tracked, measured and warned about. If the harms are too severe, the treatment is no longer used.
One of my colleagues was a chiropractor. After a while he began to suspect that a lot of his patients actually just had muscle tears, not spinal issues. He bought an ultrasound machine, learned how to use it and how to read ultrasound, and found that to be the case. Between that and the constant pressure from management to get customers (because lbr, they're not patients, they're customers), he got sick and tired of it and bailed to become a sonographer full time.
And before people pipe up with "but my chiro is good, they have me do exercises and so on!" that's just regular ass physiotherapy. See a physiotherapist. A lot of people who sing the praises of chiros because they saved them from chronic pain would have gotten the same benefits from seeing an actual licensed physio, who can prescribe the same or even better exercises because they have an actual fucking education.
The amount of fucking charts I've seen where a patient went to a chiropractor and now needs a surgery is fucking insane. All I do is medical charts, day in and day out doing medical code. I've gone over hundreds of patients whole year of appointments. Unless the chiropractor is also a physical therapist, that patient is going to get worse and need surgery with very few exceptions. It doesn't matter when they mention seeing a chiropractor, by the end of the year they need surgery for issues that started after *shock and awe* a chiropractor appointment! I've seen patients needing multiple surgeries to be functional after chiropractors. I've seen patients lose their ability to walk because of chiropractors. And all the way up till they need surgery, through the issues piling up and needing more pain meds, the patients insist it's helping because the want so badly for it to be helping. I wish it did
some people will be like “I wonder why fanfic writers don’t share their works anymore😔” and then this is them when a writer is kind enough to share something they write — as a hobby, for their own enjoyment — with them for free.
some people really don’t realize how privileged they are that they get fanfics for free. imagine having access to something for free because someone is kind enough to share it with you… and then being rude, entitled and an ungrateful pos to that person who was kind enough to share their creation with you for free
“almost 1 year is a lil too much for me” fuck off. fanfic writers don’t owe you anything. one of my favorite fics was updated after 13 years, and what I did is that I thanked the author for choosing to continue the work, I didn’t act like a spoiled toddler by asking why they didn’t update sooner. and even if a writer chooses to abandon their fic permanently with no explanation, that is their choice, their hobby, their decision. they don’t owe your entitled ass anything.
you people let tiktok rot your brains to the point you see everything as content farm and engagement. not a piece of art created by the artist’s love and passion. it’s dystopian.
