"It doesn't help your credibility to exaggerate, most employers wouldn't literally work you to death" like, I used to work in distribution. If booking a truck driver for back to back shifts until they fall asleep at the wheel, crash, and die counts as being worked to death, I have personally met employers who've worked employees to death and gotten away with a slap on the wrist. It may not be universal, but it's a hell of a lot more common than a lot of us would prefer to think.
Death by spreadsheet is an acceptable degree of separation for most in middle management. They can sleep at night without guilt for what they've done, because the system charitably setup twelve degrees of separation between their choices and the real-world harm. But do not be fooled, their choices set that harm into motion. Without their reckless disregard for human life, the harm would not be done.
I used to work at a TV station in Ohio. On weekends, we only had an 11pm news broadcast. Not much happened on weekends, ya know? I worked Monday-Friday 9-5, but someone on the weekend shift quit, so I also had to come in at 9pm on Sat/Sun to work the 11pm news. It was brutal. I worked seven days a week, even if two of them were ~3hrs.
This was a particularly bad winter. One Saturday, we had a level 2 snow emergency: That means you should only travel if you absolutely must. Like, it's not uncommon for cops to pull you over in level 2 emergencies to ask where you're going and why. It is genuinely dangerous to drive in that much snow.
I told my boss as much, how I almost crashed on the way home at 12:30am after a news broadcast. I told him I would need to call off if there were a snow emergency again during a night snow.
He told me, point blank, "If you ever call me about the goddamn snow, I will take it as a call of resignation."
And that was that! The very next Saturday, snow fell again. It was a level 2, but would become level 3 by sunup. Level 3 means driving is literally illegal except for ambulances and snow plows. I stared out the window, watching the snow, and I had to make a choice.
"Will I die for this? Will I kill myself to keep this job?" I made $11/hr.
Yes, managers work you to death. That's their job.
Every single labor protection is written in the blood of those who were literally worked to death, and business owners and profiteers would claw those protections back with glee if they could. They will squeeze every red cent from your body if they are allowed, and write off your death for an insurance payout that they'll try to pocket for themselves while hiring your replacement for half the pay they gave to you.
my controversial opinion is I don’t think Zuko was confused by “my first girlfriend turned into the moon”
he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been ‘this day has already been so goddamn weird’
The only really new information was that that was Sokka’s girlfriend
Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say “yeah, I know.”
Sokka: “My girlfriend turned into the moon.”
Zuko: “I know.” “Yes.” “She sure did.” “Uh huh.” “Tell me something new.” “Are we still talking about that?” “That’s rough, buddy.”
[image: tags by samwisethebold: #it’s not that he doesn’t get what sokka means #it’s that how on earth do you respond to that]
When you put it like that, this is actually a legendary display of tact on Zuko’s part
Not that there's anything wrong with having something wrong with you
I feel like there’s literally no stronger swear word than when a girl in bonnet in a movie says something like, “But Lady Snapplecap says I cannot until I come of age!” and a dude wearing pants tucked into his boots and an open shirt replies, “DAMN Lady Snapplecap!” with the force of 435 F-bombs

EVERYOBODY GET DOWN HES TAKING A CREATIVE LIBERTY
the reason that wounds that break the skin hurt is because its always supposed to be dark inside your body and when your blood sees sunlight for the first time it gets scared. and that causes the pain. or maybe it doesnt

Concept for bloodymary enjoyers: maybe Grace & Rocky don't find Simon that early into the journey to Erid. Maybe they actually find him pretty late.
By this point Grace is already suffering bad from malnutrition. Maybe juust at the "can still walk and talk but I'm sleeping damn near all the time" stage. Simon's sub is just straight up floating in space not far from this weird ass moon that visibly has way more color and stuff going on than its planet. They get close enough that Rocky can, with focus, hear a heartbeat. They debate the matter immensely (they can't afford to stay or bring whatever it is on board, there's not enough resources; Grace wants to anyway) and settle on spending one painstaking week figuring out how to secure it to the ship.
Initially the idea is to get whatever creature in there out, but there's a couple problems with that, namely being a) they have no way of protecting it from the radiation of space, they don't have the capabilities of Rocky's ship to do that for them. b) it is after intense scrutiny and observation from a distance determined to be filled with some kind of liquid, according to Rocky c) the sub is, in Grace's words when he looks at it from the petrova scope, "visibly pulsing" and he really doesn't want to fuck with that. They spend very valuable time figuring out how to secure the sub to the ship, weaving enough xenonite to be able to do so. The last spacewalk Grace ever does is securing the straps they made around the sub back onto Mary. It sets back his health greatly.
The insanity that is landing on Erid. On one hand, they have this weak, dying malnourished human who they very urgently need to start synthesizing the right nutrients for because he could actually die any minute now. On the other hand, they have this horrifying fucking Situation of a sub where the liquid inside is just Full of the same blood the other creature has, and the pulsing is coming from this seemingly other human who has connected and fused to the sub with something like branches or vines. Getting Simon out of the sub is objectively easier. Treating his arm and wounds is an insanely hard task, but it is still easier than treating Grace. Simon yells and fights when he wakes up, but he's not as strong as them, well quarantined behind a barrier, and smart enough to figure out that they're trying to help him even if he can't understand what they're saying. Simon being brought to see Grace (but not touch or get close to, never, Rocky is insane with the need to protect Grace, especially since Simon has proven he can be violent and Grace is so so delicate right now) and realizes with slight horror that the desperate chirping is them asking him how they can help Grace. But Simon has no idea because he doesn't know this guy at all or what's wrong with him other than being hungry. How do you explain you can't just "give him food" you don't have with a language barrier like that.
Anyway. Yea. Just the idea that the first time Simon meets Grace is when Grace is at his weakest & lowest. How massively that would impact their interactions
art dump continues!
