I rewatched Crazy rich asians recently and now all I can think off is a CRA inspired AU with the girls lol
Rumi is working on her Bussiness degree in an american college, working very hard while also enjoying that all the way there she's at least a little bit more invisible. That she doesn't have the weight of her last name always looming over her shoulders like it does back in Korea, where her mother was one of the founders of the biggest entertainment company in the country, that her aunt and guardian controls now and Is always working to make even bigger as her way to honor Miyeong's legacy after her and her husband tragically passed.
Rumi is expected to finish school and go back to Korea to start interning at the company and eventually take the reigns from Celine. She has always known this, and she's accepted it.
Enter Marine Biology major, Music Production minor, half-korean Zoey into the picture. She's excitable, so earnest and positive, and so, so unaware of Rumi's family when they first meet. Rumi is charmed on the spot and quickly falls in love with her. She also enjoys a little too much the fact that Zoey doesn't know about what waits for her back in Korea, so she decides to wait a little more before breaking out the news to her about who she is actually dating. And then she keeps waiting... And she Is gonna tell her for sure! But It's not a great time for it...she will do it ...eventually.
Cut to a couple years in the future, they have been together for a while and Rumi has come to really love the life she's building in USA with her, when she recieves the notice that her childhood best friend, Jinu, is getting married, and he has made it extremelly clear that she better be there or he's never gonna let her live it down. And listen, Jinu may be an idiot... But he really is her best friend and she loves him, so time to get ready for her first trip back to Korea in years.
I'd like to think that Rumi would at least be slightly smarter then Nick and give Zoey a heads up before going... But let's be honest we all know how avoidant out dumb little demon can be...so even thought I firmly believe Zoey would be vaguelly aware of Sunlight Enterteinment and its recent expansions to other fields of bussiness, I think she justo wouldn't think her Rumi Ryu is part of that Ryu family. So she more or lessgets thrown in the middle of the High class wedding planning and celebrations with no warning still. (Don't worry guys she's taking it like a champ! Totally not freaking out!!) (Lies, She's 100% freaking out!!?? What do you mean she has been dating the future CEO of Sunlight Enterprises???)
First time oficially meeting the family and while Rumi has to go take care of some things with Celine, who is definitely not happy that Rumi took so long to return home and definitely didn't give Zoey the warmest welcome, Zoey stays downstairs meeting some people and basically gathering that her presence is pretty much unwelcome. Rumi has been one of, if not the, most sought after bachelorette between the youths of korea's chaebol and magnates, and to have her return now with a "girlfriend"? Simply disgraceful and dissapointing. And people pull no punches taking about how Zoey's probably just a gold digger and the relationship is in no way gonna last.
Zoey ends up wandering in search for a quite place where she can be miserable in peace, and when she enters a seemingly empty sitting room she thinks she found It, crumbling down on the floor feeling like a fool, only to realize she wasn't completely alone after all when a very beautiful stranger with pink hair enters from the balcony doors.
Now, while throwing ideas around with my girlfriend about the AU I wasn't 100% sure about Mira's roll: she could either be a Peik Ling type of character, in that she could be Zoey's friend who helps her navigate the traitorous high class society, being ex-chaebol herself. Or she could be more of an Amanda roll, being Rumi's slitghtly bitter ex who's definitely not over her (but of course she also falls for Zoey's charms and with her help she's able to resolve things with Rumi too and Polytrix happens). And gf's vote was to do both.
So Zoey meets incredible beautiful and sharp-tonged but also exceptionally sweet Mira, who is quick to sit with her and listen to her troubles, and doesn't censor herself on how stupid everyone else is being and how Zoey shouldn't even give them the time of day. Mira doesn't mention having dated Rumi, and when eventually Rumi finds them, she doesn't either.
(Side note: I think if we want to have things angsty/dramatic it would be a great add on that one of the reasons Rumi and Mira broke up was that Rumi was scared to come out since Korea is very conservative about that stuff and Mira was tired of pretending. Mira would probably have come out on her own years ago, leading to her being more or less disowned by her family, but of course they could not shut her off completely because Mira had already made a name for herself in their bussiness and is too good of an asset to renounce. Mira would also be slitghtly bitter at the start that Rumi didn't want to reveal their relationship back in the day, but is now returning home with a new girlfriend).
Rumi and Zoey talk after the reunion and Rumi apologizes a lot for not telling her before, specially since she have always known she's supposed to come back, marry some rich korean kid and become the leader of SE. But she just loved the life she was building with Zoey on the other side of the world a little too much.
...Aaaaand that's basically most of what I have about it lol if you've watched the movie/read the novel you know how the rest would go. Zoey does her best to prove that even if she's just an "American nobody" she can pull her weight to stand tall next to Rumi. We have wedding shenanigans, Mira and Zoey get closer while Mira helps her navigate the shark-infested waters. Bobby is there as Celine assistant and being the best as usual, loving Zoey just on how happy she makes Rumi (just like Mira used to do...). Eventually Zoey learns about Rumi and Mira's past relationship and she feels hurt that neither of them told her about it and it turns out its because there are still too many unresolved feelings between them (and of course the feelings get resolved when the three of them understand that they want to be all together and Polytrix wins~). Celine is pretty much being a dick for most of the story because she cares so much about Miyeong's material legacy that she can't see how much it has been hurting her actual legacy, her child, but ultimately Zoey and Mira can get her to see it and she fixes her ways.
I picture the ending being more in line with the book in that Rumi ends up deciding to walk out on her fortune and her parents legacy to persue a diferent dream with her girls, but I could also picture the movie's fairytale ending happening so open to both ideas lol.
