On the night of August 2nd, 1944, the ‘Gypsy Camp’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau was officially shut down. What this means is that the German soldiers killed everyone inside: in a single night, 2897 people (including 400 children) died in the gas chambers.

It is difficult to estimate how many Roma and Sinti were killed during the Porajmos (literally, ‘the Devouring’; it must be noted, however, that the use of the word is controversial), but it seems likely that up to 50% of the European-based communities - 250,000 to 500,000 people - were massacred by the Nazi regime.

In 1935, the Romani people, like the Jews, were proclaimed ‘enemies of the race-based state’, thus losing their right to vote and marry outside the community, but their persecution in Europe dates to much earlier than that: for instance, already in 1725, Prussian laws allowed for the hanging of ‘Gypsy men and women, if they are over 18, even if they did not commit any offenses’.

Since this persecution largely continues today, under various forms, the International Day of Remembrance for the Extermination of the Roma is not widely celebrated. It is, however, a good occasion to learn more about these horrifying events and remember that around 17 million people were killed in the Holocaust - Nazi genocidal policies didn’t target only the Jews: 

Holocaust victims were people who were targeted by the government of Nazi Germany for various discriminatory practices due to their ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, or sexual orientation. These institutionalized practices came to be called The Holocaust, and they began with legalized social discrimination against specific groups, and involuntary hospitalization, euthanasia, and forced sterilization of those considered physically or mentally unfit for society. These practices escalated during World War II to include non-judicial incarceration, confiscation of property, forced labor, sexual slavery, medical experimentation, and death through overwork, undernourishment, and execution through a variety of methods, with the genocide of different groups as the primary goal.

For more than seventy years now we’ve been saying Never again - a promise that can only be fulfilled if we remember what happened and why.

Yeah, kids talk. If your kid doesn’t talk to you, it’s because of one of two reasons:

You’ve created such a hostile/unwelcoming home environment that they don’t feel comfortable enough to talk

You have signaled to them somehow, some way, that you don’t care about what they have to say. That what they have to say isn’t important.

Kids are not stupid, not at any age level. They pick up on shit and they remember and then when they grow to be teenagers, they know who they can talk to about stuff and who they can’t.

My 13 year old nephew is not particularly affectionate with his mother and he rarely talks to her about anything important, but there are times I can’t get that kid to stop hanging off me and he has those serious conversations with me, like when we discussed his friends coming out to him as bisexual.

It’s not even that hard to make a kid feel loved and welcome. I don’t even know what my nephew is talking about half the time with his games, but they’re important to him, so I let him talk and I make appropriate noises of shock and sympathy when they are needed.

He watches a lot of YT channels, so we’ve discussed the importance of regulating your media, because I don’t want motherfuckers like PewDiePie shaping his world view.

He reads anything from Stephen King to manga and he does that because I’ve been reading him books since he was a baby. I do it with all of my nieces and nephews; when they get school-aged and old enough to read on their own, our “us” time is going to the bookstore and letting them pick out a drink and a book.

Because reading is important to me and I want it to be important to them, too. Now, it’s not something I suggest, it’s something that my nephew asks for.

“I finished my book, Aunt [Dessie], when can we go to the bookstore again?”

And when I tell him a date, I make sure to keep it.

Saying, “You can talk to me about anything” and “you can rely on me” is all well and good, but words are just words. You have to mean it and you have to show them that you mean it.

Otherwise, when it gets to those important moments in their life, they’re gonna shut you out rather than let you in.

Here is a secret:

Children and adolescents are actually fucking desperate for adult attention and approval. They really are. Even the ones that have in fact kinda got fucked up so far and have learned that The Only Kind Of Attention They’ll Get Is Bad and so act like shitheads, or the ones that have learned to be inhibited (and it might not even be you who inhibited them, it mighta been their peers or some teacher somewhere, which sucks!) and learned that by showing need they’ll just end up humiliated, or whatever?

Yeah them too.

Kids want to make you happy.

They’re often TERRIBLE AT IT. They’re kids. Their brains don’t work right, their bodies are weird, they have terrible impulse control, horrible deferred satisfaction, they’re shitty at projecting future consequences, and especially if they HAVEN’T been taught they’re probably bad at showing you positive emotions!

They’re BAD AT IT. And they often don’t want anyone to know it. And they’re embarrassed about it.

But they desperately want to. So much.

So one of the most crucial things is:

a) make sure they know how to make you happy. Don’t assume they can figure it out! They probably can’t!

b) make sure that’s something that is literally possible for them to do.

c) make sure, when they do it, that you SHOW THEM YOU’RE HAPPY WITH IT.

It is absolutely ASTONISHING HOW FAST this can create a self-sustaining cycle with the SMALLEST of starts.

it’s fucking crazy to think about the amount of people who have sung bohemian rhapsody? like it’s such a unifying song, by nature of the fact that so many people know it. it holds so many good memories for me and other people. it’s a song you scream in the car with your friends while you drive around your boring hometown, it’s a song you drunkenly sing with your arm around your best friend, or a song you sing along to with strangers when it’s on in public. it’s bittersweet to think about freddie’s legacy carrying on like that through his masterpiece. freddie carries on because he’s a part of so many people’s good memories and bohemian rhapsody is a huge part of that.

we, as gay men, NEED to start listening to lesbians and their issues, we NEED to stop speaking over them and listen to what they have to say, we NEED to start standing up for them more often when someones being lesbianphobic. Rainbow flags can’t begin to tell the true story of the complex LGBT experience in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, if you listen to the types of stories that dominate Western media, you’d think that the biggest issues facing LGBT people in the Middle East are based purely on their identity as queer. Many people in the West have ideas about how queer people in the region should come out or live their lives. Some non-Middle Eastern LGBT activists are so eager to “save” queers in the Middle East that they’ll speak over Middle Eastern queers themselves.

Here’s the problem: when queers and other vulnerable communities are painted as simply needing to be saved, the logical conclusion is that the West should come in and do the saving. Many of the narratives around LGBTQ issues in the region implicitly or explicitly support Western imperialism and foreign occupation, or only talk about queer issues by painting the rest of the Middle East as backwards or stuck in time. This often creates more harmful prejudice, rather than helping to alleviate the problem.
