fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d
I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty
I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.
Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.
When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.
Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.
See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.
So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:
Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.

Housekeepers and Janitors Need Praise As Unsung but Very Much Important
Remember when the NRA told doctors to “stay in their lane” RE gun violence and #thisismylane trended as a result?
One of the tweets I saw was a surgeon who’d taken a picture of her OR, having just finished surgery on a young man who’d been shot. Blood. Everywhere.
This bloke retweeted her, mentioning that he worked as a cleaner in a hospital and had had to clean up stuff like this and worse.
Surgeon replied to him (and went up *greatly* in my estimation) and, despite living in different countries, thanked him for his hard work.
I can’t find the tweets sadly, but hers went something like;
“Without a clean and sterile operating room to work in, my team, our skills and the best medicines in the world are next to useless. You are doing invaluable work, without which my work would be impossible.”
I work as a nurse, and a huge amount of the care credited to us is actually certified nursing assistants, or CNAs (or “techs”). These are the folks who do a huge amount of the grunt work of cleaning up poop, changing dirty linens, feeding people, getting folks up to the chair and back to the bed, back and forth to and from the bathroom, etc, and they get paid, like, half of what we do.
I never see “CNA Appreciation Week” or “we love our CNAs” or people talking about how amazing our techs are.
God bless our CNAs. And housekeeping. And janitors, and supply staff, and sanitation workers, and all those folks doing the grunt work of making sure we’re not living in filth.
shoutout to our housekeepers (who do the food here) and cleaners and stores, who keep our cupboards stocked and order the stuff we need!
I remember working on a frailty ward way back when, and we had the same housekeeper covering mealtimes. Our patients would often stay for 2-4 weeks (which is really long for NHS acute hospital) with their delirium, behavioural symptoms of dementia and medical problems, and she remembered what each patient liked. The meal replacement drink flavours they liked, what kind of meat they liked, etc.
They did MUCH more to ensure our patients got nutrition than I ever could. (apart from meds reviews, pragmatic instructions etc)
oh also the porters, who know where absolutely everything is!! my first day at my current hospital, it was a lovely porter who showed me where to go
free my girl she did all that and that’s what makes her such a compellingly complex character. that’s her essence

In my heart of hearts, I believe two very important things:
1— Yes, TOS Kirk is better than Spock at chess, not because he's just a chaos agent or lucky or Spock is distracted and letting him win or any of the other ways of minimizing TOS's extreme clarity on this point. Kirk keeps winning, as Spock himself gradually comes to accept, because Kirk is better at chess.
Behind their mannerisms, Kirk is the cooler-headed and more relentlessly calculating of the two, and fuses not only exhaustive background information but very quick, versatile adaptation and application of information + tactics to changing circumstances, even when the change is highly unexpected. Spock doesn't adapt to breaks in routine or expectation as quickly or as smoothly, and ... lbr, he pretends he's not more of a hothead than Jim Kirk in his totality will ever be, but it's a dirty lie.
2— Speaking of which, once Spock learns poker? He's way better at it than James "any time weird powers strip away my iron grip on my weaknesses I get consumed in analysis paralysis" Kirk. Spock loses now and then through a) monumental bad luck that speaks poetically to him or b) brazen pretense so other crew members will keep the eternal Enterprise poker championship going, rather than getting so disheartened they give up altogether.
Anyone who suggests there's something un-Vulcan about Spock's embrace of poker gets the galaxy's most withering non-expression imaginable. Surak teaches the importance of absolute self-discipline very much including one's facial expressions, seeing multiple possibilities but maintaining commitment to one's decisions, and controlling one's emotions. There is nothing un-Vulcan about Spock's immaculate poker face or evolution into Enterprise card shark.
Memory Alpha disagreeing for the silliest reason imaginable is, unfortunately, extremely Memory Alpha:
Hello, Hello! If you could get a TV show or shows to be produced and aired, what would it/they be?
I have so many ideas for fiction ones but my two favorite ideas are not fiction story based. I would love to be able to make a show that is basically animal friendly renovations. Like designing cat walls, catios, aviaries, ponds, gardens, fencing, just all the things for all the pets. The second that I would love to do is star in a show that showcases weddings and wedding traditions from across the world. It's definitely a more selfish one because I want to be dressed up in all the pretty things and in all the ways and get to remarry my partner over and over.
*Asks are sent for fun, no pressure on answering at all or quickly.
ohhh those were so wholesome ideas, I loved it!!!
I haven't thought about this for a while, so I'm drawing a blank...
I would want more brazilian fictional shows about football (for such an important part of our lives, there's few of it) and maybe in general shows about ficcional bands. I'm watching one because it has a actor I like and a girl as a drumer, but I'm not really enjoying it (I'm not buying the romantic interest/leader and they are pushing too hard into his "brilliance" - and it's annoying me). Idk, both are too interesting setting that are built for drama.
