These are 16th century Renaissance inspired hotpants, panelled with navy velvet with a red silk lining and hand-embroidered butt slogan, which I believe is like 300% historically accurate. They’re actually modelled off a genuine Tudor pattern but then made ridiculous because who am I.

Worn with thigh highs and a 18th C shirt cuz it was all I had to hand and frankly shirts don’t change that much lol.

You have to be careful with your knight. They’re not used to gentleness, and it might take some time for them to accept it. The first time you remove their helmet, they may not be able to meet your gaze. This is normal. There’s a lot more of you to take in than through a visor, and it can be overwhelming. Don’t expect them to make eye contact immediately. When you undress the rest of them, go slowly. You’ll be forced to because of the very nature of the armor they live in. Make sure you pause after every piece and allow them to get used to freedom once more. It’s especially important for them to breathe deeply once you’ve removed both cuirass and gambeson. Place your hand over their heart to ensure they take a few deep breaths from the chest before you continue. When you are finished playing the part of squire, be sure to give them something else to wear. They’ll feel far too exposed at first. Make sure it’s something light, they don’t need any more weight on their shoulders. Do not be surprised if their hands tremble when you take them. The feel of your hands is a far cry from that of their gauntlets, and it may take some time for them to adjust to the softness. Reassurance is your friend with a vulnerable knight. Encouragement can also aide you, but be cautious to avoid overuse. If your knight feels pressured, they will revert to their training, and you will never know their true self. If it is your wish to have a knightly lover, do not glorify the shell, but rather, cradle the creature within.

More pictures of The Shirt!

My projects keep being decided by random bits of nice fabric I find at the thrift store, and this time it was a big piece of 100% cotton voile in a spectacular shade of red that just looked like it wanted to be a dramatic shirt.

The fabric was only a metre wide and had nice selvedges, so I cut the sleeves and body the full metre wide, and it's fine enough that the bulk wasn't a problem. The rest of the cut and construction is the same as my usual 18th century machine sewn shirts (which I swear I will make an updated tutorial for before the year is over - the shirt post I keep linking people to is almost 4 years old and I've made improvements since then).

The fabric was $3, was in 2 halves that were zig-zagged together for some reason, bled a lot of dye into the sink when I washed it, and still smells a little bit weird even after washing. I hope the rest of the dye stays put because I really don't want this colour to fade.

I kept a timesheet for this and it took 13 hours and 12 minutes, which I think is pretty good. That includes the time spent making the 2 thread buttons for the collar.

(Also there is no drink in that brass goblet, only some dust and a small pinecone.)

This just showed up in my notifications again, so since Halloween is approaching I feel I ought to mention that I did finally make an updated tutorial, with both written and video versions! The only difference in cut is the larger width of the sleeve and body pieces.

You can do it! Finish the cardigan first, and then it's shirt time!! It is so very difficult sometimes to finish a thing before starting a new thing, but it can be done!

Also, last year I made basically the same shirt as the red one again, but in black. And I have the fabric to do a third one in purple...

This one was very, very loosely based on reconstructions of the Sutton Hoo helmet. I called it Heregríma, meaning roughly "war-mask", one of many terms used in Beowulf to describe a face-covering helmet. Blackwork on 28-count, worked over 2 threads/stitch. Each section is outlined in pale metallic gold thread, couched. It's difficult to see in photos, but in person you get just a little sparkle around the edges, which is what I was going for.
