"Being little isn't so bad! Uh, here! Pretend THIS is the Platinum Chip!" "...It's a tin can.""Yes it is! But let's say that it is."
It took me forever to realize Yes Man is played by Dave Foley. I've played through New Vegas a dozen times (And almost always choose the Independent New Vegas route), but FINALLY realized just who your best robot hype man is. Best part is that he really does have some Flik energy to him at times:
Human Dot's traveling the wasteland with her pet giant ant. You know it's hers because of its stylish headwear. There are many giant ants like it, but this one's hers.
@abugeatbugworld, I blame you. Thank you. Anyway, Pixar girlies! Been a while since I drew Human!Dot, and she needed a friend. So Boo! She comes out. Been wanting to do something with her for a long time since she's so fricken cute, and now I have that excuse. Do try and keep up with them. And do keep them away from any biker gangs, purple snakes, or ethically-dubious ways of keeping a company from dying.
A whole buncha Atta, with bonus Hornet shipping because one can never have enough bug princesses.
Also bonus Dot, because I love you:
I absolutely love this shot of Atta. She's so, SO mad. The grumpy sass is just radiating off her. I had to draw it.
Would it be correct to assume that the bugs in your AUs age at the same rate as humans do? I remember in one scene of A Bug's Life an older male ant claiming that he "feels 70 again". I don't know of any arthropod that lives that long.
It would, yeah. I mean real life ants live on average two years at most, which is way too little time for our bugaboos. I've seen some people swap out years for "seasons" which is a fun compromise, but I like to keep it simple. They're sentient, they're as smart as us, let them have their lifespans.
Considering that the characters in your Bug's Life crossover AU are fully-clothed, I wonder if they have to think about grooming and hygiene, like humans do.
So fun fact, ants are extremely clean for insects! Little things are obsessed with it, since they're so social. That's why you soo often see them grooming their legs, antennae, and each other. Keeping clean keeps them both healthier and helps their senses stay focuses (especially sense of smell). Keeping the colony clean is also one of the main jobs of the worker ants, constantly carrying out potential infectants like food waste or dead ants. All this cleaning and grooming keeps things like fungi, harmful microbes, and parasitic nematodes from contaminating both the colony and its food supplies. (Source: https://antsauthority.com/are-ants-dirty-or-clean/) Likewise, I think we can assume our Ant Island friends are much the same. Probably not gnawing on their legs to clean themselves, but still wanting to be neat and tidy. One of the picture books even featured Flik and Atta making a makeshift shower after falling in a mud puddle, so it's definitely a familiar concept to them.
So, yes, my own takes on our bugaboos do like to be clean. Now, being insects, they don't have to worry about all the same things we do (sweat, hairs, etc.), but a clean exoskeleton and a clean outfit are still as enjoyed by them as they are by us. Being covered in berry juice and sticky sap all day does not a good time make.
So, my lovely bugaboos, I am on the hunt for something. Back in '98-'99, there was a massive Bug's Life display in FAO Scharz in New York. I had a chance to see it as a wee lad, but I cannot, for the life of me, find any real photos or footage of it anywhere. The closest I've found is this blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot from this home video:
So, I ask, does anyone have anything more on it? It's one of those things that's been at the back of my mind for years and it's an itch I can't scratch.
Dot is on Hopper-watch duty to make sure he never avoids his grain collecting taks. She’s good at it.
A Bug’s Life fanart.
"You call that a throw? Watch this, runt."
Well, good news, Dot! You can finally fly on your own! I mean you can't really steer or get down when you want or really do anything except hang on, but hey! You ARE flying! Flik, get ready to catch her!
A roar.
A stomp.
A squelch.
Gurgles.
Molt couldn't watch. He looked away, not caring if Hopper saw his weakness or not. It hardly mattered anyway - the noises told the story perfectly.
No, he had to distract himself. Focus on anything, anywhere else.
He looked to the rest of the royal family - to the queen, and her young daughter. The queen was cradling the little girl, holding her in her arms and pressing the princess's face to her bosom, shielding her child from the horror, though unable to shield herself.
Molt could only hope it was enough. But he knew better. There wasn't any escape from this. He knew it, the queen knew it…
Hopper knew it.
It didn't matter if you looked or not. You knew what was happening. You knew what Thumper was doing to the prince. The cracking, the crunching…
The chewing…
Molt turned away from the queen and her daughter, looking at the rest of the colony. The ones in the fancy hats stared in horror, their faces frozen. Most of the common folk hid their faces, shutting their eyes, or - like Molt - tried to focus on anything but the horror show in front of them.
And then there was Hopper.
Only Hopper watched on, fully, properly, utterly unmoved. His face was just as stony as it had been before while listening to the Prince. He looked bored, but Molt knew his brother better than that.
No, Hopper was taking in every detail.
And there was just the faintest curl of a smile on his lips.
Their eyes met for just a moment, a smug, challenging look in Hopper’s glare before he turned his gaze to the royals. He studied them for a long few seconds, then turned his attention back to Molt.
And grinned.
Molt knew what that look meant. He had seen it a thousand times growing up. He had seen it a thousand more times ever since Hopper had formed their gang. Molt knew exactly what it said - what it was specifically saying to him.
“Watch this, little brother.”
With a practiced, predatory ease, Hopper loped casually away from Thumper. He turned towards the queen and her daughter, a sway in every step as he approached them.
Neither ant noticed his presence until he was looming over the queen.
She jumped and took a step back from Hopper, but it was too late. All four of his arms descended on her as he sprang forward. The lower pair held the queen’s own arms, trying to pry them apart, while the upper…
He released the queen, shoving her down to the ground. Thora tried to stand, only to be met with Hopper’s foot on her back, pushing her down into the gravel. A few of the council members broke their horrified stupor, trying to come to their queen’s aid, only to stop when Hopper pressed his foot down harder.
“Ahh ahh ahh, no. I’m setting an example.”
Hopper stood there, his foot on the queen, holding something squirming in his arms. Molt couldn’t make it out. What was he do-?
Hopper stepped off the queen, satisfied the message had gotten through to the council. With that he turned back, returning to where he had been watching the execution.
But he was holding something this time.
No, someone.
In his arms, cradled like a newly-laid egg, was the princess. The tiny girl was hardly bigger than Hopper’s head, but she fought like a hornet trapped in a web. She kicked, she squirmed, she even buzzed her thin, undeveloped wings like she could fly away.
But it did her no good. Hopper didn’t even have to adjust how he held her until he lifted her up to look her in the eye. He grinned a wide, toothy grin at the princess as he held her up, looking her over.
That stopped her squirming.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?” He cooed at her. “Come on, don’t be shy. You can tell Uncle Hopper.”
She stayed silent as she stared at him, eyes wide with fear. And so he squeezed her.
She let out a yelp, and his grin faltered just for a second. But it was long enough.
“A… A-a…” she stuttered.
“It’s rude not to tell someone when they ask, princess.” He held her a little closer, his nose nearly touching hers. “Now… Tell me.”
Her lip trembled. She swallowed. She finally spoke.
“A…A-Atta… Princess At-”
“You know what, I don’t care.”
He lowered her, just enough to look over the top of her head, through her small, curled antennae. This time, she didn’t squirm, didn’t try to free herself. No, she was as still as a stone in his grip, daring only to move her eyes, and barely at that.
Ever since he had grabbed the little princess, Hopper had been slowly, ever so slowly, sidling back to Thumper. The monster was still hard at work, and Molt could only hope the prince had died by now.
What was Hopper doing? He wasn’t… No, no he wouldn’t! Not even Hop would be that cruel, surely! He wasn’t going to toss the princess to…
Hopper stopped, standing back where he had started.
Molt shifted nervously on his feet. Don’t do it, Hop. Don’t do it…
Hopper met his eye again, before looking back and forth between Thumper and the little princess. He gave each a long, exaggerated stare, before seemingly weighing the little princess.
As if he was about to toss her.
He was barely half an inch away from Thumper, watching him tear the Prince Consort to more and more pieces. As mangled and brutalized as he was, he was still all too recognizable.Hopper was counting on it.
And that’s when it clicked. Hopper wasn’t going to toss her to Thumper.
No, he was going to be far, far crueler.
“I want you to see something, princess. I want you to learn something.”
He spun her around, turning her to face the grizzly scene. Forcing her to see the remains of her father. Forcing her to see his executioner go about his bloody work.
But she wasn’t having it. She turned her head away; she shut her eyes as tight as her delicate lids would let her; she even covered her face with her hands and arms, trying to block out the horrific sights and sounds all at once.
“Princess…” Hopper snarled. He unfurled his upper pair of arms, reaching for her head.
“I want you to see this…”
He pulled her arms away from her face.
“I‘m going to teach you something.“
His hands gripped the sides of her head, forcing her to face forward.
“Something I want you to remember.”
The tips of his claws latched onto her eyelids, and he pried them open.
And she looked. She took it all in, every horrible sight. Every horrible sound. She took in every moment of the nightmare playing out before her, mere steps away.
“You see that, sweetheart? Do you see what’s happening to your daddy?” He crooned in her antenna, holding her in a vice as every part of her trembled.
She was beyond sound, beyond response save for hyperventilating. She was the image of terror, and Hopper was lapping it up.
“That,” he leaned in even closer, his maw practically touching her pale cheek, “is what happens to people who say ‘no’ to me.” *** So, after over a year, the fourth chapter of "Go Ahead, Take her" is out! https://archiveofourown.org/works/55676191/chapters/193595046 Aaaand in it Hopper is seen at his worst, something poor Atta had to suffer.

i mean this so seriously if you have any sort of creative project you can and should be a little obsessed with it. you should reread your own writing and look at your own art and brag about your ocs its literally good for your health
This recently came across my timeline on Twitter ala @coelasquid and it’s too good not to include.
Kelly Turnbull is so fucking wise
“Intense NPC energy” is the best possible description for this phenomenon. They’re right. The characters all have NPC energy in these movies.
My style is never consistent. I’m trying to push my proportions to more cartoony. The antennas are the hardest part for me. This came out way too cutesy but I like it.
"way too cutesy"
Yeah, but Atta's a cutie patootie so you did her justice.
I blame @abugeatbugworld
I don't think Dot's loving this swap too much. She likes her girly stuff to a point, sure, but this is just going too far. Why'd you put a bow on your clothes? And forget flying in this junk. It's like wearing a windsock. Olive Olivia, on the other hand, thinks these weird trousers are pretty neat. Look how many pockets they have! Do you know how much evidence (and spare cheese crumpets) she can carry in these? She's not eager to swap back.
