Apropos of nothing, limiting early 401(k) access to hardship withdrawals is absolute bullshit.

First off, the fact that you have to have already been served an eviction notice to access your funds instead of accessing it to stop that eviction notice from ever arriving is stupid.

Second, the fact that most eviction notices give you a very short time, if any at all, to rectify whatever the issue is in order to not be evicted, so having to wait for some underpaid public servant to go through all your paperwork and then wait for a check to be mailed to you is practically guaranteeing the hardship withdrawal will not arrive in time to save you.

Third, it's frustrating and humiliating being subjected to nitpicky questions like "I notice the amount requested is less than the total amount of your rent" when "I was able to pay all but this $300 of my rent" is fairly obvious AND the exact amount you requested is already the amount listed as past due on the eviction notice.

Third, did I mention it's my own damn money?! It's not like I'm filling out forms for a loan or a payday advance or anything like that. This is the song and dance I'm required to go through to access my Own Damn Money in my own damn retirement account.

So I'm sitting here with $19k of my own money behind a stupid glass wall, about to be evicted for want of $300 because of this stupid process.

I've heard a lot of really stupid takes on social media today. And I won't share the stupidest because of the sheer hypocrisy and unfounded rumor-mongering involved, but I will share the second stupidest.

Which is the idea that an actor doing/saying something problematic on Twitter should be some kind of "wake up call" for fans of a character that actor plays to rethink their emotional investment in the character, and the implication that continuing to be a fan of the character is tantamount to being part of a cult.

Like...tell me you really don't understand the difference between fiction and reality without telling me! You're all the way down the purity culture rabbit hole, but you think I'm in a cult?

I'm not going to weigh in on Con's comment or subsequent apology. It's just not my place. But the purity culture-fueled virtue signalling I'm seeing from predominantly pasty-white fans going I TOLD YOU SO about a fictional character based on the fuck-up of an actual person is so unspeakably fucking stupid.

I feel like signs like this of where the web is going are the number one sign to delete accounts on sites like TikTok and start using places that prioritize privacy even if their methods are imperfect. Any nugget of privacy you can get is crucial now.

Install duckduckgo and decentraleyes, use signal or element instead of discord for sensitive discussions, try not to post your face or name at all, and if you do don't do so extensively.

Make a DRM free music repository and for the love of God install an adblocker, hell if you have the free time make your own website and rss feed!

Make the web work for you instead of being a passive product. If a forum or site asked for like my id or passport to prove I was able to register or access parts of it a few years back I would think it's identity theft, and now it's just something that people view as fuckin everyday shit. Christ!!!

And uninstall TikTok! Uninstall Facebook Instagram any shit unless u know what you're getting into and put up several layers to stop tracking. Like. God. Dystopic shit here.
