The BBC vs ABC
âaverage person eats 3 spiders a yearâ factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
#tapping the reblog button with utmost care because iâm handling a historical artifact (via @malarkiness)
holy shit OP is not only still active but is still making absolutely banger posts in this exact style 11 years later
A 2025 update
I paid rent for years to a landlord who never did anything to maintain our old building. We could see the sky laying in our bed. Squirrels in the walls, mice and/or roaches every time someone in the building moved out.
figs have returned to my neighborhood and along with them my annual question: why is the guy down the block growing so many figs
he has one mature tree that makes big fat pendulous green figs in large quantities every year. because i walk around at 3am all year round and really snoop around everyoneâs yards, i have a good idea of who is doing what at any given time. and i can tell the fig guy (no clue who it is or if its a guy) takes ve try good care of the tree. prunes it judiciously, cleans it up, it never has any pests or injuries.
so when i moved here six years ago there was the one tree. then he propagated two new clones into the same yard, which was previously just a modest sloped lawn. the building is i think a 4-plex, probably from the 60s, very modest. wouldnt be surprised if it was a small landlord who lives in one of the units. then he planted a third clone. now hes started cloning them into the front yard too. but hes not really big on the fruit, like every single year i will scrump that tree as much as i physically can, 5-10lbs a year at least, and more of the fruit gets eaten by birds or raccoons or falls into the dirt. theyre very good figs, maybe not rate or amazing but there are thousands of fig varieties and i have no idea which one this is. it doesnt seem special in any way. the figs are very delicious but not spectacular. and hes not running a big harvest operation, he doesnt guard the trees with a fence or a sign or any surveillance. i have never seen anyone interact with the trees even during the day. so whats he doing
i mean cloning trees and growing them is a very solid hobby and i clone my houseplants for the same reason, its fun. i dont need more plants. i need fewer plants actually. but my houseplants dont get thirty feet tall and drop a carpet of rotting fruit onto the floor every year. so im just baffled at his motivations. he doesnt seem to want figs. but hes turning his entire yard into a fig orchard
i assume you meant the trees but here are the fruits in the meantime. very beautiful
Should I be saving my money for a down payment on a house and getting rid of furniture so I have less to move? Yes. And also yes.
But consider:
She's $300 and I need her
She's here!!
This side-by-side was built by the Rockford Desk and Furniture Co., which only existed from 1891-1895. I've found one singular other example of this cabinet, which was auctioned over a decade ago, and was stained a dark cherry color. I personally like the color of the quartersawn oak as it is, so I'm not planning a full restoration.
mummies? genus of the zombie family. the two are not taxonomically exclusive groups, educate yourself
Also skeletons by that logic.
A lot of people make this mistake actually! âSkeletonâ can refer to any individual member of the family Zombie that has shed its fleshy exoskeleton. Itâs just an unlife cycle stage, but because of its distinct appearance we refer to it by a separate common name (similar to how a âblack pantherâ is just a colour variant of leopards and jaguars, not a separate species).
Okay, so I think this is a point of confusion.
The term âzombieâ is both a technical term, referring to a family, and a common name, referring to a genus.
The family Zombie is a broad, overarching group that includes the genus that many people call zombie (Ghoulus, not to be confused with Ghouli, the unrelated genus of the Ghala family which also includes bogeymen and some ghosts*) as well as the Mummy genus (Pyrima), the spore-zombie genus (Fungan) and a few others.
The colloquial term âZombieâ is the common term for the genus Ghoulus, which is in the family Zombie and includes Ghoulus romero (the walking zombie), Ghoulus snydera (the running zombie), and Ghoulus smithi (the vampiric zombie, also called the legendary zombie).
Interestingly, there are several things called âzombiesâ that are neither Ghoulus nor Zombie, including the dancing zombie (Jacksoni thrillera), which is more closely related to (although not currently actually in the same family as) clowns.
*Note: the ghosts in the Ghala family are not true ghosts. True ghosts are in the order Spectere, which is entirely unrelated to Ghouli, Ghoulus, Pyrima, and Fungan. Ghala âghostsâ are given the common name ghost because of their superficial similarity to true ghosts.
Important note: sometimes youâll see people claiming that zombies are domesticated! They are not! Some zombies can be tamed (like Ghoulus romero), but zombies are wild animals and might hurt you if you approach them! Leave them alone and donât feed them!
are there any domestic ghosts?
this is a great question! hereâs the answer:
the closest to a domesticated ghost we have is the house ghost, Phantome domus (sometimes classified as a distinct subspecies Phantome domus domesticus).
P. domus is interesting because itâs like housecats â they are technically domesticated (scans have shown that the fight-or-flight response, like in domesticated animals, is weaker in P. domus than in related species like P. majestica, the manor ghost, or P. more, the cemetary ghost), but evidence suggests that itâs a naturalistic co-evolution rather than an intentional domestication process like with sheep or dogs.
If a house ghost takes up residence in your home, they are completely safe unless treated in an inhumane way. There is a stereotype of house ghosts that they are dangerous or volatile, but this is usually due to confusion with other species, especially the common poltergeist (Sellaruptor vulgaris) or vengeance spirit (Phantome odium).
Ghostbusters remake but theyâre biologists running a catch and release program
I love scientifically explained fantasy. It is so much fun exploring the fantasy world in terms of biological phenomena.
listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.
This is actually what I was adviced to do at the work rehabilitation program I went to. Hasn't left my mind since. 10/10 solid advice
Same advice my dad used to give.

Hey. Why isnât the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnât that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatâs absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatâs a big deal! Iâve never thought about it before but now that I have, itâs ridiculous to me that thatâs not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donât we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itâs July 20th. Thatâs the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iâm ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iâm going to have a goddamn potluck. Youâre all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
MOON DAY MONDAY THIS MONTH NOT A DRILL!!!!!
omg my pass day is moon day that's so cool
everyone needs to make art now!!!! doesn't matter what it is. put something in the world that came from YOU!!! that's what it's all about!!!
MAKE IT WITH YOUR BRAIN, WITH YOUR HANDS! AI is the death of creativity
As AI threatens to assimilate human creativity into meaningless sludge, it is more important than ever to make art
Make art with all the flaws, all the weirdness, all the eclectic and unexpected things that come from the human mind
It's not important to be good at it
It's important because humans need art to survive
Getting #BlackRock to change/exit the real estate market in NYC is a massive win for New Yorkers and #ZohranMamdani.
one parasite down, too many to go!
I thought black rock ticks carried that disease that made you allergic to red meat?
Just a guess, but yeah. But I also get sick from fish and fowl so I'm not sure.
Hello đ can we please follow me back so that we can be friends?
Do I know you? I don't see any political post or Fandom in your blog.
And now they are running the country....
Platner shouldâve been thoroughly vetted before running, there were all kinds of red flags right off the jump. The fact he evidently wasnât, and got as far as he did before it blew apart, isnât a great look for democrats imho. Yeah they finally got there, but itâs possibly going to cost them a winnable seat.
please wear sunscreen!!! I've seen "fuck the beauty industrial complex" posts about complicated skincare regimens and am 100% with them except sometimes they mention sunscreen and no. no. absolutely not. sunscreen is a wonderful supportive friend who wants to keep you safe, and you should let her do it. throw out all your other cosmetics and skincare products if you want, but keep your sunscreen. and if you're not wearing sunscreen, start wearing it!!!! this is not about terror of aging, this is not about every tiny imperfection our fucked-up culture has made you feel insecure about, this is about protecting yourself from skin cancer. wear the damn sunscreen.
And LISTEN, if you are hesitant. i know sunscreens can be pricey. and theres a lot of fearmongering around cheaper sunscreens. and i know they make your eyes sting. and i know it can feel gross is u have sensory issues. but please hear me out. invest in 1 big tube of cheaper sunscreen and 1 smaller tube of any 'new generation' sunscreen that won't sting (reddit is a great place to look for recs). both at least spf50 and pa+++. use the more expensive one for the UPPER PART OF YOUR FACE. and the cheaper one for the rest of your face and body. apply generously and reaply.
If your skin is darker and you're worried about the white pasty sheen that sunscreen can leave on your skin, stay away from the mineral ones and look for the ones that say "clear" or have good reviews from other poc! I use Neutrogena Invisible sunscreen on my face and Hawaiian Tropic on the rest of me, and it works for my sister too -- for visual clarification we span the following skin tones:
If you still find it looks a lil ashy on your face, mix in a dot of tinted moisturizer or foundation. You need barely any at all and you can use a BB cream or something else that's super light coverage if you don't care for makeup.
My child (now teen) with sensory issues also discovered that allocating time for sunscreen helped: before going outside, they apply the sunscreen at their own pace and then wash their hands to remove the feeling of residue. If you don't like the feel, maybe changing the context/speed can help. (They can see my multiple Mohs and biopsy scars so they know it's worthwhile.)
For those who hate stickiness but donât mind the risk of oiliness, Iâve really been enjoying Supergoopâs SPF oil. It absorbs pretty well and is way lighter than anything else Iâve ever tried. Or at least I feel like âlightweightâ sunblock makes me feel dry+sticky as opposed to normal sunblockâs goopy+sticky. The oil is just oily, without being sticky.
Itâs pricy, but it held up on a high-elevation hike on a 9â10 UV index day with only two applications the whole day.
Caveat: Iâm very skeptical at their claim that itâd last in water, because oil and water are pretty famously incompatible. I also havenât tested it for heavy sweaty workouts. But itâs sooo nice otherwise!
Also remember:
1) reapply every hour
2) WASH IT OFF WHEN YOU'RE DONE. That's important. Leaving it can cause acne and while you may be "fuck the beauty-industrial complex" (frankly I'm with you), acne can actually cause skin infections that hurt, leave potentially damaging scarring, and more. It's best avoided if it can be.
Wear Sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until theyâve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, youâll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you canât grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Donât worry about the future, or worry, but know that worry is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Donât be reckless with other peopleâs hearts. Donât put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Donât waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes youâre ahead, sometimes youâre behind. The race is long and, in the end, itâs only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Donât feel guilty if you donât know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didnât know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still donât.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. Youâll miss them when theyâre gone.
Maybe youâll marry, maybe you wonât. Maybe youâll have children, maybe you wonât. Maybe youâll divorce at 40, maybe youâll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, donât congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody elseâs.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Donât be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. Itâs the greatest instrument youâll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you donât follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when theyâll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. Theyâre your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, youâll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Donât expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe youâll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Donât mess too much with your hair or by the time youâre 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than itâs worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.â
