Shy Girls - Under Attack
Portland, Oregon: a place of misfits and a place of beauty.
That is exactly how this feels. Headed by Portland native Dan Vidmar is the gourgeous new project titled Shy Girls. His voice settles in nicely between the fog of the synth and the gratifying harmonies. With an early 90s feel, this soul jam will take you back, way back. The song gets even sweeter as soon as that jazzed up sax sways into the spotlight.
I can tell you right now that this is not the last time you will hear from Shy Girls. We need more indie soul in this world. Stream his previous effort Sex in the City EP.

Real Estate’s band leader and BK scene king Matt Mondanile has been running a boutique label, putting out limited wax of his friends’ material. His sixth release is from Alex Craig (of Big Troubles, Ducktails), with this new project that includes Ariel Zambenedetti and Eric Shaw. This b-side is a sweet blend of acid-washed vocals and low-end synth lines ripped from an 80’s teen pulp film.

Dumbo Gets Mad - South Africa [Crystal Balls on Roll]
Italian provocateurs of psychedelia, Lucas and Carlotta are stepping away from their warmer backgrounds, to shed light on what might be their new musical direction. The flute groove is evident right off the bat and along with the joint vocals, you are set into a time of the past. Tweed jackets, hats with feathers, vests, pocket watches and all.
They’ve injected soul that makes you feel alive and young.
The boys plan to follow up with a new LP in succession of their debut Quantum Leap via Bad Panda Records. s/o to Stadiums & Shrines for premiering this new track inspired by and written for Nathaniel Whitcomb’s work (top left) for their project.

It's not very often when you hear a song and it automatically clicks. In fact, it doesn't happen often enough. But this whole album sat with me, for a while. Artist Carol Rhyu translates her influences into a sound that traces every crease of your face with the supple touch of her fingertips.
She says: “Basically I was on this train and it was coming along until one day it totally derailed. We were probably going to get married, but I guess I was afraid of being a housewife, and it has haunted me ever since, so a lot of the songs are about that”.
This phases me. Grab the entire self-titled EP on Bndcmp and get swept away in her seductive whispers. I don't ever want to escape.
I was invited to the New Myspace (Beta) the other day and it's pretty stellar... Yes, the old MySpace is (thankfully and finally) gone and washed away at sea. Surprisingly Justin Timberlake did an rad job of freshening up, sophisticating and bringing back the name of MySpace. I'm still scoping out the scene but I'm already getting good vibes from it. The philosophy of connecting with various people (represented like a ven diagram) and the art of the horizontal scroll webpage, really sets a futuristic social networking environment, different then anything we've seen thus far. And damn, isn't that typography just somethin'...?

VOYAGEURS - Upside Down
Ah, yes. Fayetteville, Arkansas... where this recent outfit led by Andrew Donovan, brings blues around again with a smokier feel. I can almost taste the smokiness, that's how smokey this track is. Vocals with a side of grungy guitar, grilled to a brunt crisp. Don't really no much else about the band. Hey, the song is of their album titled "Untitled." It's time for you to take a helping for yourself.

Now, this might be the whitest statement ever, but he was/is my favorite Jazz composer. So to celebrate his life, there used to be a 30 minute video filmed in Belgium in October 10th, 1964 until a some greedy Belgiums claimed the video a copyright claim. So here is a hour long special with The Dave Brubeck Quartet and Ralph J. Gleason, syndicated jazz columnist, perform live at the Jazz Casual TV show, live in 1961.

Electric Flower Group - "The Electrician" (Cover)
Electric Flower Group are a electric-psych duo based in LA. For their new video "The Electrician," they've latched their track with the gonzo 1977 Japanese cult horror film House. The boys take a groovier Walker Brothers' classic, and fomulate a new side to the song that no one's ever heard. Combined with the insanely bizzare visuals, EFG's dark, sonic powered take, culminates into a sensory-overload freakout (both of which were personally approved by Scott Walker himself.) EFG, is comprised of guitarist Imaad Wasif and drummer Josh Garza (Secret Machines) have two EPs under the EFG moniker.
Along with brief stints in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lou Barlow's Folk Implosion, Wasif has released three solo albums. He also collaborated and wrote songs with Karen O for the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack.
Paperwolf - "int(r)o" + New Album: Into Forever

Each Other - Ash Mound
Hard hitting snare, twangy guitar, and the worn/troubled vocals of this song bring along a wintery mix with them. In fact, the whole album Heavily Spaced gives me that impression as well. As snow starts to touch ground here in New York, we're officially entering what we know as "Winter." What more could you ask for from a band out of Montreal.

Point Reyes - Cabbages
Propelled by a cello rhythm the backbone of this track is so unique yet sounds so right. Brooklyn musician Asa Horvitz takes on witty lyrics with this new single, bouncing through the beat of cellist Bryan West’s bow. This ought to be the soundtrack to the opening of a indie teen film. The wide cut opens on a kid kicking a stone done the road, back towards the camera, sunset glare in the lens, shakiness to perfection. Classic teens. That's what we do all day, we kick stones. This song is definitely relevant to that. Anyway, stay on tap with these kids, I'm sure there's more to come.
Ray Davies (The Kinks) - "Thanksgiving Day"
I'm going to visit some family in Baltimore for our annual Thanksgiving gathering. For family and for my own personal cleansing I will resist the urge to bring my computer, so this is a "be well" for the next few days.
