A piece from Willie Osterweil about our roots and how we work. We're learning new methods of investing that makes sense: our investments create zero debt and build worker-owned businesses. We've developed techniques that help us accompany these loans to success, and we're growing quickly. Read a little bit more about how we structure our work!
Strike debt is awesome!
Strike Debt, brought to you by many of the same people in Occupy, launched an initiative to buy debt for pennies on the dollar. They raised money with benefit concerts, donations etc.
This effort just saved 1,000 people from debt of more than $1 million owed to emergency rooms. The people will soon receive letters stating that their debt has been cleared!
Having some great conversations to shape collaboration and strengthen communities. #NYC #change #justice #economy (at NYU Wagner - Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service)
What's this? It's the first batch produced by the Vio.Me workers in Greece under worker control. Faced with few other options, the workers of Vio.Me occupied and reopened their factory as a cooperative. The courageous workers have taken their fate into their own hands, and have begun taking the steps to rebuild the economy from the bottom up.
We've seen this before. Our founder, Brendan Martin, went to Argentina and began our first "La Base" loan fund to support the first recovered factories in Argentina. It began with one factory. Today, there are over 200 factories that have been occupied and recovered- now under worker control. The Working World stands in solidarity and collaboration with the workers of Vio.Me and all workers who want to take a stand against exploitation.
Please share this great news and join the fight for a world without hierarchy and inequality.

Mutual and Co-operative insurers outperform the industry
Mutual and cooperative insurers have been significantly outperforming other insurance companies in the period since the global financial crisis of 2007-8.
According to new research by ICMIF, the period between 2007 and 2011 has seen premium income for the world’s mutual and cooperative insurers grow by 25.4%, compared to 12% for the insurance market as a whole.

Join our campaign to make our groundbreaking model of finance and make it available to everyone.
Thanks to one of our donors, the next $5,000 we receive in donations will be doubled. If we can fill the next $5,000 we will be at a total of $12,862 towards our year-end goal of $20,000.
For over eight years, The Working World has been in Argentina and Nicaragua developing a model of non-extractive finance that invests in cooperatives and other worker owned businesses. Last year we invested in the New Era Windows cooperative in Chicago, and we're ready to do the same across the country by extending our network to hire new team members, investment officers, and loan agents to grow and manage our fund and projects.
