I started listening to Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir at work this week. And can I just say WHAT THE FUCK.

I am so lost. I’m about ten hours into the audible version(I think it’s chapter 29)

I will have permanent marks from the furrowing of my brow. I understand that I will probably get it in time with a lovely grand reveal and I am enjoying the buildup but damn.

I repeat WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Bathroom brain surgery. Ianthe deciding she’s going to marry Harrow some day. Is this part of the alternate reality? In what world Ianthe? What the hell is going on???

My coworkers ears have been bleeding from the amount of profanity spewing forth from my lips on a daily basis listening to this.

I would also like it to be known that I love this book and this series no matter how insane it is.

This never occurred to me. Not once. That Americans are against Health Care because they think it actually costs tens of thousands of dollars for a broken arm, hundreds of thousands for a complicated birth, millions for cancer treatment.

Because they’ve never known anything different. The idea that a broken arm is only a couple hundred bucks; a complicated birth a couple thousand; cancer treatment only tens of thousands; all easily covered by existing tax structures.

This explains a lot.  And it’s a good example of what I was talking about in my post on scarcity being used to prop up ableism – always question the idea that a resource is genuinely scarce.  Even if it seems obvious that it is, quite often that’s the result of careful manipulation and misconceptions that you’re not even aware of.  

And never think you’re too smart to be fooled by that kind of thing, it doesn’t work like that.  Similarly, don’t think people who are fooled by something are stupid.  Nobody can have all the information about everything, and nobody has the time and energy to investigate and put together conscious conclusions about every piece of information they’re given.  It doesn’t take being stupid, or even just gullible, to believe something like this.

Yesterday I had to go to the hospital cause I injured my eye, I’m frankly dreading what the bill is going to be, but what made me balk was being told in the pharmacy that my insurance was denied for the antibiotic eye drops and it’d be over $100 out of pocket. So I didn’t get my eyedrops.

I’ve had these same drops before living in the UK. They cost me seven GBP.

It’s the exact same drug, same steroid, same strain of antibiotic. But somehow the US gets away with charging $100 for a generic non brand version of a drug which is easy to create and widely used. It’s downright robbery, but also a form of eugenics through poverty and class warfare. You keep the poor poor by making sure basic necessities remain unattainable and then you make it seem like the norm so no one fights it.

The rest of the world is not like this.

My blood pressure medication (Candesartan) costs between $40-$125 USD for 30 tablets in the US. Here in Germany, 98 tablets costs me 5 Euro.

Yeah man. I live in Canada and my grandparents were wintering in Arizona. My grandmother has tachycardia and ended up having to go to an Urgent Care center in AZ for an adrenaline shot. Upon submitting the bill to Alberta Health Care for coverage ABHC said they would only cover the cost of what it would cost in Canada.

In Alberta, that treatment cost $19.

In the AZ Urgent Care Center? $1,400.

Kingdom of ash made my coworkers think I'm crazy.

So I work a desk job and there's about 10 women that sit around me. As you all know Kingdom of Ash came out last Tuesday and as I also work a second job I didn't have the time to actually sit and read it. I thought "oh I'll just listen to it at work on audible. It'll be fine."

IT WAS NOT FINE

I started this 33 hour journey on Tuesday and was instantly crying listening to Rowan's point of view.

Cue judgy side eye

I then proceed to cry about a million more times. Not to mention gasps and alot of swearing fits and grumbling under my breath.

At this point the girl across from me has stopped listening to her music and has focused her attention on me. Because I'm "far too entertaining"

Then I think abraxos is going to die. And I drop a very loud and unceremonious F-bomb and proceed to uncontrollably sobbing at my desk. I had already said at the beginning of this that him dying was not an option and I'd lose my shit if it were to happen.

Manon said "I love you"

How does that not break your whole soul ?!?

Now my boss is walking up to me trying to figure out what in God's green earth is wrong with me and all I can say is Manon can love and it's beautiful and Abraxos better not die.

How dare this book rip my heart out at work.

I finished today while I was there. And I cried and cried. A coworker brought me chocolate cake so I could eat my feelings and they told me they had never seen someone so emotionally invested in a book.

Well when the writing and narrating is amazing (with the exception of Ansel of Briarcliff's awkward southern accent) and you've been with these characters for years it's sad to see it go.

Needless to say I wasn't ready for the goodbyes or the end. Not to mention I'll never listen to a book I'm so emotionally invested in at work the first time.
