This may be so random, but wait. I was reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontƫ, which, pardon me, I never have had the nerve to read until now. The thing is, I don't like stories with unhappy endings, but well, who does? Reading this book made me realize that WH did inspire parts of TID and maybe a little of TLH. I mean, not literally. We know that CC said that TLH was inspired by Great Expectations by Dickens, and it's not unusual for an author to be inspired by classics. Nothing is new in literature, and as Bakhtin would say, each text is in dialogue with other texts which it incorporates in a way or another. I believe that WH inspired Tatiana's story in relation to Will's mainly, and her children's stories as well in relation to Lucie and James.
In Ch. 3 of WT, after Lockwood goes to Heathcliff's house and stays the night in what used to be Catherine's room, he sees her notebooks where she wrote her name along with her surname plus her husband's surname (Linton) and Heathcliff's. This reminded me that we also have a scene in Lord of Shadows where Kit, Ty and Livvy go to Blackthorn Hall and Kit is intrigued by a piece of paper with the surnames Herondale and Blackthorn written several times.
At first, I believed that the piece of paper Kit had found could have been Lucie's property, maybe. After all, we know that Lucie is a dreamer and we also know from LoS that she carved LH + JB under her windowsill, just like this. I think the inspiration is there, but the piece I mentioned before clearly belonged to either Tatiana or even... Grace. It could be Tatiana's because of her past. It could be Grace's because she was meant to manipulate James but at the same time, we know from COI that Tatiana wanted to push Grace in the arms of her half-brother Jesse (ewww).
We know that Tatiana used to like Will, who was black-haired just like Heathcliff, and was also a little rude when he was younger. Tessa also compares him to Heathcliff a few times, so we have that. But Tatiana is also Heathcliff because she wants revenge. Tatiana grows to dislike Will when he keeps on being rude to her and then Rupert Blackthorn (who is also black-haired) enters the picture. I don't think Tatiana stopped liking Will altogether and her dreams that one day they'd get married, but the prospect of marrying Rupert was, in a way, better. Will was Heathcliff, an outsider in the shadow world, while Rupert came from a prominent family. Will was also poor. He earned money by serving the Shadowhunters because he had cut all of his relations with his family, and his family's wealth was also dissolving because of his father's addiction to playing. On the other hand, Rupert was Edgar Linton, the rich boy with a gold heart. Tatiana claims that while he was alive, he was nothing but good to her, but we don't know for sure). Both were handsome to Tati, but to her, the best marriage match would be Rupert without a doubt, because by marrying him her father would be proud. Whereas her father would have hated the idea of Will as his son-in-law -considering he also disliked Edmund very much and Will would have lowered Tatiana's status in the shadow world. And also... if Tatiana had married Will, we would have had no TID nor TLH, lol. Both of them do not have lingering feelings for each other after they got married to their partners. Will never liked Tatiana anyway. After Rupert (Catherine) dies, Tatiana (Heathcliff) keeps holding a grudge against Will and his friends and family, blaming them for her husband's death as well as her father's.
And then we get to the TLH timeline. In the years after TID, Will became very wealthy and powerful in the shadow world, although his family is still subjected to prejudice because he married Tessa. In a way, Will and Tessa are just a foil version of Heathcliff and Catherine, because they are never like the former. Although Will is compared to Heathcliff in appearance, and he does behave rudely at the beginning of TID, he is also compared to Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens and clearly the comparison to H. ends there. Tatiana has money as well, but her properties are in ruin and sadly, she has lost her son Jesse. In this case, Tatiana is still Heathcliff in the story.
In WH, Catherine and Heathcliff's love repeats through their children, but in a different way. While H. and C. loved each other, Cathy Linton (Edgar and Catherine's daughter) is manipulated into marrying Linton Heathcliff (Heathcliff and Isabella's son). This is what Tatiana wanted Grace to achieve with James, after all. But the ones who ended up falling in love were Lucie and Jesse. Linton also dies at 17, while Cathy survives him, and she is never allowed to leave WH because Heathcliff keeps Cathy and Catherine's brother Hareton (who is also 17) inside at all times. Tatiana also keeps Jesse and Grace in Blackthorn Hall and barely permits them to leave the premises. TLH's story starts with Jesse already dead and a ghost, so this is a different spin.
In the end, Cathy marries Hareton while Heathcliff dies and people say they see his and Catherine's ghosts finally able to be together forever in the afterlife. I think it could happen to Tatiana. I believe she might die and well, curse people at Blackthorn Hall like we're seeing in SOBH. We know that Rupert is still around as a ghost so Tatiana may also be there as well but they are not ghosts who want to be around each other. lol. Grace and James were like Cathy and Linton, not meant to be together like their parents Not only that, but I think that Lucie and Jesse's future looks more like Cathy and Hareton's, who decide to get married once Heathcliff (the obstacle) dies and they are able to do what they want with their life. So I hope that Lucie and Jesse will be together... somehow.

In August this year Dragonsteel asked me if I could add some concept art and designs as inspiration for the Worldhopper ball mainly to visualize the room and the wedding attire of both Adolin and Shallan.Ā
As usual I loved to get into the tiny details - from embroidery patterns to alethi wedding traditions. Some of them made it into the final event some of them did not and this is why I am so happy I can finally share them with you!Ā
So to say that I made some high pitched noises when i stepped into the venue at the ball last December is probably an understatement. Paladin Creative, Dragonsteel and their many helpers did such an impressive job making this immersive ball reality and fun ā especially considering with so little time beforehand.Ā
