"OMG. Mirri killed Daenerys' wanted loved baby! Yes, Mirri was the gang-raped slave of the child's parents, but it's just a baby! Would you kill baby Hitler?!"
Yes.
Yes, I would.
And so would any of you, were you ever in Mirri's place, no matter how much you pretend to be better than her.
You all just can't tolerate that Mirri refused to let Daenerys get away with her "mild" form of slavery.
Mirri refused to be a simpering brainless robotic "happy" slave like Dany's handmaidens after she was defiled and her people genocided for Daenerys' cause.
And that just gets your goat, doesn't it?
Donāt know why but I decided to become a Mirri Maz Durr defender on Twitter where the most vocal Dany Stans are and boy they really donāt like being reminded a slave has a right to rebel against their master (which Mirri didnāt even do) even when that master is Dany
The only "crime" Mirri was guilty of was not giving Dany a comprehensive speech about how this ritual - which Dany was explicitly demanding she do - wasn't going to bring back Drogo 100%. Every single other thing is on Drogo, Dany or Jorah, and that entirely includes what happened to Rhaego.
Oh, and she didn't pretend Dany was a victim in a scenario where an entire city was brutalized and she "magnanimously" took some personal slaves to nominally protect them from rape until the time comes for them to be sold for cash money to fund her reconquest of Westeros.
"I've told the khal he ought to make for Meereen," Ser Jorah said. "They'll pay a better price than he'd get from a slaving caravan. Illyrio writes that they had a plague last year, so the brothels are paying double for healthy young girls, and triple for boysĀ underĀ ten. If enoughĀ childrenĀ survive the journey, the gold will buy us all the ships we need, and hire men to sail them." (AGOT, Daenerys VII)
Dany never addresses this beyond the little band-aid of pointing at random rape victims and going "my property now". They are still walking in the slave column on the way to Meereen, including Mirri. Does she even know how they are treated there?
Her words were a knife through Dany's breast. What had she ever done to make the gods so cruel? She had finally found aĀ safeĀ place, had finally tastedĀ loveĀ and hope. She was finally going home. And now to lose it all ⦠"No," she pleaded. "Save him, and I will free you, I swear it. You must know a way ⦠some magic, some ā¦" (AGOT, Daenerys VIII)
Ask Mirri whether she would like to find a safe place, taste hope, go home.
They need to pretend Mirri is guilty of anything, because otherwise they can't deny that Dany murdered an enslaved woman, her own slave, for no other reason than to exchange her life for the dragons that will replace the army and ships she originally meant to buy with captured free people sold into slavery.
But hey!! She is so anti slavery!
I am queen over a city built on dust and death. Dany had no choice but to deny him. She had declared a blanket pardon for all crimes committed during the sack. Nor would sheĀ punishĀ slaves for rising up against their masters. (ADWD, Daenerys I)
Nah, she'll just burn them alive if it's useful.
(Dany is a tragic character, and one day I will be able to discuss her choices more calmly and in context with her age and her trauma, but that's impossible as long as people pretend that those choices aren't absolutely violently horrific at times.)
This like fucks me up every time. Like, the amount of incompetence it takes to actually say a sentence like this blows my mind.
Book reader only response (donāt know what Sansa did or didnāt do in the show):
1. I donāt ascribe to white women victimhood. Dany being a slaver and a child are not mutually exclusive.
2. The violent acts of the oppressed against their oppressors are always justified. Acts of resistance are not comparable to acts of oppression.
3. Danyās perception of events is irrelevant (we could talk about the abhorrent narrative of the good slaver a la Toni Morrisonās Beloved, but thatās an essay for another day). Mirri believed herself to be Danyās slave because realistically, thatās what she was. Rationalize that all you want, but stop pretending Dany saved anyone in Lhazareen.
1. White women victimhood?? LMFAOOOO. Daenerys is a child bride sold to a marriage and is essentially in sex slavery. It is said that Khals share their wives and Dany is lucky Drogo doesnāt but that is the level of her position. She is a VICTIM.
2. Dany is not Mirriās oppressor. Dany has hardly any power and is unfamiliar with Dothraki practices. When she sees whatās happening she immediately tries to put an end to it. Albeit it is flawed but itās the best she can do in her position. Also Mirri killed a 13 year old abuse victimās unborn child. Let that sink in. That unborn child did not oppress Mirri and that is not a sign of resistance but REVENGE and cruelty. Yāall will accept Sansaās flaws and passiveness in the face of cruelty but when Dany helps if she doesnāt do it in the 100% perfect way, she is still somehow worse then your faves.
3. Dany didnāt really save anyone in Lhazaren and that is addressed in the narrative. People are saying she was never in any position of power to do anymore than she did. She is A CHILD. A pregnant child. Pls stop fr.
It seems that reading comprehension is in order:
1. Dany being a slaver and a child are not mutually exclusive. Once again for those who cannot comprehend, Dany can be a child bride and a slaver.
Additional note: white woman victimhood is a term used seriously. Danyās atrocities would not be so casually overlooked if she werenāt white. Her being a victim doesnāt change that.
2. Sansa was not a part of this narrative. Mirri had no power over Dany (whether she murdered her unborn child is a matter of interpretation). If you think that Mirri intentionally murdered the baby, it doesnāt change the fact that Dany burned her slave at the stake. It doesnāt matter what Dany calls her, Mirri explicitly refers to herself as Danyās slave. Once again: acts of oppression are not comparable to acts of resistance.
Additional note: I donāt know what books youāve read, but at the very very least, Sansa is not a slaver. Again, why is Sansa even brought up right now? This is not a Sansa fan page, this is not even a GOT account, this is a mostly abolitionist account so naturally, itās anti Daenerys.
3. Seeing as I need to spoon feed this information, the point I was trying to make is that Dany thinking herself a hero when she is a villain STARTED in Lhazareen. This theme continues throughout the story, in Astapor, in Yunkai, in Mereen. Itās not that Dany is an imperfect helper, itās that she is a slaver and 100% a villain to the people she is āsavingā.
Jeez, just take your love of slavery masquerading as white saviourism and get off a properly tagged post. You have no right to tell me to stop analyzing media from anti colonial and anti imperialistic perspective.
It's always "take vengeance on your slavers" but when I, MIRRI MAZ DUUR, do it with a fan favorite character---
I think a lot of people forget that dany was also a glorified slave right until the last chapter of AGOT. so the dynamic between dany and mirri isnāt as neat as slaver and enslaved, but rather two slaves with different levels of power
being a āglorifiedā slave is not the same as a slave. dany owned mirri - she is a slaver. she burned her slave alive. pls do not obfuscate this fact to make what dany did seem less severe. they are not two slaves with different ālevels of powerā they are a, yes, a child slaver but nonetheless a slaver & and the slave she owns.
āBetter to come a beggar than a slaver,ā Arstan said. āThere speaks one who has been neither.ā Danyās nostrils flared. āDo you know what it is like to be sold, squire? I do. My brother sold me to Khal Drogo for the promise of a golden crown. Well, Drogo crowned him in gold, though not as he had wished, and I ⦠my sun-and-stars made a queen of me, but if he had been a different man, it might have been much otherwise. Do you think I have forgotten how it felt to be afraid?ā (Daenerys III, ASOS)
I shouldn't have said glorified slave. Dany is explicitly a slave in AGOT. She is sold to Drogo, and she is only freed when he dies. It is something that is central to her character arc going forward. Mirri was never her slave, they were both Drogo's slaves. Dany, as Drogo's khaleesi, had more power in the situation than Mirri did, but Dany was also Drogo's slave, full stop.
I'm not trying to make Dany's actions less severe, she did fully burn a person alive. I'm simply pointing out that the situation isn't 'slaver burns slave as punishment', it is 'two characters within slavery commit trauma-fueled violence against one another'.
Except you really are - maybe unintentionally - trying to make Dany's horrific actions seem less severe by falsely equating her situation to Mirri's. It doesn't really matter that Dany was a bride slave to Drogo, not in her situation with Mirri. Drogo was a fucking vegetable at that point and Dany had all the power over Mirri in that situation. And Dany's entitled ambition was the reason Drogo even raided Mirri's village and took her as a slave. Mirri was Dany's slave. Dany was her slave master. Please stop trying to 'both side' the situation between a slave and their fucking slave master! āļø
It's always "take vengeance on your slavers" but when I, MIRRI MAZ DUUR, do it with a fan favorite character---
I don't even hate Dany. But the outrage from people over the mad queen turn wrt sexism is something. I know most of them barely mustered the same energy about the sexism that existed in all 8 seasons. Or the racism concerns now when they ignored seven seasons of Dany and POC. I wonder if there was similar anger for the many women in color abused and marginalized in stories they watch. Who am I kidding? I know the answer
It honestly drives me mad. Iām not overly critical about fantasy and how they all treat their non white characters (if they even have them), simply because I cannot be fucked and sometimes just want to watch in peace. But even then, Daenerysā storyline and that vile imagery that plagues every scene has always been revolting to me, like truly degrading and humiliating, one of the early things that turned me against her. Itās little different in the books too, despite what people say. These same eternally heartbroken white women that are so horrified now- with the audacity to suddenly start talking about racism and misogyny- spent years creaming themselves at the scenes of her being pawed at by adoring slaves, worshiped by every third brown person that passes by and ruling over a band of uncivilized barbarians, all brought to heel by this awesome conquerer, who invades countries for banter.
Itās why none of this outrage means jack to me. Oh, so now you realized this show is terrible? Now youāre gonna dig up shit on D&D that was public knowledge for years that you happily ignored? Now you want to cry for the characters and actors who were pandered to for eight years straight? Now that the Khaleesi wankfest finally hit pause, everything is awful and nothing makes sense? Lol those people are an absolute joke and it astonishes me that they have the nerve to lecture anyone else on racism or misogyny. This big ass tantrum, trying to make everyone agree it was dismal for their reasons, and yet casuals still lapped it up, including Daenerysā turn as the big bad. You hate to see it.
