for a while now me and my friends have been using a term regarding character writing called Jimmy Misery. Jimmy Misery is the hypothetical subject to the most horror and trauma of any fictional character in existence; if anybody can think of something bad, that happened to Jimmy Misery. if anybody can think of anything good, that never happened to him. he's suffered the most out of anybody ever.
the reason for Jimmy Misery's existence is we were seeing a lot of writers, especially newer/younger writers, giving their characters a comical amount of trauma seemingly just because they thought it made the character more interesting, but then that trauma is never expanded upon or even brought up in the story. it doesnt relate to any arcs, it doesnt mean anything thematically, its just there taking up space. so, as an example, i made up Jimmy Misery as a hyperbole to illustrate that background trauma doesnt make a character interesting by itself. unless theres a story with it, it's just noise.
you will of course note that Jimmy Misery is fucking boring, and there is absolutely no good narrative to be had there despite him being the most traumatised guy ever. i'm of course not saying 'dont give characters trauma', just that trauma by itself is yawn worthy. its a meal of only salt.
if youre writing a character and wanna make them somebody that audiences will connect to, give em stakes, give em an arc, give em motivation and wants that relate thematically to what you want the work to be about. dont just make em a jimmy misery. nobody connects to jimmy misery cause then something good wouldve happened to him
See also, "We're in a drought; conserve water!" Meanwhile, bottled water companies and golf courses for rich folk empty the aquifers.
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
Every time I think I'm starting to understand allo people, somebody says something like "I want that woman to put her cigarette out on me" and I realize I still really don't get it
There're about 64,000 square miles of coral reefs on Earth that could still be resisting climate change by 2050, an area the size of Wiscons
New research used an AI (note that this is a good use of AI to analyze data for research, not a LLM) to analyze over 45,000 recorded observations of coral reefs with the goal of finding locations where reefs were more likely to survive higher ocean temperatures into the future. Based on over 40 criteria, the AI model predicted at least 64,000 square miles of reef would be able to survive rising ocean temperatures into 2050 and beyond. That's about the size of Wisconsin.
Corals in these "coral refuges" had some combination of a faster rate of recovery, more heat-resistant species, and better protection from heat-related damage.
The study authors hope that their research can help guide more efficient allocation of limited coral conservation resources.
Although coral reefs face immense threat from climate change, our knowledge of coral conservation has increased by leaps and bounds in the last 20 years. Only two decades ago we couldn't breed corals in human care, now we have mobile coral labs that can breed thousands of coral in just a week. We can restore reefs faster and more successfully, and there are scientists working on breeding more heat-resistant coral lineages.
While a model is not a guarantee, this is another ray of hope that some coral reefs will naturally survive climate change despite the steep odds.

Thank you kind prescriber this next one will fix me for sure
To be healthy and well-rounded they need some manner of horrible woman.
Correct! The "horrible" part is technically subjective, but some people seem to think any woman with agency and depth is horrible, so it still works
im incredibly conflicted by the phrase ‘the question is not who will let me but who will stop me’ because on one hand its so fucking raw and powerful but on the other hand it’s derived from ayn rand but on yet another hand the first and primary time ive ever seen it was on a picture of a lawnmower flying through the sky which is the perfect level of absurd and nonsensical that would piss ayn rand off

cranberry strawberry lemon limeade
1 64 oz bottle of white cranberry and strawberry juice
1 gallon pitcher
1 lemonade mix that mixes for 2 quarts
1 1/2 limes
Put lemonade mix into pitcher, fill to 50-65% full with water, fill the rest with cranberry juice, cut one lime into fourths, put them in pitcher, cut 1 lime in half, squeeze juice into pitcher, discard half.
It's better if you let it sit but it's ready to go if mixed well.
