Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".

In 38 years of life I have learned 1 thing;

If anyone is ever training you to replace them in a position and tells you 'its an easy job I don't do much' what this means is that you are about to spend six months to a year catching up on all the stuff they didn't do and sorting out the stuff they did poorly.

this is really interesting in how it frames disability/low spoons/etc as not being a series of internal symptoms, but specifically a situation in which daily tasks increase in complexity. for example i used to be able to wash the dishes normally. but now mental and physical issues combine to make that situation have a lot of prequalifications (do I have time, energy, how long can I do it without being sore the next day) that means many more steps are involved in getting that single physical act of washing a dish to be done.

it's not about paying for pt. i think pt should be accessible to anyone and everyone.

however we need a way to track patronage. free pt doesn't give us any insight into how people are using the service, because nobody touches on

queensland's 50c fares are great because it's next to nothing for most people and it still incentivises people to touch on, thus logging the trip and providing valuable insight into our network's characteristics for organisers

it's not whether pt should be self sufficient or whatever (it shouldn't), it's a public service and it should match the needs of the public. it's just one of the best ways to find out what those needs are is to have people pay just enough to make it worth touching on

but also! ridership is not the same as patronage. we still need a way to figure out where people are actually going, and how they're going there, not just how many people are using the system.

also worth noting the distinction between PSOs and AOs. PSOs are from victoria police and aren't there to check your ticket. they still harass minorities (raises hand) but they can't detain you for fare evading. AOs are from the operator and it's their job to harass people into paying fines. they're particularly evil because they're not actually cops and get compensation out of your fine. both are evil, but one is more evil than the other. AOs also probably wouldn't exist in an affordable pt system!

It's also pretty well established that fares are not the main blocker to increasing public transport ridership; frequency and route utility are. It's much more effective to invest money in increasing frequency and developing new routes that go where people want than free fares. Public transport is already, most places, significantly cheaper than owning and using a car. What it needs is to be more convenient as well.

The argument that it's necessary to know who goes from where to where is so hilarious to me. Idk what's in like in other countries but in Germany a lot of people (out of people who commute by public transport almost everyone) have a monthly ticket and there is no way to track via my ticket where I get on or off.

Occupancy is the only metric you need. You don't have any need or right to know where people are traveling to or from. all you need for the routes is '100 people were on the train from a to b, from b to c, there was 25' which is perfectly fine for anything you want to do with that data.

Nah, there's a lot more useful data than that. I've got comrades in the mighty RTBU (Rail Tram and Bus Union) and one of the metrics they were telling me about was unexpected delays, as a measure of service delivery. If you touch on at 8:55 for the 9:00 train that is meant to arrive at your destination at 9:30, but you touch off at 9:45, they know the train was delayed. They can map the delay from other touch ons.

In your example - is there only 25 ridership on b to c because it's not a popular route? Or is it because people don't want to wait 25 minutes for a bus and get someone to pick them up? How many of those 25 were amongst the 100 from a to b? Can we reduce the number of b to c services because ridership is clearly lower?

As has been said, the biggest barrier for most car drivers isn't the cost, it's the convenience. Understanding the flow of people allows better network optimisation, and is more likely to get people out of cars.

what’s important to note and missing from the “headline” tweet is that they simultaneously constructed additional good public transit to the public transit already in the city (bus rapid transit, train stations). Just removing highway alone isn’t going to make traffic better, the bigger part of the story is that they improved public transportation. So many of the items in our daily lives are sew-able. A simple needle and thread changes the way you think. When an item breaks, you no longer think, "I guess I must buy a new one..." Instead, you think, "I guess I must fix it..."
