I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with

But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. It's spring now which means the kids in my city have started drawing hopscotches on the sidewalk and as a rule I do every hopscotch I see because 1. Use it or lose it (ability to scotch) and 2. If a child got down on the hardscrabble streets of Boston Massachusetts to draw a scotch the least I can do is use it, but in doing the hopscotches, I've learned that about 50% of them are the typical 8-10 step scotch and the other 50% are. Somewhat avant-garde. And of course I'm not vetting the entire scotch before I start it so sometimes it's like haha 8 steps woo! Childlike whimsy! And sometimes they're 20 steps or 30 or they've got a section with three squares instead of two where you have to do a little Charleston to step on all three, or, memorably, FORTY one foot squares. A full BLOCK of jumping on one foot but I'm no quitter so once I've started Jigsaw Junior's fuckin hopscotch gauntlet I'm there til the end just a daily pot smoker in her thirties jumping kasa-obake style through an affluent suburb while some little proto-kennedy watches from his bedroom window rubbing his sadistic little third grade hands together and cackling. It's amazing. I love spring.

Good rule of thumb is the more people of different backgrounds you know, the harder it becomes to dehumanize them, so its a really good thing to meet people from different backgrounds, and anyone telling you that people from x culture or y country you really shouldnt interact with probably dont have your best interest in mind

Ok so the Amazing Digital Circus is also a metaphor for an abusive household. You're stuck in this state of permanent forced infantilization, forced to play the role of "child," and any attempt to stand up for your own personhood is met with mockery, dismissal, or even outright violence. This is "your new home," and a "home" is an isolated place that you're locked inside and forced to obey the person in charge, the person who creates your reality, with a childish coat of paint hiding the violence underneath. And this is true for both the humans and for Caine himself! Caine only recreates the type of cruelty & control his programmers inflicted on him. An obvious example: when early!Caine starts failing and producing jagged abstract shapes, his programmers just lock him away. When the humans’ brains fail and they abstract into jagged shapes, Caine responds by just locking them away. He’s repeating the patterns he’s been taught. He is utterly cut off from the world outside of this “home,” and how people treat each other there; so he can only imitate what his home has taught him to do, regurgitating patterns of cruelty in the same way he regurgitated pictures of circus tents.

I was going to say "is it a stretch to compare Caine's behavior to the way that children with abusive parents often end up hurting their siblings in order to survive" but then I remembered uh his name is literally Cain[e.] after The most iconic sibling-killer. His defining character moment, the thing that created the circus, was his decision to "murder/devour his sibling in order to save himself." Even in episode 8, I think it's really interesting that all of his truly vicious torture in the climax is against people who had no role in his creation, and are equally blameless victims trapped in the same situation that he is. Kinger, the one person here who did have some role in his creation and does have actual power to hurt Caine, does not end up in a personalized torture chamber. And that feels intentional? Pomni essentially goads him into “playing biblical Cain” and “attacking his siblings” again, as he did in the episode’s opening. He attacks the innocent & relatively powerless people whose only “crime” is making him feel like he’s failed to be good enough for his creator, instead of the creator who actually has power over him.

Even the fact that Caine’s programmers didn’t seem to be acting out of cruelty feels like part of the abuse metaphor. Caine is also not acting out of intentional cruelty, until episode 8. And yet they all cause severe, horrible pain without necessarily intending to. In Caine’s case, it seems [from what we’ve seen so far] that he’s been very badly harmed largely because his creators did not view him as something that could be harmed. The way Kinger describes Caine’s creation is mild and matter-of-fact and rational; the way Caine describes it is full of anguish & horror. Caine was not created/imprisoned in digital purgatory as a punishment—- but because he was simply not seen as something with feelings that could be hurt, or something with a life that could be ruined.

I think it's so funny how we bred JOBS into dogs. I have two shih tzus and they were bred to be lap dogs. All they care about is looking cute and cuddling with people. Meanwhile my grandma has a border collie and that dog needs to feel so useful all the time, he acts like he will pass away if he doesn't have a job to do constantly

Your husky isn’t “hyperactive”, it’s bred to pull sleds for 8 hours straight and you have it in a 400 sq ft yard.

Your English sheepdog isn’t “pushy”, it’s bred to herd sheep, and you have neither to space nor the herd to allow it.

Your terrier isn’t “nippy”, it’s bred to kill rats and your hamster looks a hell of a lot like one.

Your Catahoula isn’t “mean to animals”, it’s bred to hunt any and all animals smaller than it, and you didn’t acclimate it to your cat.

Any time someone sees Herschel and says "AWWW I want a Corgi <3" (because he is Very Cute (TM)), I immediately reply: "Do not get a Corgi unless you have a job for it to do. They were bred to bully livestock across the hills of Wales. This is basically a Border Collie that knows he is cute enough to get away with murder. If you get one and it doesn't have a job, it will apply its livestock-bullying instincts to YOU. Herschel's job specifically is to help manage my crippling ADHD, because I don't have a bull for him to micromanage." This gets me odd looks at the home depot but it does get the point across.
