Tinashe for the Summer 17 edition of Galore Magazine
My Problem with the Joyride/Nightride era so far
Before I start I mean only love & the best for Tinashe with everything I’m about to say here. I will keep supporting her until the end regardless how this year goes because I know she’s destined for greatness. But since the announcement of Joyride back in November 2015, keep up with this era has been nothing short of stressful. The Company video is great but based on a lot of Twitter commentary the same three main issues keep coming back up that everyone can tell is holding her back: 1. Her team/management 2. Her style/aesthetic 3. Her singles/direction This video should have been out in October/November instead of hoping for Slumber Party to magically smash instead. On top of cancelling the radio ad dates it just seems strange releasing this now over anything else. The video will bring some attention for awhile but I expect another couple weeks of silence after this unless she drops another video later on. She should be performing at Coachella. She should be at as many award shows as possible this year. Perform at local festivals and night clubs to build that urban audience back up. She needs to go on another radio tour with solid dates and information lined up. If she’s going to make the transition to pop she needs to win back her urban fanbase first. When its finally time to drop the album, come with the release date, cover art and a single with the video & radio add dates at once to draw interest back in. Plus she needs to figure out how to get her mixtapes out to a bigger audience. Sure that would take hunting all those old producers down, but having her whole catalog on streaming services would do nothing but help her fanbase grow in the long run. I know there’s a lot of struggles with the label behind the scenes but it just seems everyone involved is at a lost on how to handle her career as far as promo goes. The moves are good but visually she doesn’t stand out too much; her styling never has any punch to it. She really needs someone who’s going to push her looks to the next level because they’re usually nothing memorable. I don’t know if it will take a new color or cut that stands out and to be dressed by fancy designers, but something about her look isn’t connecting with the people and I don’t know what it would take to elevate her looks to main pop girl status. Even if the Company video her moves we’re great but she was dressed up the same as her backup dancers and made them seem more like a group. And I think this has been a general complaint since day one but its time for a new stylist. Trying to go pop too soon was also a big problem. She had potential to really establish an urban fanbase with 2 On but really killed that momentum trying to crossover so quickly. The jump to pop was way too soon as she ignored potential urban hits like How Many Times and Feels Like Vegas in order to chase pop dreams. She had plenty of potential urban that will remain album cuts while the pop efforts aren’t sticking to anyone at all. I understand wanting to crossover, but doing it so early with only the established mixtape fanbase ended up alienating both groups so she appears without direction. It was good to create Nightride as the pre-Joyride album full of cuts that didn’t make the final tracklist, but it further enforces the idea that the era is in limbo and nothing is sticking, especially since half of the mixtape was meant to be on Joyride at various points in time. The hunt for a hit is starting to do more harm than good since Player was a complete misfire that didn’t need Breezy and will be lucky enough to even make it as a Japanese bonus track. Superlove was underappreciated but sonically favored Ciara too much. It would be tragic to have a 3rd lead single but I wouldn’t be surprised at this point. If they plan to drag Nightride out a bit longer, Sacrifices needs to be the next single. Ideally it would be smart for her to send that to radio, make video promote it a bit and end the Nightride side to move on to No Contest as the next Joyride single and prepare to release the album. It’s going to be a long and hard stanning her this year if none of these things change soon but I have hope she’ll figure out how to make the best of it. I just hope she can truly make this a Joyride upon release instead of the trainwreck its been up until now.
