i’m soft for gally in the safe haven teaching thomas to stay.
all thomas knows how to do is to up and leave when his world flips upside down. he’s never had any sort of consistency in his life—even newt, who was a constant from the maze, through the scorch, and in the months after minho’s capture, was ripped away from him.
so he keeps waiting for things to go wrong in the safe haven, too. keeps waiting for someone to take what they’ve built and tear it to shreds.
obviously this terrifies gally (they build fishing boats one night and a part of him is paranoid thomas won’t be there in the morning), so he puts a hammer in thomas’s hand and forces him to build something permanent. a house for one of the scorch kids, someone who’s also never had anything constant. he teaches him to lay down sturdy foundations and support beams and walls that won’t fall, because he is hands on and literal and this is the only way he knows to get his message across.
thomas bitches at first (he’s a terrible builder, always has been), probably assumes this is gally’s weird way of getting back at him. then the kid moves into the first home they’ve ever had, and he sees the look on their face. and he finally gets it. he gets what gally is trying to teach him and he gets why he looks so scared all the time. why he checks on him every morning (“where do you think you’re going, greenie?”) and why it never feels like a reprimand.
that night, he tosses and turns for a while in the temporary cabin he and the remaining gladers are sharing.
and gally wakes up a few hours later to thomas sliding under his covers, muttering “you fucking idiot, of course I’m not going anywhere,” and laying a tentative arm across his side.
(“what the fuck, greenie?”
“shut up and go back to sleep.”)
Gally: *begrudgingly hands Thomas his jacket, as his complaining about being cold annoys him (or so he tells himself)
Minho: why'd you do that? Thought you hated him *eyebrow wiggling ensues*
Gally: there's a fine line between hate and-
Minho: *crows* LOVE
Gally: *deadpan* vague feelings of affection

Also anybody who has an Ed or isn’t eating regularly just know that if you have a problem that’s not the way to handle it. Not eating can make you have hair loss, be tired, and can lead to major health problems. So go eat something for Chuck, drink water for Newt, take a shower for Brenda.
