re: my last reblog: i was reading about rote (picking around the wikipedia page) before i actually started the books to kind of get the vibe and see if it was something i wanted to get into because it’s kind of an undertaking. the page points out that what made it distinct from other fantasy works (i guess, i’m not deep into fantasy) at the time of publication is that fitz is a bastard child, distinctly an outsider in his supposed social group from the start. or even that he didn’t have a social group to begin with. and then his wit sets him apart even more, and his position in the king’s court is so secret he can’t tell anyone anything about his life so he’s just an anomaly altogether. it’s so plain to see that he shies away from being queer because he just can’t bear to be any more different than he already is. he’s clinging so hard to every shred of normalcy because he’s never had any!! so much that he can’t let it go even for his favorite person in the world. and THAT is what makes him so tragic To Me, not just the many ways his life is unfair but that almost all these ways are out of his control. robin hobb a student of SHAKESPEARE for real
