the games are real, the stakes are real, the players themselves are unknowable except for what they carefully want you to know. the narratives are real, but the league knows you care about them, so they amplify them. the graphics next to the player's heads to tell you this is how their season is going, the camera lingering on them as they lean down to tie their shoes or their skates, looking solemn, the commentators tell you this is important, the marketing tells you this is important, in case you didnt know. the stories are already there but theyre also well-crafted. you care about these players. you care about how they perform. not just because you want to see your team win but because you want to see the conclusion of the narrative being built around them.

not everyone is doing sports rpf the way you might be familiar with it in fandom spaces, but sports is always, on some level, rpf. the people are real, but the reason you care about them is because a story is being told about them, through numbers, satistics, win/loss ratios, championships. there is an interest in amplifying the drama and centering the narrative so you care more about what you're seeing while watching the game. and is that not simply rpf...........

okay guys hear me out on this

samira’s mom screws her over majorly by selling the house in new jersey, and a few days after the s2 shift, samira officially knows she’s fucked when her landlord tells her that it’s too late to renew her lease. without knowing what her financial situation will look like in the upcoming months, it’s not exactly easy to find another place.

it’s baran who finds her at the staff lockers, gasping for breath that won’t come, scratching at her collarbone like the superficial wounds will allow air to seep into her lungs. she’s quick to make sure no one else is around (for samira’s sake, considering the spectacle that was made of her last public panic attack) and then help samira through it. it takes a while but, eventually, she’s calm enough to start apologizing and insisting she’s fine to go back to work. baran tells her that she needs to go home and rest, and samira lets it slip that she doesn’t have a home.

it breaks baran’s heart to see someone as persistent as samira look so resigned. it’s probably (definitely) a bad idea, and a violation of professional boundaries, and wholly unethical— but baran offers samira a place to stay until she can sort out a more permanent living arrangement and find a fellowship. samira is very unsure, hates the thought of putting someone out (and of being pitied) but baran proves that she can also be very persistent. samira accepts the offer with the assurance that it’ll only be for a few weeks, a month at most.

only, samira finding somewhere else to be that isn’t right at baran’s side isn’t a part of baran’s plan.

samira slipped out of her reach once before when she transferred from the VA they’d worked at together, and baran has regretted letting her go ever since. she’s not about to make the same mistake twice.
