Lance has always found home in Blue. He sees her as a comfort, as an extension of earth — that’s clear with the heartbreak he felt when lost her. From what i can glean of his family, Lance has always played a supporting role — the role of the leg. A pillar, yes, but a quiet pillar. A background pillar, of sorts.

Lance has never really been in a position of leadership. (excluding his brief time in the garrison as a fighter pilot, wherein he was granted that position of leadership but begrudgingly, and was specifically targeted so he could not thrive in that position), but rather, in a position where he is someone to lean on rather than someone who is meant to act.

When he is thrown into the position of the Red paladin, he is ripped from his home for a second time. No longer is a static support — now he is meant to be dynamic. It’s a strange position for him — because he is taking the mantle that Keith left behind, you’d assume that he is staying in Keith’s shadow. But that wasn't the case.

Keith’s leadership is so vastly different from Shiro’s. So much so, that Lance is not meant to take the supporting role that Keith played to Shiro, the sword, but rather lance is expected to lead with Keith — he’s the right hand. He’s not a tool, but the wielder of the tool. He is Keith’s strength and stability. He is the fire. He is a decision maker. He is a planner.

He is nothing like he was before.

Before he was expected to be adaptable, but ritualistic; like water. He had a direct path intended for himself that he did everything he could to follow. He was comfortable — mostly — in his position on the team and his role in the family. He was important, but not so important that people were relying directly on his input.

But after he takes up the role of Keith’s Red Paladin? His home burns to the ground, and rains hellfire upon him. he can never go back to the role he played before. When he accepted the position as Keith’s right hand man, he accepted the position of being attached to Keith, as a leader, and because their dynamic is what it is, lance is expected to be, for lack of a better expression, the brains of the operation. As much as he can very much remain a tease and the one who brings light to the situation, he is also expected to guide decisions and discussions going forward. He is necessary to help hone Keith’s impulsivity and fire — and you can’t help fire with water. That will put it out. You must help fire with more fire.

When lance accepts the heavy responsibility of the Red Paladin, when he puts on the red armor, he fully and completely loses his home and everything he’s used to. But that doesn’t mean he’s homeless — it just means he has a new home to build, and a new role to fill. And knowing lance? He will do it with dedication, tenacity, and love.
