Very often we teach kids and teens to “try to understand what the person is going through” or “well they have home issues” when talking about bullying.

Wee need to stop that. Stop asking kids to humanize their harrassers. Stop teaching kids who bully that its okay to make their emotional issues someone elses problem. Other kids arent their coping mechanisms, abuse shouldnt be their coping mechanism. Get those kids help but dont expect victims to be the ones to help them or understand what theyre going through.

This. Understanding why someone is the way they are is, in itself, a good thing. But people, and kids in particular, are not responsible for ‘fixing’ another person, let alone some chucklefuck that is abusing them in the first place. Knowing that Jimmothy’s parents are abusive assholes is all well and good, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s abusive too. If you make the conscious decision to involve yourself with them and try to make them better, that’s all on you. But you should never force that role on someone else, especially a child, and if you do you probably shouldn’t be in any sort of leadership or care position.

If you know the bully’s parents are abusive you get the cops and social workers on their ass. Don’t blame the victims.
