hc that jason eats fucking whatever. just anything edible. because that's a survival skill lupa taught him & that he had to follow on quests
I said I was done with my Jason Grace bullshit but god is it unfair that he didn't get to the main character of his series. THE SHIP IS LITERALLY CALLED THE ARGO II. NAMED AFTER THE SHIP THAT THE ORIGINAL JASON CAPTAINED. AND YET YOU'VE GIVING ME A SIDE CHARACTER WITH AN AFFINITY FOR BRICKS
I miss drawing this dude
jason grace as a queer allegory in the sense that he comes from an incredibly straitlaced, strict community who frown upon certain kinds of people they consider deviants, who he meets and wants to be part of.
jason grace as a queer allegory in the sense that he does his best to fit in and agonises over whether he can ever keep his original community happy even as he wants to be part of a new community, even though it would be the "deviants".
jason grace as a queer allegory in the sense that his choice is an incredibly personal and difficult one, because he'd be turning his back on all he's ever known to become one of those he spent his life likely not considering positively as a result of what community he grew up in.
(via @i-put-the-hyper-in-hyperfixated)
something something jason never truly got to be part of either community. not before and certainly not after he died, when he was buried amongst his original kin. he had to be gone on searches for leo and his life with piper until even that was stripped away from him, to some extent through godly intervention.
jason being alone. jason being different. he can't be part of either community.

Reading Recommendation 15: At First Sight
Another one from the read-and-unbookmarked backlog: this delightful little gem that stumbled into my feed courtesy of a reblog by @imminentchaos:
At First Sight by @queenjunothegreat (PJO, 5.1k words, Rated G)
āPiper, Iām about ninety-four point six three percent sure I am going to get my shit wrecked tomorrow,ā Leo announced, collapsing onto the bench across the table from her. Piper glanced up from where sheād been painstakingly painting Reynaās nails with a purple Sharpie, eyebrows arched and grin wide. āKinky.ā āI do not mean in a fun, sexy way, I mean I have royally fucked myself completely over,ā Leo groaned, hiding his face in his hands. āLike I am way way up shit creek and I sold my paddles to a pair of beavers for NFTs about ten miles back. Jason basically cornered me after gym and flat out told me when and where to get my ass kicked,ā Leo reported. āHe practically had me pinned to the lockers and told me under no uncertain terms that he wanted me to show up at Rossiās tomorrow at 5:30.ā āI like Rossiās,ā Reyna said. āThe pizza is good.ā Piper ignored her. āDude, you are so fucked.ā *** Jason Grace is the new kid in town, and Leo is helplessly, hopelessly obsessed with him, despite the fact that the dude gives off every STAY BACK! signal in the book. This is fine, until it isn't, and suddenly Leo finds himself scheduling his execution.
The writing is just delicious. You know how they tell writers to avoid analogies because it's cheap and uncreative? This is the exception to the rule. If analogies are cheap, then this is Gucci-level analogies. This prose ain't purple, it's lavender, which is the same thing but luxurious and out of your budget. I evidently suck at good metaphors, unlike Queen Juno.
It's writing you just want to take a big bite out of is what I'm saying.
It's got it all: Valgrace (one of the pairings of all time if ever I've seen one, and underrepped as hell), comedy, Piper, pizza, adorable Valdez family moments ā look I can keep hyping this up for the rest of today but it's gonna be quicker to just read it.
It's good, I promise.
i know we like to create angsty little headcanons about jason being put through military camp at age 4 and how he suffered at camp jupiter but guys, let's be real. jason was dropped off at cj at like what? 3/4? and this is camp made out of teenagers and adults? have you guys ever seen anybody around a toddler? there is no way in hell they were punting that kid onto the field and putting a sword in his hand and going, "okay, now run laps with everyone else". they were babying that boy like there was no tomorrow. within like a week of jason being dropped off, the babysitting sheet has been filled for the next 5 years. they are bringing that boy everywhere. to the senate meetings, to the mess hall, the coliseum, the amphitheater, the training field where they put up a special toddler area so jace wouldn't wander off somehwere dangerous. they're tryna indoctrinate that boy into becoming a fan of their specific new rome chariot team (go bellona blitzes!). they're signing him up for school and then posting his report card for the entire legion to see. jason comes to camp jupiter and amazon suddenly gets an order for 300 child rearing books. the first time jason gets hurt training, the legion has to be put on wartime lockdowns because everyone is losing their goddamned minds.
Baby jason meeting Leo during a quest
jason who considered himself abandoned. not by his mother -- at least, not only her -- but by everyone. his patron goddess, who erased all his memories. his sister, who doesn't stay long enough to truly know him. his camp, his family, who never really searched for him. his girlfriend, who broke up with him and they moved apart. his best friend, who "died" and never got to meet him after he returned.
and then he never got to experience its reverse, with anyone coming back to him.
DAY FOURTEEN JASOBRUARY!!!
I will never get over Jason Grace having to learn that his mother is dead. What do you mean the boy whoās life is shaped by his mothers broken promise, who always wanted to be part of a family has to be told out his mum is dead.
valgrace fic!!!
Summary:
Jason Grace was dead. Apollo knew this. Nico knew this. Everyone who knew Jason knew this. Leo supposes he knew this too. His best friend, his person⦠his boyfriend was dead. He will live out the rest of days regretting his fear that kept him from Jason for so long. They had wasted so much time⦠āāā 1490 miles away from Long Island a boy washed ashore in Houston Texas with a near fatal chest wound. He couldnāt remember anything what had happened to him, why he was here, or even his name. And for some reason this lapse in memory felt oddly familiar. āāā Or: everyone thinks Jason died that day with Apollo. But did he? ( plus some valgrace because I love them)
I donāt remember (again!)

Psychosocial Development theory and Jason Grace
Jasonās psychosocial development can actually be viewed quite clearly through the lens of Erik Eriksonās psychosocial theory. Being in the adolescent age range, Jason would be in the āidentity vs. Role Confusionā stage of Eriksonās theory. In this stage, many individuals begin to ask questions about who they are as a person and who they are to others; examining questions about values, beliefs, and sense of self. For example, When Jason is first introduced, he seems to have conflicting feelings and opinions on his role as a model and leader to others, a role he feels is imposed due to his identity as a son of Zeus. It's stated, ā..heād been dealing with that for a long timeāpeople looking at him in awe just because he was the son of Zeus, treating him special, but it didnāt have anything to do with him.ā (Riordan, 2010, p.77). It also states, āFrom the moment heād arrived at Camp Jupiter, the Roman demigods had treated him like a prince in waiting. Despite his attempts to alter his destiny ā joining the worst cohort, trying to change the camp traditions, taking the least glamorous missions and befriending the least popular kids ā he had been made praetor anyway. As a son of Jupiter, his future had been assuredā (Riordan, 2014, p. 39).
As Jason develops, he begins to question this expectation others have placed on him. He states, āBeing in this crew of sevenā¦Iām not sure what to do. Iām not used to being one of so many, well, equals. I feel like Iām failingā (Riordan, 2012, p. 222). This period of uncertainty reflects the exploration central to Eriksonās identity versus role confusion stage. Eventually, this questioning develops into Jason actively recognizing that he no longer wishes to have this role; āIf he survived this war with Gaia and returned to Camp Jupiter as a praetor, could he change things for the better? That was his duty. So why did the idea fill him with dread?ā (Riordan, 2013, p.162).
He finds a way to intentionally relinquish this role by the end of the series, forfeiting his leadership to Frank in favor of finding his own path forward; āāFrank Zhang! I, Jason Grace, praetor of the Twelfth Legion Fulminata, give you my final order: I resign my post and give you emergency field promotion to praetor, with the full powers of that rank.āā(Riordan, 2013, p.306). This allows him to confidently move towards identity resolution and purpose, rejecting external expectations in favor of a role more aligned with his values, rather than experience identity diffusion or prolonged identity confusion.
