You know what I still find hilarious? In HoO, in BoO when Solangelo have their first back and forth and Nico chews Will out for not being stealthy enough cause of his blonde hair.

But, unless I missed a pivotal changing scene, Nico is still wearing that loud ass Hawaiian shirt from Puerto Rico.

It’s funny enough that he’s wearing it in the big fight at the end, and that he’s sneaking up on the Romans in it, that he has to intimidate the Romans and Octavian while wearing it - and awesome that it WORKS. They don’t even blink at the shirt cause he’s scary. I swear reading all those scenes focusing on the fact that Nico is in that shirt makes it so much more fun.

No wonder Will isn’t taking his shit though. No wonder he’s teasing him and not at all intimidated by this tiny skinny grumpy little boy in a loud ass Hawaiian shirt.

A trope that gets to me: 'guard dog' character and their partner who are both fully aware of it and honestly don't care/kind of like it. Someone says "call your guard dog off" and their partner does call them off. That person, their 'guard dog', is someone who is unreservedly, irrefutably loyal to them. Someone undoubtedly dangerous who is willing to kill, to maim, to obey, simply because of their love for one another. There's no manipulation involved— it is loyalty, brutal, dogged loyalty. And it goes both ways.

it’s no question that Percy looks like Poseidon but can you imagine being Thalia Grace spending years and years remembering your brother as the teeny tiny toddler he was when he died only to have him find you a decade and a half later and when you look at him you don’t see your brother you see your father. stern and cold and severe. and you see your mother. beautiful and proud and burdened.

you look at your brother and instead of seeing the rosy, chubby cheeks of a kid who adored you, you see remnants of the parents who disappointed you.

i just saw a post on reddit titled "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" and it was about OP clicking off a fic because they don't like the direction it's going in. slightly different context but can we all be more like this reddit OP. i think "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" should be the new "don't like don't read." dead doves may give you diarrhea but don't make that everyone else's problem.

Rereading the first couple chapters of Mark of Athena is so sad in regards to Percy and Jason and their relationship, because this very first interaction laid actually such a good groundwork for what could have been an easygoing, fun friendship between them.

Like, the concept of the roman son of Jupiter and the greek son of Poseidon getting along perfectly fine and just clicking without much tension is so much more fun and in character for Jason and Percy than the weird ass power rivarly dynamic Rick wrote for them only a couple pages later.

important addition i forgot that not everyone might know. similar to how ao3 bookmarks work, you can also link to non-ao3 fanworks using this format. so, for instance, if theres some fanart on tumblr that inspired you to write the fic? you can link that fanart to your fic!

Anyway, my biggest tip for getting into fandom is to engage. Send asks. Share your creations. Do the tag game even if you haven’t been tagged. Talk to people on their posts. Ask for people to follow who like x things. All difficult things for the socially anxious, I know, but it gets better with practice, I swear 🫶

I am not a huge fan of the sci-fi trope of humans as boring or special, which can be troublesome sometimes. Mostly I’d like if there was more of a pendulum effect instead of aliens being flabbergasted by us all the time or being condescending.

Sure, it’s fun when a tasty human snack is something very poisonous to aliens, but I wanna take that gag about species differences further! Rather than “har har, the Nonsensoleans can’t eat spicy peppers like us,” and leave it at that, show me the Nonsensoleans being aghast at the things humans eat willingly, but also the humans who found that amusing doing a double take when the Nonsensoleans find the ship’s extremely toxic cleaning supplies, remark on humans keeping “the spices” in weird places, and having a good old fashioned Nonsensolean barbecue, which is so poisonous smelling it is dangerous.

Aliens that are surprised and impressed by the temperature differences humans not only can withstand but willingly subject themselves to, but find subjecting themselves to levels of sensory deprivation humans would consider torture a useful mental exercise.

The “your species is so weird (admiring, slightly worried)” is so much better when it cuts every which way. Galactic community is full of freaks and nobody is 100% sure what everyone else can do.
