The Myth Of Destiny
flash fiction / 1 887 words
original / fantasy
In the desolate land of ire sands, a storm was born - a raging wind to sweep the land, to rinse and wash it with lashing rains. She has accepted this path, there, standing in the very eye of the storm - washed with blood, sweat and tears.
āI, Destiny the Immovable, swear on this blade to slay the dark lord that took my brotherā her voice carried across the lands by the wind, a prophecy and a conviction to uphold.
The sand gave way underneath her heavy step and split underneath the heavy sword she dragged behind. The wind weaved through her silver hair and sailed her blood-red cape, the gale wailed and whistled, an ode only heard by the sands and the skies. Destiny shielded her face from the blazing sun, squinting into the far open lands. A hazy silhouette rose from behind the rolling dunes - a castle of silver and onyx, polished forms spiking out of the horizon line like a blade jammed into a giantās flesh, an impossibly bright flash reflecting from itās edge across the lands, burning into the eye of any creature that dares gaze upon it. Such was the lair of the dark lord, the man that rained terror upon the lands, setting fields ablaze, ravaging villages and taking these most beloved to never be seen by the light of day again.
Destiny lifted her sword, resting it on her iron and leather clad shoulder. A tension passed through her - from her pushed together eyebrows to her calves, a powerful impulse bending the very ground beneath her, as she dashed forward, an unstoppable storm.
The shadows extended, slithered through the charred debris, creatures lurking just out of sight, their striped bodies shifting and moving with the thin shadows. Among them, riders in silver, a forest of sharp helms ripping into the pale skies.
āDestiny! Destiny! Destiny! The savage from lands beneathā chants and hisses rung across the ruined landscape, as the armored warrior pursued her goal, sword in hand.
Sharp call akin a screech of a fallen boar tore through the battle ground and the creature mounted knights circled the lone fighter.
āKnights of Graal! You were once honorable men, bending to your knees before the common folk to serve and protect - your deadly spears surrounded the village of Silver Fish like the spikes of an urchin - whence and for what have you forsaken your ideals?ā exclaimed Destiny āWhat lead you to tear into the land and skies in the name of the horrible dark lord?ā
āDestiny is a fool, a fool!ā replied the spear bearers āThe true prophecy of these lands - Silver Fish was to become the heart of the new heroās quest - we are to protect the hero! You went against your fate, Destiny! It is your fault our village is in ruin beneath the foot of the heroās castle!ā Wails and cries filled the air, the forms of the knight dissolving into a mass that shined and reflected all that was in this land.
āFate does not concern usā Destiny spoke, pointing her sword high into the air āFuture can not exist until the present is lived, and what present I carve, such will be the future, and such will be written into the past!ā
She swung her sword, the shadow and the light bending by her very might, a spark cutting through the grieving mass.
āForgive me, Knights of Graal. May your ideals live on in these your managed to protect before your untimely fallā the voice of Destiny flew with the wind as the last silver slivers of the former Knights dissipated into the pure yellow light.
The formidable wall of mirror steel and obsidian rose high before the silver-haired woman, the reflecting light blinding her and the scorching hot ground burning her feet. Destiny squinted through the blinding light, staggering forward as much as she could. There was no way around, only up, oh how Destinyās heart desired to grow a pair of wings - yet her determination alone held no such power. She fell to her knees, sweat drops from her tired muscles evaporated the moment they hit the ground. She gazed up once more, onto the infinite heights of the dark lordās castle.
She took a swing from her flask to calm her burning throat, warm water dripping down her face and onto the ground. Suddenly, the earth itself moved - a creature awoken form itās slumber opened itās wings, a storm of dust lifting around Destiny as she held onto the creatureās back.
āThank you human, your blessive waters have saved me from drying upā spoke the creature, itās triangular wings cutting through the air
āGreat beast!ā Destiny exclaimed in surprise āIf I am to pour more water upon your head, will you take me over the wall on your back?ā
āWhy must you go over the wall, human?ā the beast asked.
āThere is one of my kin trapped on the other side, I must come to rescue him!ā
āThe drive of a human to protect their own was what made your kind so formidable against us beastsā the creature remarked wisely āIt is a drive same as that of a beastās to protect their young but stronger, unstoppable. What am I to protest another beingās nature? Very well, human. I shall carry you there, and perhaps await your return, as long as you bring waterā
And so, Destiny held on tightly to the back of the soaring beast, wind that accompanied her step swiftly caught in the mighty wings of the creature with mirror-white back and night sky black belly. It leaped over the first, and the second, and the third razor sharp wall, itās long tail weaving down as it landed into the rare shade beneath a formidable ledge.
It was time to rest, to water the creature henceforth it shall prosper, as Destinyās journey continues.
A monumental gate of obsidian darkness cracks open, a mighty swing to unleash rays of light and heat into the winter cold halls. Destinyās oath burned bright, sword heavy in her hand. The wind bellowed in the twisted arches above, triumphing her arrival. An odd stillness enveloped all of this mighty hall, from the marble floor to the endless dark ceilings - Destinyās breath grew shorter and armor heavier as she stormed forth to the heart of the castle. The hall twisted and turned, the walls boiling into visceral bubbles and loops, melting down, like candles that burned bright a millennium ago.
The silver-haired warriorās pursuit has come to halt, as the long melting hall at last split open into what seemed like the deepest cave underneath the earth, where scorching heat from below and freezing cold from above could not come to a warm agreement in the center - instead writhing in the midst, freezing and burning all at once from every direction.
Destiny trudged through the endless thin pillars spiking from the earth like a forest of dying trees, as she tried to focus her gaze, she felt a running stream under her feet, a trickle of obsidian black liquid running through the twists and ridges of the wretched ground. With no moment of hesitation, Destiny followed, the trickle becoming a creek and soon pouring into a lake of foul stench. In a blink, a burst of cold blue flame from above poured light upon the surface, Destiny frozen in place before the sight brought out of the darkness.
The pillars of black bile frozen in place twisted and melted together, a wall of vile knots and thorns. It circled and twisted around, the darkness could not dare to step into the pillar of blue light, yet it as well would not let it break the wretched darkness of this den. A small figure was the center of this light, it was a man with hair as silver as the light of the moon. He laid curled up in the center of the cage of darkness, his body wounded yet his magic still as strong, his enchanted light burned and boiled at the edges of the enclosing darkness.
āBrother!ā Destiny cried out
The man lifted his head, his beautiful gray eyes widened in surprise. He stood and stepped forth, the darkness melting away as he approached his sister.
āA child of the tides will stop at nothing to protect itās kin, ey?ā He said quietly.
āAs if you wouldnāt do the same, Mythā Destiny answered. She glanced at the crimson stain on Mythās vest, seeping from underneath his hands clutched tightly over his side āA mage that can not heal himself has no business throwing himself into the clutches of a dark lordā
āYour words wound me more than a swordā He smiled bitterly āAs if you wouldnāt do the same, sisterā
Before she could answer, a rumble filled the halls, a great power shattered the pillars, the shards melting into a million spikes. Destiny unsheathed her sword, as a great power descended upon them. It was spikes upon spikes, a form neither man nor beast, it stood upon itās land with a wide grin.
āLord Hexionā Destiny growled through her teeth.
āWhat took you so long, Destinyā Hexion mocked āI was starting to think your precious little brother would perish before you decide to arriveā
Destiny swung her sword at the dark lord, shards of spikes crashed into the ground, yet the formless man stood unharmed, brushing rubble off-f what was probably his shoulder.
āTaking on a lord in his domain is a mission for morons and fools, which are you?ā
āPerhaps a fool I am,ā Destiny answered, her sword on guard āBravery often comes hand in hand with foolishnessā
She swung her sword again, and in that moment a flash of light beamed behind the dark lord. He glanced back in horror, the wounded mage with silver hair stood firm amongst the spikes, a shard of darkness writhed and twitched in his hand, magic light seeping from it, as it became a conduit for a spell.
āCease this at once!ā Hexion growled āYour foolish spell will bury all of us!ā
āSo shall it beā Destiny and Myth said as one, before the blue flame irrupted from Mythās hand, it devoured darkness in an instant, spikes and knots melted away and ran down as clear water. The walls crumbled and came down, the twisted arches dripping and sizzling into the burning ground.
The flying beast soared high above the crumbling castle.
āIn the name of stars! She did it!ā It cried out in surprise. The beast waved between the melting bridges an toppling towers, down and down to the bright flames licking the falling gate. The beast swooped through the burning hall, until it saw a pair of humans running through the flame. It dove down, taking the pair upon its back.
āI believed in you, Destiny,ā The beast exclaimed āAnd I am glad I did, to be here just in time to rescue you twoā
āWe are truly gratefulā Myth said, brushing his slightly burned hair away from his smiling face.
āHow did you do it, Destiny? How did you slay the dark lord?ā The beast asked.
āI trusted in my compatriot, in a myth that defies fateā she answered, her head held high as they flew far from the remnants of the dark empire.
A Circle Of Faun
flash fiction / 40m one sitting / 466 words / no editing original / fantasy
It was naught but a trudge. Turns came to him on a whim, much as the soil which churned under his feet, leaving distorted, sagging imprints. Caught in the manās worn armor were hundreds of dead leaves and remnants of spiderwebs. The mud gave under him, a slow trudge turned into a slide and then tumble which was only halted by a creek at the end of the slope. The man gazed upon himself in the disturbed reflection, without giving any thought to plucking the brown and red foliage from his scraggly beard. āYouāve come againā a soft voice called out with a sense of amusement. āIndeed,ā the man answered āAnd I will come once moreā āI am awareā the voice answered āTo expect otherwise would be foolishā The man in armor stood, his piercing gaze bore into the aware one, whom stood a distance away, a vessel of water resting on his hip. The water boy smiled at him. āFool must you have been, thenā the bearded man said. āI wonāt deny itā āPerhaps one day you shall learn to hold a conversation. Alas it is not todayā The bearded man turned, the water current curved against his short legs. He saw the way ahead. A desolate form lingered in the patchy opening between the trees, impossibly tall towers which disappeared into the clouds above. The boy followed his gaze. āWhat if I go there too?ā he asked. āYou will notā the man answered. āBut why?ā The bearded man nodded at the water vessel on the boyās hip. The boy understood. He frowned, and left the man be, disappearing in the foliage downstream.
The towers grew closer. Impossibly high in the distance, here they were no longer towers, but infinite walls the width or height of which could not be seen. Stairs weaved up and down and across, a vertical maze of gigantic proportion. Yet, the man knew where to go. It was neither up nor down, all he knew was to walk forward. He passed through the stone gate, below infinite pillars and the hunched grotesques, above seas of gold and below wells of stars. At last, a vessel stood before him. He lifted it from itās stand and placed it on his hip.
He gazed upon himself in the pristine silver reflection, paying no mind to brush his scraggly beard as it had not yet grown. The boy in armor passed under a waterfall, its cold water quickly filled the vessel on his hip. Above the creeks and under the vines, his path created as he passed, turns made on a whim. At last, a creek appeared before him. At the same time, a loud splash. āYouāve come againā the boy called out. āIndeed,ā the man answered āAnd you have come as wellā

Itās funny how science fiction universes so often treat humans as a boring, default everyman species or even the weakest and dumbest.
I want to see a sci fi universe where weāre actually considered one of the more hideous and terrifying species.
How do we know our saliva and skin oils wouldnāt be ultra-corrosive to most other sapient races? What if we actually have the strongest vocal chords and can paralyze or kill the inhabitants of other worlds just by screaming at them? What if most sentient life in the universe turns out to be vegetable-like and lives in fear of us rare āanimalā races who can move so quickly and chew shit up with our teeth?
Like that old story ātheyāre made of meat,ā only weāre scarier.
HOLY SHIT THEY EAT CAPSAICIN FOR FUN
YOU GUYS I HEARD A HUMAN ONCE ATE AN AIRPLANE.
A HUMAN CAN KEEP FIGHTING FOR HOURS EVEN AFTER YOU SHOOT IT
humans are a proud warrior race with a pantheon of bloody gods: Ram-Bo, Schwarzenegger, etc.
REMOVING A LIMB WILL NOT FATALLY INCAPACITATE HUMANS: ALWAYS DESTROY THE HEAD.
WARNING: HUMANS CAN DETECT YOU EVEN AT NIGHT BY TRACKING VIBRATIONS THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE
WARNING: HUMANS CAN REPRODUCE AT A RATE OF 1 PER SPACEYEAR. DESTROY INFESTATIONS IMMEDIATELY
THE HUMAN MOUTH HAS OVER THIRTY OUTCROPS OF BONE AND POWERFUL JAW MUSCLES.
HUMAN BITES CAN BE FATALLY INFECTIOUS EVEN TO OTHER HUMANS
WARNING: HUMANS CAN AND WILL USE IMPROVISED WEAPONS. SEE CLASSIFIED DATA LABELED J. CHAN.
HUMANS CAN PROJECT BIOWEAPONS FROM ALMOST EVERY ORIFICE ON THEIR BODY. DO NOT INHALE
OH GOD THE HUMANS FIGURED OUT DOOR HANDLES OH GOD OH GOD
More seriously, humans do have a number of advantages even among Terrestrial life. Our endurance, shock resistance, and ability to recover from injury is absurdly high compared to almost any other animal. We often use the phrase āhealthy as a horseā to connote heartiness - but compared to a human, a horse is as fragile as spun glass. Thereās mounting evidence that our primitive ancestors would hunt large prey simply by following it at a walking pace, without sleep or rest, until it died of exhaustion; itās called pursuit predation. Basically, weāre the Terminator.
(The only other animal that can sort of keep up with us? Dogs. Thatās why we use them for hunting. And even then, itās only āsort ofā.)
Now extrapolate that to a galaxy in which most sapient life did not evolve from hyper-specialised pursuit predators:
Our strength and speed is nothing to write home about, but we donāt need to overpower or outrun you. We just need to outlast you - and by any other speciesā standards, we just plain donāt get tired.
Where a simple broken leg will cause most species to go into shock and die, we can recover from virtually any injury thatās not immediately fatal. Even traumatic dismemberment isnāt necessarily a career-ending injury for a human.
We heal from injuries with extreme rapidity, recovering in weeks from wounds that would take others months or years to heal. The results arenāt pretty - humans have hyperactive scar tissue, among our other survival-oriented traits - but theyāre highly functional.
Speaking of scarring, look at our medical science. We developed surgery centuries before developing even the most rudimentary anesthetics or life support. In extermis, humans have been known to perform surgery on themselves - and survive. Thanks to our extreme heartiness, we regard as routine medical procedures what most other species would regard as inventive forms of murder. We even perform radical surgery on ourselves for purely cosmetic reasons.
In essence, weād be Space Orcs.
I do hope you realize Iām going to be picking up this stuff and running with it right?Ā
Our jaws have too many TEETH in them, so we developed a way to WELD METAL TO OUR TEETH and FORCE THE BONES IN OUR JAW to restructure over the course of years to fit them back into shape, and then we continue to wear metal in out mouths to keep them in place.Ā
We formed cohabitative relationships with tiny mammals and insects we keep at bay from bothering us by death, often using little analouge traps.Ā
And by god, we will eat anything.Ā
We use borderline toxic peppers to season our food.Ā
We expose ourselves to potentially lethal solar radiation in the pursuit of darkening our skin.Ā
We risk hearing loss for the opportunity to see our favorite musicians live.Ā
We have a game where two people get into an enclosed area and hit each other until time runs out/one of them pass out
We willingly jump out of planes with only a flimsy piece of cloth to prevent us from splattering against the ground.Ā
Our response to natural disasters is to just rebuild our buildings in the exact same places.Ā
We climb mountains and risk freezing to death for bragging rights
We invented dogs. We took our one time predators and completely domesticated them.Ā
On a planet full of lions, tigers and bears, we managed to advance further and faster than any other species on the planet.Ā
Klingons and Krogan and Orcs aināt got shit on us
We drink ethanol (in concentrations high enough to be used as an effective as microbicide or a solvent!) for the express purpose of achieving blood toxicity and disrupting normal brain function⦠AS A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY!
On the same subject, we also deliberately incinerate assorted substances and then inhale the particulate-heavy smoke and vapor resulting for the same effect. EVEN IN THE FACE OF SAID SUBSTANCES BEING CARCINOGENIC, BECAUSE WE JUST DONāT GIVE A FUCK.
Humans do not have biological castes. Kill their commander and another will take its place. Soldiers left alone on a planet will start farming and manufacturing to survive. Farmers and manufacturers will take up arms and kill you if pressed. Just because two humans look different doesnāt mean they cannot do each otherās jobs.
Breeding does not kill them. A single human can mate dozens or hundreds of times in a lifetime. They often do so as recreation. Xenobiology team six believes they do not have a mating season but this is too strange to be true.
Their appendages are not designed for hitting, so they developed special training to make them very good at hitting anyhow.Ā
The proteins making up their bodies are toxic and cause prion disease. Do not touch anything humans have touched. Do not consume earth foods. Fire does not adequately remove this contamination.
Humans perceive sixteen times the colors we do. Do not hide in bushes or vines from humans. They can distinguish your pelt from the foliage with ease.
We tried venting waste gas into the tunnels to kill the humans when they attacked. Turns out they breathe it.Ā
Everything on their planet came from a single biological strain. They developed comprehensive genetics BEFORE they developed space travel.Ā
They lack radio receptors and cannot be brought into compliance with right-thought simply by broadcasting to them. Even after we learned how to translate it into sound-waves one of their hatchlings drove the Great Authority mad by responding to every demand with a single question: āWhy?āĀ
I remember in a similar post they talked about how our arms are specialised for throwing things but also our wrists allow us to do things that many animals canāt
There is a law in one area of Canada/america that you have to have door knobs because leaver door handles can be manipulated by animals (bears being the issue) and only humans can achieve the rotation necessary for opening the door
So our dexterity could be a point of āoh shit what the fuckā
And we could prevent aliens from entering spaces not with advanced locks or bio-scans but a simple round door knob
I am such a huge horse nerd and I apologize. :( But Iām really tired of seeing girths that are halfway down a horseās stomach. This may not be interesting to anyone who is not me, but I like to draw fancy saddles and ridiculously long shanks on bits. Also, horses are the only animal I can draw, so I take advantage of that.
I hope this helps some frustrated non-horsey artists in at least some small way. Remember, when in doubt, add some buckles and some rings. :)
@horsefigureoftheday hereās a cheat sheet on horse tack.
THANK YOU
my favorite video of all time ever
I've always been a bit unsatisfied with how Adventure Time dropped Finn's desperation to find other humans. Like, yeah I know they sort of brought it up again with Islands, but here's the thing: you're telling me that Finn-- the boy who got that excited about Susan maybe being human-- wouldn't go nuts over Betty's introduction to Ooo?????
I think a more satisfying arc for both Finn and Betty would've been Finn seeking her out to ask all these questions about Human Things he's never been able to ask anyone before (especially since this takes place after his and Flame Princess' breakup)!! And he would want to help her in her quest to bring Simon back-- at least, until he starts becoming torn between the morality of it and his selfish desire to be around more humans.
uuUUAUGHGHH just imagine how fabulous the conflict would've been š¤š¤
Sometimes having a reputation for being smart beats actually being smart.
I once beat my schoolās chess champion in a game because he spent the entire match desperately trying to work out my strategy because I was āsmartā and therefore good at chess.
We were playing with a Lord of the Rings chess set. I was moving the characters I liked best.
Iām terrible at chess.
you won that fair and square
a really smart person would recognizw you were playing some variant of the classic chess strategy, "I just like the horsies"
he be so funny and then boom š let's not
and here are a piece of him if he'd made it up to the second act! his design is so cursed I love him. very expressive. had fun drawing.
yea I've just watched arcane for the 1st time... everything's worse than I expected lmao
One of my favorite hobbies is thinking about the fucked up implications of this fantasy world map my parents got me for christmas
