someone in my state government decided that teachers need to notify parents of s3xually explicit content in instructional material in class and honestly i lowkey agree that graphic depictions of s3x shouldnt be available to minors or at the very least the parents should be aware. BUT part of the law includes s3xual besti4lity. WHY IS SEXU4L INCLUDED WITH BESTI4LITY. WHAT IS NON-SEXU4L BESTI4LITY. WHAT BOOK MADE THEM PUT THAT ON THE LAW.
oh my therapist came up with a way you can have nonsexual bestiality and its romantic bestiality. so i guess you can teach that without parent consent. love that for us.

I’ve been in fandom since *about* when Panic! formed and the adjective!character thing was already going strong, pretty sure it predates them.
It’s a way of referring to particular variations of (usually) a character — dark!Will, junkie!Sherlock, et cetera. I have suspected for a while that it originated from some archive system that didn’t accommodate spaces in its tags, so to make common interpretations/versions of the characters searchable, people started jamming the words together with an infix.
(Lately I’ve seen people use the ! notation when the suffix isn’t the full name, but is actually the second part of a common fandom portmanteau. This bothers me a lot but it happens, so it’s worth being aware of.)
“Bang paths” (! is called a “bang"when not used for emphasis) were the first addressing scheme for email, before modern automatic routing was set up. If you wanted to write a mail to the Steve here in Engineering, you just wrote “Steve” in the to: field and the computer sent it to the local account named Steve. But if it was Steve over in the physics department you wrote it to phys!Steve; the computer sent it to the “phys” computer, which sent it in turn to the Steve account. To get Steve in the Art department over at NYU, you wrote NYU!art!Steve- your computer sends it to the NYU gateway computer sends it to the “art” computer sends it to the Steve account. Etc. (“Bang"s were just chosen because they were on the keyboard, not too visually noisy, and not used for a huge lot already).
It became pretty standard jargon, as I understand, to disambiguate when writing to other humans. First phys!Steve vs the Steve right next to you, just like you were taking to the machine, then getting looser (as jargon does) to reference, say, bearded!Steve vs bald!Steve.
So I’m guessing alternate character version tags probably came from that.
100% born of bang paths. fandom has be floating around on the internet for six seconds longer than there has been an internet so early users just used the jargon associated with the medium and since it’s a handy shorthand, we keep it.
Absolutely from the bang paths–saw people using them in early online fandom back in 1993 for referring to things.
I had been doing it for a very, very long time but never actually knew the actual name for it. This is exciting! I like learning things.
Most of the characters used like this have their genesis in the pre www internet tbh

Things I've learned from British murder mystries
1. Never live in Oxford, you will die 2. Britain is plagued by birdwatchers
Never live in a village outside Corston that’s named Midsommer. Or that little place in America Cabet Cove, where Jessica Fletcher lives.
Several people in the household you’ve only known for a short while are actually your long lost siblings and after your inheritance.
Certain points in the story like a burglary or disappearing items or overheard gossip are part of the B or C plot and have nothing to do with the murder mystery.
The character who’s nastiest and most off-putting on the surface, isn’t the killer.
The person who did any sort of theater in the past (usually mentioned in a throwaway sentence), uses their acting skills to disguise themselves and fool other characters, and is often the killer.
Everyone has skeletons in the closet and the detective will unearth them all.
Never trust a priest or vicar, unless it’s Father Brown. Always trust Father Brown.
People who live in tiny, idyllic English villages are more capable of pulling off outlandish, multi layered murder plots than you can possibly imagine.
Don’t discuss the progression of your case in any public place EVER. In a US murder mystery you can have discussions about violent multiple homicides in the middle of a busy coffee shop and no one will bat an eye. In the UK literally anyone involved in the case knows everyone else and the slightest mention of a suspect in the local pub will lead into a car chase, attempted murder, some kind of arson, being chased through a foggy woodland at night or ALL OF THE ABOVE.
If you’re a detective who received a letter asking for your help, the person who sent it is already dead. Or the murderer creating an alibi.
Your bumbling but good-hearted sidekick will always fall in love with the murderer.
Anyone who knows without a shadow of a doubt who the killer is will try to blackmail them rather than go to the police. Because apparently the fact that this person decided that killing someone was a valid solution before doesn’t set off any warning bells.
At some point a killer will frame you for murder or drag your name down with them. You will lose your badge and be put on garden leave. The killer nearly gets away with framing you, but your trusty sidekick rushes in at the last second, clearing your name and framing the real killer. No one will ever speak about the time you nearly go sent down for murder again though.
If you hire a set of older lady gardeners, someones about to die.
It’s the first person you meet, after your initial introduction to the person who hired the gardeners.
Also, the Lady Gardeners, while having a mnemonic set of names that may or may not be featured in a folk song, will be the most competent detectives in the group even though they were seriously just there to get some gardening done.
In addition,
Miss Fisher is always correct and her outfits are on point while she solves a crime in the 1920s, there is no arguing with this point it’s just fact. Miss Fisher is just smarter than everyone.
