It bothers me so much how most AI discourse singles out AI art as a particularly bad thing when that's one of the least harmful uses of AI. If you're going to be talking about how AI is terrible at least talk about the actually harmful things it could be used for like mass surveillance or layoffs or something instead of "it makes bad art"
I keep seeing people act as though the solution to these problems is to just harass anyone who uses AI until it magically goes away, and that isn't going to work. Sending death threats towards random hobbyists (and don't pretend this doesn't happen, I have seen it happen with my own two eyes) is not going to help anyone and does not address any of the actual problems with AI. The actual problems with AI have nothing to do with consumers and acting as though shaming people for using it is going to fix any of those problems is misguided at best.
the ukraine war is showing us in real time as warfare evolves into swarms of autonomous drones that can operate over dozens of miles and make the final decision on who to kill. moreover it increasingly looks like traditional militaries have no good response to these weapons -- the stable solution is that everyone (with a military they take seriously) is forced not only to adopt them, but go all-in on developing them, and the ai race turns into a more literal arms race.
the fact that this somehow does not enter into the top 10 issues in "ai discourse" drives me insane
Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991) - Perro Aullando A La Luna (dog howling at the moon), oil on canvas, 112.4 x 85.7 cm (1942)
“How does one hate a country, or love one?… I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love for one’s country; is it hate for one’s uncountry? Then it’s not a good thing. Is it simply self-love? That’s a good thing, but one mustn’t make a virtue of it, or a profession.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, from The Left Hand of Darkness (1969)
"incurious" still GOAT insult. You could be better but you're not. You could learn but you won't, and for no good reason, just a base dispositional apathy. Get fucked
To everyone hating the US today: I love you, but don't forget to hate the EU too.
love island should introduce a "scheming eunuch" islander who is like a smart and completely asexual islander exempt from being kicked off or being made to participate in any challenges and they're just there to provide advice and be a sort of sounding board for the other islanders when they need a disinterested party to talk things through with. but the scheming eunuch has secret goals unbeknownst to anyone e.g. a cash prize for talking a certain couple into breaking up etc.

Okay, if you are tired then you won't be able to read. There I say it. No one else want to say it. It is strange. If you are tired, if you cannot finish a book that's a given. That's why you need to read...at work. You need to steal your reading time from your employers.
its kind of sad that bugs are so weak. it dishonors their noble biology. i guess this is is why crustaceans are so admirable. imagine for a moment, an unsquishable bug. such is the way of the crab
What are you reading rn, why are you reading it, and what format are you reading it in (physical book, ereader, on your phone etc)

selections from natalie baxter's 2017-2019 "alt caps" series.
Alt Caps explores the culture of online commenting and gender. Pulling text from reactions to a negative article written about me and my work on Glenn Beck's website, The Blaze, I use sewing and quilting techniques to turn the numerous reactions that question my gender, sexuality and sanity into banners that echo those made by suffragettes or recent protest signs.
