A big problem with fandom aro/ace erasure isn't just that it happens, it's that it's often not a coincidence. It's not just that they do not recognize asexuality and wanted to ship a character who happened to be aro/ace, it is often directly part of the appeal. It is a direct reason why they get invested in shipping that character.

They like the romance, the grand narrative of that character developing feelings they didn't have before/becoming "emotionally developed" or getting over (assumed) repression. They think it makes their ship more engaging if character B is the one who "unlocked" that part of them.

They will tell you both that the character was never aro/ace and you're just seeing things and that they love how the character used to not feel that/was repressed and then developed the capacity for those feelings and "learnt how to love" because of character B.

I cannot stress enough that it isn't just something they ignore/don't recognize, it's something they directly like and make content about. And the obvious connection between that mindset and the dismissal of aro/ace identity/attempts to "correct" aro/ace identity in real life.

Salt of the Earth actually has a crazy interesting history- OP already said it was made in 1954, but that was in the middle of the Red Scare (communism scary cold war hysteria)

Congress’s anti-communism target fell hard on Hollywood, and those in the industry who were suspected of communism at all were blacklisted from all jobs, because studio’s didn’t want to face backlash from Congress

Salt of the Earth was made nearly 100% with blacklisted crew members from Hollywood, and had such difficulty finding actors that they hired local citizens and miners from the actual strike the plot is based on. There were only 5 trained actors involved, and one of them (Rosaura Revueltas, the woman in the gif) was deported to Mexico before they finished filming on accusations of communism, with no proof and no substance. The filming was plagued with police harassment and threats (according to my professor they were shot at more than once), and the local union hall was burned down.

The movie itself not only covers a real 1950′s labor strike demanding safer and more equal labor conditions for Mexican-American employees, but after the miners were facing arrest, their wives and children took up the strike in their place. The movie’s combination of blacklisted crew, civil rights and feminist message, and pro-union plot (during the red scare) got the movie blacklisted and only 12 theaters in the entire United States would show the movie- it was successful in Europe, but didn’t actually achieve viewership in the US until the 60′s

SIMPLE GUIDE:

Body Horror: Things that cannot happen in real life. EX: The Thing, stomach mouths, eyes on hands, etc

Gore: Fresh injuries, often severe. EX: Severed leg, gutspill, deep gashes, etc

NEITHER: Healed injuries and burns, congenital differences, missing appendages, etc. If I could theoretically go to the store and see that character browsing the isles- It isn't body horror or gore. That's just a person. *AND the amount of people that tag, not just fictional characters, but real human beings as body horror is staggering. Its not solely a fandom issue, ableism and bigotry against anyone that looks sufficiently "different" is prevalent in real life and has devastating consequences.
