Grace did teach Rocky swears, is the thing. When Grace starts crying in the last chapter, Rocky says, and I quote, "I haven't seen that in a long-ass time." Eridians do not have an ass. That is either an Eridian swear Grace randomly assigned an English equivalent for, or it's an English swear Rocky made up an Eridian word for.
more evidence:
from this we learn: 1. grace is willing to translate any word rocky gives him regardless of how he's going to use it or how grace feels about it; 2. it's ROCKY who declines to define his cussing even when grace presumably asked him to

Oh, the comments are GOLD
Great job everyone
being in the whump community is genuinely so funny bc someone will unironically say some shit like “i’ve really been into head injuries lately”
can you even imagine how fucking furious you would be if your uncle who married your mother a month after your father’s death proceeded not only to wrestle the throne from your grasp but publicly humiliate you in front of the court that is supposed to be yours about how you’re grieving your father? that it’s unmanly and pathetic to still mourn him after a month? and then tells you he’s only saying this because he loves you? and he thinks you shouldn’t go back to school, just stay here, where you can be together with your family and always be surveilled? the elsinore court really is a prison hamlet is so right
hamlet standing there tasting blood in his mouth while everyone around him admires how kind and benevolent claudius is toward his ungrateful nephew. i would not typically ascribe the virtue of self control to hamlet but it’s kind of incredible it took him 5 acts to kill him

Today I'm thinking about Grace sitting down with his kludged-together Eridian-English translator while Rocky is asleep. He's picking out a shortlist of Eridian 'words' and 'phrases' to try to learn how to mimic with his actual human vocal cords, in case of any emergency that might happen after they arrive at Erid, where he might have no other option for communication.
Grace thinks back about the memories he has of his previous relationships. He thinks about going to a planet where his frame of reference for the culture around him is only his experience with a single individual. He thinks about trying to live on a planet where every breath he takes is a privilege, one that he earns by not pissing off anyone so badly that they choose to revoke it.
The first Eridian 'word' he picks to try and learn how to speak is the sounds for 'apology/sorry'.
What doesn’t get talked about enough is that, all those 40-something years, Rocky had all the supplies he needed to go back home. He had the fuel, he had the food. But he didn’t. He tried and tried and tried. He kept going. He took measurements, gathered data, built new Astrophage samplers but could never get it right. He maintained the Blip-A, a ship that was built in a hurry and just kept breaking, for over FORTY YEARS. When Grace found him, Rocky wasn’t just sitting idle in orbit. He was still working, still trying, he hadn’t given up. He was tracking the stars, probably to watch for a potential second mission from Erid, when he spotted the Hail Mary in reverse-thrust. Rocky calls Grace brave. Truly, Grace is. But I’d compare Rocky more to Stratt. How much of yourself would you be willing to sacrifice to save your planet? Rocky was willing to stay at Tau Ceti for the rest of his life until he either found a solution, or died.
There is absolutely a platonic explanation for that
But I will also entertain the non platonic for my own edification do u understand
they're so silly to me
this is so funny i've been thinking about it for days

Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Eva Stratt but she doesn't go to prison afterwards. Eva Stratt but she's saved the world and she offers herself up as a scapegoat because she mistakenly believes that's what the world wants. Eva Stratt but she wants to go to prison, of course she wants to go to prison, because she wants to be done already, and why isn't this all ending the way she said it would? Eva Stratt but she's wondering what the fuck is taking the guys with the handcuffs so long, because she has sacrificed everything, her future, her soul, her friend for humanity, and someone has to punish her now, right?
Eva Stratt, but the world is cooling. But the crops are failing. But rationing plans need to be drafted and nations need to be threatened into submission, to get as many people as possible out of this alive. But it's her job to be right, and someone who is always right is a very, very valuable resource right now.
Eva Stratt, but someone needs to make the hard calls, needs to weigh lives in the balance, needs to be burdened with choices as heavy as the world itself and no one does it better than her.
Eva Stratt, but she's read the classics, and isn't Dante's hell just having to repeat your sins over and over again?
Eva Stratt, but she's just put Ryland Grace on a ship because he made the mistake of making himself too indispensable; Eva Stratt, but the world is blinking at her, confused, because lol. Lmao, even.
Eva Stratt. But don't you understand, honey, that you've just made yourself indispensable, too?
Ohhhh. Ohhhhh this is Juicy and I want so much more of it.

Wait let's go back for a sec to Rocky calling the laptops "portable thinking machines". At what point do you think Grace actually communicated to Rocky that computers don't "think", in the sense of possessing any kind of sapience? Did Grace tell him that (or did Rocky figure it out on his own) before Grace gifted Rocky with a laptop to take back to Erid??
(Btw, if you didn't know, in the movie Grace offered the laptop to Rocky of his own volition, while in the book Rocky asked Grace for one as a gift to take back to Erid, and Grace went "yeah sure! and can I have some xenonite to take back to Earth?", and Rocky went "yeah sure!".)
I don't think it's 100% unreasonable that Rocky might (at first) mentally categorize a laptop as occupying some weird semi-alive state adjacent to an animal, or between an animal and a fully-sapient person. If you think about it, a laptop's "brain" is much closer to what Eridians use to think than the lump of organic material that Grace uses. Maybe Rocky did even has some kind of ethical 'ick' running in the back of his mind about how Grace treats these 'thinking' things as if they were objects, but he can't afford to alienate Grace while the fate of Erid hangs in the balance. And Rocky can't be *totally* sure that there's some kind of Sentient (or even Sapient) Rights Violation occurring here. This space mission has already been so goddamn weird, who the hell even knows what the humans' deal with computers actually is?
Just think about how entertaining it would be if Rocky and Grace get started on their space road trip to Erid, and when Rocky is done unpacking all his stuff from the Blip-A, he corners Grace for a serious conversation and goes "So, uhhhh, just to clear things up a little -- are the laptops and the ship computer like... some kind of slaves that humans created, or...?"
Rocky also cheerfully rolls with overestimating human capabilities in the movie (pretty inarguably thinking the video logs are somehow reaching Earth), which in retrospect is delightful. He’s on a manic pinball fixit spree and just learned about relativity, of course he’s accepting everything his magical alien bestie whips out. Why not weird brain-on-a-chip thinking machines?
Plus if anything digital did break, Grace would say it was dead!
#This should all come to a head in the context of movie Rocky playing The Sims. Obviously.

Oh there are so. many. ways. that either version of Rocky playing The Sims could go delightfully off the rails, and I am here for ALL of them.
villain going to the goon shelter to pick out a new henchman
this energetic and diabolical boy was rescued from a goon hoarding situation… he loves pulling levers, gloating, and turning cranks with great abandon. prefers to be the only goon. needs an active lair with plenty of enrichment.
now this fella comes with some baggage. his previous villain was going to have put down when he refused to perform unsedated human vivisection as a form of torture. one of our agents intercepted the execution and brought him to the goon shelter. would thrive in an environment of G or PG-rated villainry.
on the other hand, if you’re looking for something a little more… advanced… then this fine lady over here would make a great challenge for an experienced villain able to set firm boundaries. she will NOT be released to first-time villains; proof of prior henchpeople must be demonstrated before adoption approval. high prey drive. under no circumstances should she be left alone with children or small animals. must sign waiver releasing the goon shelter from responsibility if her behavior is deemed excessively depraved.
These two are pair-bonded and may only be adopted together. Up for anything, they are fiercely loyal to their employer provided their needs are met and they are permitted to hold hands. They look alarmingly similar to one another but it is undeterminable whether they are close blood relatives or lovers who choose to dress and style themselves in identical ways. Habit of finishing each other’s sentences with rhyming couplets; we have not attempted to train this out of them. Will answer to whatever names or titles you give them so long as they are complimentary and/or rhyme.
Will you help this goon find his forevil lair? He’s been returned to the goon shelter six times now but we refuse to give up on him. A vile little rat of a man, he’d be the perfect accomplice to someone willing to overlook his unfortunate heterosexuality. If gay-coding is not your style and you don’t expect it from a henchman, please consider giving this little guy a good home in your dastardly schemes.
This guy is not your typical goon. He was rescued from a high-kill shelter after being deemed unfit for henching. His deep baritone voice, his darkly handsome good looks, and his flair for the dramatic have made prospective employers pass over him time and time again, making him the longest resident of the goon shelter. But don’t judge a book by its cover—while his appearance and demeanor suggest “villain”, his real passion is taking orders and faithfully serving a master. If you’re secure in your villainry and not prone to jealousy, he may just be what it takes to turn your base into a lair.
Now this big fella, we've named him Tony the Greek, he was rescued from an illegal goon mill for Runyonland Thugs. This is a very popular breed due to their classically intimidating looks and charming speech patterns, but they are very high-maintenance. The Runyonland Thug was originally bred for debt collection and deterring private investigators, so they need a bustling urban environment to run around in--if you keep him cooped up in your ominous castle or island volcano lair, he'll get restless and start roughing up your other minions. Proper grooming is essential; make sure his suits are nice and pressed and he has a long coat and a hat for when he's going out on errands for you. And they love toys--mostly Tommy guns and brass knuckles, but Tony, you can see, loves his blackjack. Sadly selective breeding has resulted in a tendency towards health problems--alcohol abuse, excessive gambling, getting shot in a police raid--but with care this loyal henchman will bring you joy and your enemies pain for years to come.
