What if everything gets better in 2016
Wait, are you telling me you know the Destroyer of Kingdoms? The evil being we've spent years fighting? "Do I know him? That jerk owes me money."
Silence. Amanda replayed the last couple of minutes in her head. Damn it. How could she let the drills distract her this much? She really should've slept more last night. If she did, maybe she'd manage to train and watch her fucking mouth at the same time. So much time spent protecting her reputation through half-truths and strategic silences, only for it to be destroyed by her trying to hold a conversation while blasting magic at dummies. Jim would laugh himself to death. He'd always mocked her inability to multitask.
She took a big breath, careful not to seem like she was doing it. She tried to smile uncertainly, though she had a feeling a grimace was all she could do, and swiped a look at her peers.
"Guys?"
Out of all of them, it was Francesca who finally broke out of the shocked stupor.
"What do you mean he owes you money? Did you... have you made any... deals?", though she started loud, she whispered the last word.
Amanda cringed.
"You know how it is. The hoarders of wisdoms are usually quite greedy". Good one, Amanda gave herself a mental pat of the back. That was close.
"Hold on", Jeremiah narrowed his eyes. Fucking hell. Couldn't he have stayed stupefied just a little bit longer?, "we were talking about the Destroyer of Kingdoms, not hoarders of wisdom."
"Ah, shoot!", Amanda laughed nervously. "I totally thought we were talking about hoarders of wisdom. Greedy fuckers. You know how I get when I focus too much on my training. My own little world. Oops."
"Oh please, and we're supposed to believe that?" Why, of all people in the Academy, did Jeremiah had to be the one training with her today? "It's obvious that you're hiding something. Either you tell us right now, or I'll go to the Dean with my own suspicions, and just so you know, they are not pretty".
And, well. Amanda always had a low score in mental resilience. She actually had a tutoring session scheduled for this afternoon.
"Okay, so before any of you guys judge me, please consider that it's not like anyone can choose their family–"
"What?"
"Family?!"
"–and honestly, I didn't even want to give him that loan, but you've met my mom, and she can be real pushy, and I'm still learning how to say no, and besides, Jim claimed that he'd needed the money for the dentist, and okay, maybe he should've experienced the consequences of spending all his money on stupid thrones and ugly capes and evil minions, but Christmas is always already awkward as it is, and my parents had favoured him since forever, and I'd like to get a minute of peace when I go home, so I didn't fight them as much as I should've, and believe me, no one regrets this more than I do, I mean, come on, it's May and I haven't seen a cent out of my money, and..."
She ran out of breath at last. The short break immediately prompted a sea of questions, remarks, and borderline animalistic sound.
"You mean to tell me..."
"...all this time..."
"AUGH!"
"...what this institution has become!"
"...family members?!"
"The Destroyer of Kingdoms is your insufferable older brother?!"
Amanda closed her eyes. This is why she never said anything. Her older brother's shadow always followed her anywhere she went. It seemed that this was no exception. When she opened her eyes again, she noticed that, somewhere in the chaos, Jeremiah slipped away. Great.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amanda put her last T-shirt into the suitcase. She couldn't even make it to the mental resilience tutoring class - she got an eviction letter just as she was leaving her dorm. Apparently, the usually sluggish Board of Mages can make some quick decisions. Just a few hours ago, there were no clauses on the kin of Evil Entities being prohibited the Academy of Good Deeds and Protection from Evil - she checked the Code of Conduct thrice before she sent her application in. When she'd stared at the piece of paper, claiming security measures and reasonable doubts in hastily written calligraphy, for a minute there she'd actually came close to what she thought was understanding of Jim's choices.
Well. There's always the option to become an independent Vigilante. Or a lawyer.
She tore the eviction letter in half, and exited the building.
today i just (remembers to maintain privacy online) did something really cool. you have to trust me
You are a villain famous for “killing” heroes. In reality, heroes come to you to fake their deaths.
Sometimes they try to pay you.
You are posted out by the Hollywood sign tonight, sitting under the frame where the W used to be. It got burnt to a crisp during last week’s big superhero fight. A hero died right where you’re sitting. The whole area’s been closed down until Hero Force can coordinate a recovery effort. Usually it’d be done by now but no one’s willing to touch it until the ash has been completely blown away.
It’s a rule that the world must stand still when a hero dies.
“How much?”
The voice comes from behind you. The lights that illuminate the Hollywood sign are down to hide as much of the scorch marks as possible. You wouldn’t be able to see anything even if you did turn around, so you don’t.
You put some chapstick on, the glide of the balm against your wind chapped lips grounding.
“I said,” the Hero says, voice tightening, “How. Much.”
There’s the sound of gravel crunching now. They’re wearing heavy boots and the scent of fresh blood grows stronger the closer they get. Their breathing is smooth and even which means it’s not their blood.
You put the cap back on your chapstick and tuck it into your leather jacket’s inner pocket. “I don’t take money.”
“Then what do you take?” The Hero rounds the Y and comes into your line of sight. The dark hides most of their features, but you can make out a glittering gold mask and the dull shine of drying blood on their chest plate. Their breathing may be even, but their stance isn’t. They sway in place, back and forth, back and forth. Their arms wrap around their stomach. “I’ve got land. A house. You can have it.”

HELPPP WHY WOULD THE INTERVIEWER ASK THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE 💀💀💀
reminds me of this bit from a breaking bad interview with jonathan banks lol
So I just learned a ton of new things about American Psycho from listening to What Went Wrong podcast (which is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite podcasts) which recently did an episode on it. Apparently director Mary Herron wanted Christian Bale in the role because he was the only one who understood the emptiness of Patrick Bateman and saw the movie as a comedy satirizing a culture that caters to the kind of male toxicity and narcissism that allows Bateman to do and get away with the things he does.
The studio gunned hard to get Harron to cast someone more bankable, even firing Bale at one point to woo Leonardo DeCaprio. This did not deter Bale, who apparently kept right on prepping for the role like nothing had happened (mostly, it sounds like, by getting completely ripped at the gym). Meanwhile Harron and her friends embarked on a bit of a stealth campaign and casually convinced DiCaprio to drop out before filming began, dropping all these hints about how he would lose the good will of all the female fans he made after Titanic. This apparently worked and Bale was brought back in, presumably giggling maniacally. The movie eventually came out to mixed reviews with Harron and Bale laughing their heads off the entire premiere.
But before she cast Bale (or DiCaprio), Harron apparently passed on a bunch of actors because they seemed to ADMIRE Patrick Bateman. That wasn't what she wanted and it certainly wasn't the type of person she wanted to work with.
oh and that gap in my resume is when i was digging my own grave
the dirt under my nails is - yeah. it won't wash out. although that's actually from when i dug myself out again. i suppose success and defeat can look the same in a mirror.

With three movies to compare between, I really appreciate how each Knives Out movie explores justice from a different thematic angle, not based on the murder that was committed but based on the cruelty that led to that murder.
In Knives Out, a compassionate, ethical young woman treats everyone around her with generosity, and the people around her repeatedly try to take advantage of her kindness to force her into losing the fortune that was gifted to her by a dear friend. There, justice means that she keeps the fortune and decides that actually, she doesn't have to be kind and giving to people who've proven themselves assholes.
In Glass Onion, a woman loses her sister to a gang of wealthy, successful people who've sacrificed their principles for the sake of ambition and ego. There, justice means that everyone involved will be made notorious: whatever their other accomplishments, they will forever be known for being complicit in the burning of the most famous painting in history.
In Wake Up Dead Man, the church takes advantage of a young girl's loyalty and faith to place her under a lifelong burden and fill her with guilt, shame, and hatred. Justice means helping her understand what was done to her and the women around her, and giving her compassion so she can find peace.
This is cool because it means the movies contradict each other! The compassionate justice of Wake Up Dead Man would be totally misplaced in Knives Out, and so would the toppling-monuments justice of Glass Onion. And because each movie has something different to say, they all stand on their own and feel fresh.
This is also why Benoit Blanc is the uniting figure but never the protagonist of these movies. He's an agent of legal justice in that he's the detective and it's his job to figure out whodunnit, but the protagonist -- Marta, Helen, and now Jud -- is always the character who delivers thematic justice.
Once again so impressed with Rian Johnson’s attention to detail! You can see the stitched-on devils head from the very start of the film, but of course no one is looking out for that so no one would pickup on it! Samson disappears into the back rooms when Martha asks for a minute ‘alone’ with Wicks, and we don’t see him throughout the entire funeral - something you can be forgiven for missing due to the generic nature of ensemble scenes!
Event the (non-)diegetic passage of time is correct! Jud says that it took him an hour to write down everything that happened in the recap for Blanc at exactly an hour into the film starting! It’s exactly ten minutes from Martha walking into the church to her going for her final prayer (the timeline set out by dr. Nat), and then another 19 mins between her first feeling the effects and her final death. You can even see the moment Blanc realises what she did as she touches her lips just before he stops talking!
There’s so many more and honestly kudos to all the editors and props and set teams and actors who made this all work so perfectly!
