new to studyblr
hello I’m tryna finish my degree hard I know someone on twitter says there’s a big studying community type thingy on tumblr so I’m back on here looking for other people that are studying to find some... community? so we can all cry together? sympathy? one of the problems I faced last year was feeling isolated cos I’m not in the same country as my boyfriend/ harry potter friends and then I felt v sad and most of my friends here have actual jobs and then I felt sadder and just spent all my time watching quiverfull documentaries and not working on my essays. I’d like to see other people studying / read about other people studying so I don’t feel so alone and also am reminded that studying is important, and I’ll talk about my progress. yay. woo. one step closer to defeating fascism.
essay writing strategy
if you’re like me, maybe you have trouble staying focused on your essays or remembering what you’re writing about when you trail off mid paragraph,
or hate scrolling up and down the page to see things youve written previously/remember what you were talking about!
ive developed a strategy for countering this sort of thing in my own work, and figured hey maybe i should type it out because it might help some other people who struggle with similar things! so here goes!
also, uh .. I dunno if anyone cares about this but im using the Great Gatsby as an example, so if you care about being spoiled about stuff that happens in that book.. dont read the examples?
1. Rewrite/copy down your prompt.
If you have short term memory problems like I do, this can help you actually remember what it is that you’re supposed to be talking about; and if you have issues skimming and skipping words in a sentence, it forces you to read all of it and not miss a key part of your prompt.
Example prompt: Explore the thematic significance of symbols of wealth in The Great Gatsby, and what the author uses them to say about society in the text.
2. Make a messy bullet point list of what you know.
This doesn’t need to be organized. In fact, it shouldn’t be. At this point you’re just throwing your ideas out onto the word processor. Examples you can use, points you want to make, anything else that comes to mind.
Example:
Gatsby’s car
Daisy as a symbol of money & american dream
(quote about her voice being full of money)
the valley of ashes
capitalism is bad bcuz it favors people with old money etc
the boat guy
3. Cut down & reorder your bullet points to make yourself a neat little list.
Your outline is starting to take shape now! If you can, it’s a good idea to try and think of transitions now; how you’re going to move from subject to subject in your essay. Now is a good time to elaborate on your points, too.
Example:
Daisy as a symbol of money & american dream
(quote about her voice being full of money)
the valley of ashes
(tie that in with the deaths of gatsby and wilson, all the people who “lost” in the book started poor, transition to:
capitalism is bad bcuz it favors people with old money etc, end with fancy ass profound quote if u think of one by then
4. Gather all your points and squish em into one introductory sentence.
Your thesis statement, if you rather. Your thesis statement is something of a “preview” of what’s to come later in the essay, so it’s better to write this after you’ve got your outline down! Make sure that your thesis statement answers/addresses the question posed in the prompt.
Example:
topics covered (daisy, valley of ashes, capitalism, people dead)
In his novel the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald seems to be criticizing how the American system is stacked against the poor, making it difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to truly achieve the elusive “American Dream”.
5. Stick all that together
Now you’ve got the backbone of your essay! - your thesis statement, and the “topic” of each bit of the rest of your essay. Put this all together, and you’re ready to start padding it out.
Example:
(theeeeesiiiiiiiiiisssss) In his novel the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald seems to be criticizing how the American system is stacked against the poor, making it difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to truly achieve the elusive “American Dream”.
Daisy as a symbol of money/the american dream (quote about her voice being full of money)
The valley of ashes (poor people in a bad situation in the wasteland of the city)
capitalism sucks bcuz it favors old money, profound quote, bam done we’re gona rock it
6. Start padding out your essay!
See, what I like about writing an essay like this is that you don’t have to scroll around your page in order to know what you’re supposed to be writing about in the section you’re working on. Using your bullet points as a guide, write your paragraph under each one.
Example:
Daisy as a symbol of money/the american dream (quote about her voice being full of money)
A powerful symbol Fitzgerald uses to represent the American Dream is the character Daisy Buchanan. She is explicitly said to have a voice “full of money” and is pursued by many. However, when Gatsby finally achieves his dream of having her in his reach, she seems less magical, less perfect than he remembers; much like the American Dream seems from “close up”. Interestingly, the only one in the end who gets to have “the Dream” is Tom, someone born into money. Gatsby’s attempts to keep her are arguably in vain due to the fact that he used to be poor.
The valley of ashes (poor people in a bad situation in the wasteland of the city)
Further commentary on wealth is evident in the area aptly named as the “Valley of Ashes”; the shadow of glamorous, frivolous New York, it is where the poor are left fighting for scraps and cleaning up what the rich left behind. (god, im not gonna finish this, im not getting a grade for this, you get the idea right? write the essay inside your outline. use it like a spine. like a tree trunk, and write the leaves around it.)
7. Write out an intro and conclusion to fit your middle paragraphs.
Your introduction needs to “fade in” and bring the readers to your “point”; your conclusion needs to “fade out” and show the bigger picture and how your essay applies to other areas. (These aren’t rules that are set in stone per se, just good guidelines to follow when you dont have any other ideas.)
Your thesis statement is ideally the end of your introduction, leading into the rest of your essay. Generally, the thesis is “restated” in different words in the conclusion, as if in summary.
8. Delete your outline bullet points and clean it up a little.
This is like erasing your construction lines after you finish a drawing, and then make sure it flows smoothly together. Reading it outloud to yourself is a good idea, it will help you catch any glaring errors.
9. Congrats you wrote that dam essay!!
good job dude!!!!! give yourself a pat on the back and maybe a treat bcuz you deserve it!
if you’re embarrassed by the person you were 5 years ago, good. bc it means you’ve grown. you’ve educated yourself and expanded your horizons. given half the chance, I’d deck 2011 me right in the face .

22 year-old trans women in Portland OR needs a place to stay
I have a friend in Portland Oregon who needs help. She is a 22 year-old trans woman and will be homeless on August 18th and has told me she will kill herself rather than be homeless. This young lady has been through a lot and is a survivor, but she has a difficult time seeing that because she is so worn down right now. She served in the Army, has a background in social work, and is intelligent and driven. But right now she’s really down from struggling to find a job, struggling to get health coverage so she can get back on hormones, and just feeling very frustrated and hopeless. I am doing what I can to help her and reaching out to everyone I can think of, but she’s shutting down and pushing everyone away. She has been in homeless shelters before when she first moved her and is not wanting to go through that again. This young lady is a good person and has so much life ahead of her and so much to offer, if we can just get her through this difficult time in her life and keep her alive. If you can help or know of anyone who may be able to help, please let me know. We as a community have lost too many lives lately and we need to ensure she does not become another name on that list. I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you.
What to do when youre trans boyfriend is on his period
make sure he is very comfortable and very warm
make sure he’s wearing just his underwear (panties or briefs, no boxers) and a loose t-shirt. It may be tough, but make him comfortable enough to get out of his binder as that will make him throw up/hurt more
make sure he has chocolate (dark chocolate works best)
no caffeine. Hot decaf tea is amazing
keep them drinking hot liquids for as long as possible.
Rub their tummies, put a good amount of pressure, like hand kneading dough, in the space beneath their belly button
hot rice bags.
put all of their blankets in the dryer before bed
kiss their faces a lot, do this tenderly and softly
make sure that they feel masculine and okay. This is a big reminder that their bodies are wrong and that they are not in the right place. You are the right place for them to be, so you have to make sure they are feeling safe and secure, mentally and physically
If they can, keep them walking/working out. Walking relieves cramps, as does sit ups. If the pain is too much this is not possible.
make sure they eat. A lot of people on their periods do not feel hungry but they need to eat something. Make sure it’s a light and not too filling meal so it doesnt give them a stomach ache
I LOVE THIS
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT

Hi again, I reside in an area where there is almost a non-existing Asian population let alone Chinese so there is minimal to no conversation as to the complexities or parallels between Black privilege and Chinese privilege. Would you happen to have an information or thoughts on Chinese privilege in Malaysia?
Honestly, I do not believe Chinese people have privilege in Malaysia. I think you need institutional power to have privilege and I think Chinese Malaysians lack it. I know it is not as simple as in Singapore where the Chinese have power in every area. In Malaysia, Malays lack economic power, which the Chinese do have, while Malays have political power. But of course, even that is not so simple, as economic power so often can translate to political power.
But my stand remains thus: in my comparisons of Singapore and Malaysia, I feel Malaysian Chinese do not have privilege. I also feel that is why when they come to Singapore, they are often the Chinese with the most empathy for Singaporean minorities.
That is my personal viewpoint based on the information I know. Tariqk has said some really enlightening stuff on this on this post. I feel this is best discussed and answered by Malaysians themselves. Maybe tariqk can add to this?
Ah, racial privilege in Malaysia.
I kind of mildly disagree with thisissgchineseprivilege, but only in details. I do believed that the Malays are politically privileged in Malaysia, while the Chinese are economically privileged, but it’s kind of complicated.
Actually, let me reframe that.
I’ve always held the belief that in Malaysia there are two kinds of hegemonies that are often in conflict: that of the white supremacy we inherited from our colonial masters, and the nativist ideology that seeks to supplant white supremacy, or what is known as “Ketuanan Melayu”.
Actually the name is pretty apt, since the goal of Ketuanan Melayu — otherwise known as Malay supremacy — is to replace one set of Tuans (Malay for “Sirs”) with another.
So basically you’ve got the people with most of the political power — in this case, exemplified by both members of UMNO and PAS, along with the affiliated NGOs and, hem hem, “cultural organizations” — squaring off against, well, affluent, Western-educated and “progressive” Malaysians. It’s kind of interesting in that while one side is racially- and (especially during the past couple of decades) religiously-based, the other side is more class-based, encompassing not just the Chinese (although often stereotyped as such!) but other races, including Malays. But it does internalize its own forms of racism, which include essentialist views of Malays, racist stereotypes, some degree of Islamophobic trope-peddling, xenophobia and colorism.
It’s not as straightforward as countries where a majority both dominates politics and the economy, because as thisissgchineseprivilege states, economic power does translate to political power, and, what with crony capitalism, vice-versa. So you can have circumstances both ultracapitalist Western-influenced Malaysians and ultranationalist nativist Malay-Muslim groups can come to the same conclusion about the essential weakness of Malays, but of course have completely different ideas of what should be done: of course the ultra-capitalists want the Malays to “accept that they can no longer be protected and must thus stand on their two feet” while the ultranationalists want the Malays to be “protected from Western influences”.
And this of course doesn’t cover the complexities of other race relations issues that Malaysians deal with and face on a daily basis, from the aforementioned xenophobia against migrants, the Malay community’s complicated relationship with Arabs and Arab culture, our anti-blackness, the poor relationship between Peninsular Malaysians and East Malaysians, and the relationships between each state within Malaysia.
I tell you, Malaysians have such promise to actually quickly and intuitively pick up race studies, if only we applied ourselves, because honestly, we live and navigate around such complexities.
okay so for my first not-vague post about geekycon this year
the positivity and encouraging atmosphere at gc always makes me leave the con feeling like i can literally do anything i set my mind to, and i fucking love it. a common thing i heard throughout the con this year was creators telling attendees that we are the next generation of creators and we should put our art and stuff out in the world, and hearing that a lot of people i look up to started out basically by saying “i’m going to do this thing just because i want to” is super important bc it makes me feel like i can do the same thing as long as i try hard enough.
like if i want to make a podcast, i can do that! if i want to start a wizard rock band, i can do that! what’s stopping me? nothing!!!
props to the wtnv team, hatp, steph anderson, and the full-time geek panel for making me have a renewed creative spark and a desire to DO MORE STUFF.
