For those of you getting ready for con season (ahem, Kamicon), here’s an easy way to remove old makeup stains! Mix a bit of blue dish soap and peroxide together and scrub the stained area with it.

i already crochet but deeply want to learn to knit for garments (sweaters and maybe socks?). during attempt 1 of making a square, knit stitches are fine enough but purls are evil. any recommendations for good on ramps to things to wear? i think i will lose my needles and patience from procrastination before getting through a rectangle scarf

I found something I wanted to wear and just went for it. I don't really subscribe to the whole "knit a hat knit a scarf" on-ramp idea. The only thing a basic scarf is going to teach you is tension and how to k/p, and frankly that's something you can figure out doing swatches. What keeps you going while you learn is the idea of the finished product, so find a pattern you'll like having in your closet!

My first clothing pattern was the Petite Knit Cumulus Tee, and it was pretty straightforward. I still wear it, even though I can now see that my early construction was ass. Lots of folks start with the Step By Step Sweater, too.

Never work your way up to anything in knitting! Seize the sword and just start!

Interesting - I was going to say something about how wild period fabric prints can be (in historical costuming we can get a bit focused on very specific rules for prints in ways that would rule out a huge number of real ones) but in looking at the detail shots, this seems to be fabric scales attached to a base layer, with the grain going every which way. Weird!

No it's definitely brocade, there's a pretty clear pattern repeat and no raised texture visible on the edges like there would be if it had appliqué.

I think what you're seeing as grainline is the variation in all the little floats that are blending two subtly different shades of blue together.

TWO FREE PATTERNS!

For those who don't know, I'm doing my PhD dissertation on 19th-century plus-size fashion, and as part of it I've been patterning larger antique garments.

Last year, I was able to go to Genesee Country Village & Museum in upstate NY and pattern an early 1800s corset as well as an 1830s dress. Full instructions, photo albums, & print-optimized versions up on Etsy if you need more guidance or would like to support my work, but my agreement with the museum was that I would put simple gridded patterns up for free alongside the paid versions. And those are now up!

1830s dress (L/XL) Bust: ~43” (109cm) with the center-front gap Waist: 32.5” (82.5cm)

Last year, curator Brandon Brooks at Genesee Country Village & Museum was kind enough to let me come and pattern a c. 1831 morning dress in
