katara keeps the gaang alive mentally while sokka keeps them alive physically. because katara is headstrong and compassionate, never backing down from anything or anyone that needs her help, she’s capable of pulling the group back toward each other whenever they start drifting and always makes sure to remind everyone that staying together is what matters most. while sokka is caring, reliable, and fiercely protective of the people he loves. he is the one worrying about survival; food, money, plans, shelter, time. he’s always thinking three steps ahead, making sure they don’t waste resources or get distracted by things that could put them at risk. katara becomes the backbone and glue of the group because she can’t stand the thought of staying passive and losing the people she loves. sokka becomes the provider and protector because he’s spent his whole life being responsible of keeping the people he cares about alive. they’re both so used to being the anchors in others’ lives that they subconsciously carry those roles into the group dynamic. and because of that, they both end up pushing aside their own needs for the sake of everyone else.

Toph Modern AU (ig and tiktok: k.rwly)

I wanted to represent people with visual impairment more so I gave Toph a service dog inspired by badgermoles.At the same time despite that I think she'd also be an athlete, a paralympic wrestler (she gives me pitfighter vibes like her first arcs). I watched a documentary on a blind wrestler that said wrestling is a pretty good sport for blind people considered it relied more on physical contact and grappling. Blindness can come in a spectrum, some still have 40% vision, some have 10% which can be used slightly in that sport. Anyways hope you all like my take on modern au toph ^^

Thinking about doing the rest of the gaang if this goes well ^^

Wait wait. I just saw the clip of Iroh going over the elements and

“Water is the element of change. The people of the water tribe are capable of adapting to many things”

I have always thought of this with Katara who literally set out to punch outdated traditions in the face and was of course a water bender. I forgot about Sokka!

He went full inventor! He overcame is bigoted beliefs! Oh I love this! The elements aren’t just about the bending and how they use them, it’s also how the nonbenders internalize the culture!

I low key want to go over the nonbender characters now and see how much they tie to their nation’s elements.

Also “they have a deep sense of community and love that holds them through anything” when Sokka and Katara are the one set of siblings that work together and their family is the only one shown that is consistently there for each other. Oh that’s so sweet. They fight like mad sometimes, but they’ve got each other’s backs. Episode 1 Katara says she’s going on an insane mission to save the Avatar and Sokka’s there with a canoe to chase a warship with. Katara definitely has a more central role but Sokka is there to tie the team together as a strategist and support Katara as her brother and it’s so sweet.
