There is good reason for this spice aversion.
The first principle upon which high society held their standards to was a matter of transition from Spice onto “Freshness”. Hygienistry was a particular fadding fancy, so to the natural extent of the world, thus Grahamites took ahold of one’s humane curiosities. Diets, (as dear reader so well are you informed) habits, restrictions of ev’ry vices deemed well satisfactory to the body, can be so heavily relied upon by the unsatisfiable public, since the dawn of man. I believe that the matter of preference and habitual natures of which I have relayed is best reflected and understood upon the Californian High society at present, surviving the testament of time to become “Healthy Living” and “Crunchy Mom”, engendering split off behavioral and “Life Style Habits” as one would assume a hydra. Suffice to say one cannot be that surprised that a momentum with Grifters as ringleaders, progenated inspiration from descendants that sprung a momentum lead by Grifters. I presume this bit of propaganda came about by them.
Now, as it’s laid out the cultural attitudes of era, several cultural causes amassed panic over spices. These being major concerns for: Temperament, Novelty, Preservation, Afflictions, and Entanglement amidst the Other Races (Bluntly present reader, as you are concerned, Racist attitudes).
Temperament was a staple for living a balanced life, the four temperaments being Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic of the ancients were heralded and referred to as oft as the good book. Spice of any variety was pointed to as a source of off temperament, believed to be the gates of evry which vice, most notably partaking in drink, in gloving, in masturbation, in pool parlors and in gambling. Fearing a sudden and imminent death by the consequences for their actions.
Of the matter of racial relations, it is not one of greater complexity, and holds a higher proportion of arrogance and superiority. Thus I shan’t hold it so. Dare speak of gathering around a table with a Chinaman, Irishman, Mexican, Indian and Sicilian for want of variety and flavor profile, and companionship, lest your reputation and good graces are in the pits. Partake and enjoyment of any spices could deem you Lesser Than, thus the painfully dull and boring approach of “Tolerance, but not Fufillment of,” became etiquette. One mustn’t remark much over spices in a setting! O! Nay! Your fairer nature compels you, lest it blemish to the desires of indulgence! Tat.
Diseases of the body and transmissions were scant understood (by public recognition), it was feared that transmissions via the importation of spice may spark about some great illness. Thus, spices again held blame.
Preservation of goods is not an innate factor, as those presume it to be today. One did not arrive from the womb equipped with ev’ry manner of tinning, salting and bottling. Practices were assumed of the settlers, of the subservient, and the women of the house. Those lacking the knowledge be it of upbringing took to meals in successions rather than storage. There was no consideration of the idea of longevity in this condition. For those that could provide longevity to stock, still lay the risk of decay and botulism when ill prepared. Lo, the common usage of spices was treated with suspicion and in caution, for spices have the propensity to mask odor and other markers of fouling. Thus poisons (both willingly added, or unknowingly) were indeed a terrible concern. I bless the miracle that is refrigeration, yet that is a subject matter for another time.
Naturally, social tastes were beginning to diverge from those of later years. Forgotten was the oily decadent feasts from aristocratic tables from the days of yore, as considered goache, and outdated, replaced with a blander more permissible palette. The period of Enlightenment of Georgian peeled grapes were replaced with toast tea. From my understanding, this change in sensibilities is akin to the present sentiments of 1990’s “EZ SQUIRT Purple Ketchup” and “SLURGE”, issuing a mutual agreed upon recoil. Naturally mothers were issued warnings over these indulgences, like spice.
