I love this idea, but also now I'm going on a total tangent because of a silly idea it gave me.
Ok so you know the bit of vampire lore of "kill the sire = kill all vampires they sired"? Not used much because it's like...look if you stop and think about it for too long then how the fuck do vampires still exist? The probability of dying due to an accident approaches 100% the longer you're alive, and thus the OG Vampire would certainly die and take the rest of vampire kind with them.
Consider: Vampires have restrictions, but those are like, individual stuff and not every vampire has their own one. But they also inherit them, so if a vampire was sensitive to sunlight, all vampires descended from them are.
And these rules die with their progenitor. So like, one day a whole swathe of vampires suddenly find out they can totally tolerate garlic now. A vampire stops part way through counting a pile of grains, the compulsion evaporated (because The Count, their great-times-20 grand-sire just fell down the stairs and landed on a stake).
Experienced vampire hunters everywhere are wary about hunting overly old and powerful vampires as a sort of cost/benefit thing. Like, yeah the Dark Father Bonifacius di Venezio is a serious problem, but he was also a very devout priest before he was turned and suddenly being unable to ward off 90% of the vampires in Europe with a crucifix is going to be a net negative to human survival.

a thing about me is i basically never notice a wig or other kind of hairpiece in tv/movies. it has to be party city territory for me to even twig it. people will complain about characters' wigs looking bad and i will nod along but there is like a 90% chance i did not notice for a second while watching. i consider this mostly a blessing.

is it bad that i find it really fun to persistently undo wikipedia vandalism until they get pissed at me? ive had TWO people crash out so hard theyve started putting my username in articles TODAY, and another who claimed they would be reporting me to the "ceo of wikipedia". just for stopping them from vandalizing
if I had the energy to maintain a gimmick blog I know exactly what I'd do. it'd be a poll blog of "is this common knowledge". because to me certain shit seems self evident or like everyone should know it and so often this ends up being very much not the case.
So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason we’re doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. They’re plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and they’re missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.
