Right now America is in the midst of a gun debate. Vice President Joe Biden is meeting with people from both sides of the aisle to see what actions need to be taken. So, what we can expect is for the left to bring up accusations that guns are the vilest things man has ever created and that our country needs to be rid of them. Although, when one actually looks at the facts that couldn’t be farther from the truth. From 1991-2009 gun ownership in America more than doubled. These are the results from an increase in gun ownership: Total violent crime went down 43%; Murder rate went down 49%; cases of rape went down 32%; Robbery went down 51%; and aggravated assault went down 39%. In 2011 the FBI reports that there were 12,664 homicides in the United States. Out of those, 8,583 were caused by firearms. However, 400 were considered justifiable by law enforcements, and 260 were justifiable by private citizens. After the math 7,923 homicides were committed with a firearm as the murder weapon. The United States has the highest gun ownership in the world with 88 guns per 100 people. However, America doesn’t have the highest gun homicide rate in the world. In fact America doesn’t even rank in the top 20. The U.S. ranks number 28 with 2.97 gun homicides per 100,000 people. Those facts within themselves are hard to argue but, you also have people on the left saying we should follow the path of the British and completely ban guns like they have. After looking at the following facts though, that would be a hard argument to make. The UK has the 2nd highest overall crime rate in the European Union; the 5th highest robbery rate; the 4th highest burglary rate; and the EU has awarded Britain as the most violent country in the union. Even worse the UK has 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 people, more than South Africa who has 1,609 violent crimes per 100,000 people, and more than quadrupling the United States who has only 466 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The facts speak for themselves. Guns make America a safer place. To think that every American that owns a gun is trigger happy, and on the brink of going on a killing spree is just absurd. Instead of worrying about guns we need to focus on who is holding the gun. There needs to be a debate, but it needs to be on mental health, not guns. Statistic after statistic proves that having guns in our country is causing more good than bad. After all, 2,000,000 lives are saved every year in the United States thanks to guns. No matter how you spin it the answer is the same. Guns make America a safer place.
