Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

I’m not sure why the current talking point is that democrats need to support a not super popular moronic streamer who said many voter friendly things such as American deserves 9/11 or they will lose. Weird point to make.

"the world is actually run by the cia" it is in the cia's interest not to piss off the entire world, crash the economy, and remove all diplomats and global development staff members in the stupidest possible way. if the cia was running things they would have carefully shot a certain someone on the back of the head by now. they haven't. they aren't going to.

"the world is actually run by big businesses" if this was the case, they would have prevented the mad king from slashing $11 trillion off the stock market. the idea that this is an organized culling so big companies can swoop in and buy everything cheap belies the fact that big companies are seriously freaking out and begging him to rescind the tariffs. they can't justify building manufacturing plants in america. those don't spring up overnight, businesses don't know what the situation will be in four years, and at this point they probably cannot afford to build manufacturing plants because everything has a 50% upcharge on it overnight. every single living economist in the world, of every single political stripe, thinks this is fucking insane. and, as i have said before, elon has noticed by now that he's taken a $275 billion+ hit on his net worth and that it's going down by the minute, but he's not stopping because he isn't primarily driven by greed

"the democrats could have stopped this but are too feckless and weak" but we have established that the cia, the entire weight of the global financier/business class, israel, even saudi arabia or qatar if you want to add those vague conspiracies, can't do anything - how is the minority party going to make it happen (and they are attempting to do things, don't let anyone tell you different, but, as they are the minority party in a hyperpolarized 2-party system, that means nothing is going to happen without either massive electoral wins or the efforts of republicans)

turns out the US is run by people that are elected to run it. if certain insane or cowardly persons are elected, certain things will happen.
