i think about renee's quote "im a bad person trying very hard to be a good person" all the time, and it's like. she literally Isn't a bad person. she never was. when she was in the gang, doing gang-related activities? when she killed a rapist? when she snitched? she was never a bad person through any of that. she couldn't be because she was a child. the idea that she needs faith and has to cover up her inner "darkness" or whatever has always felt so strange to me and i genuinely cannot imagine what led her to that belief other than the restrictive morality of christianity.

to be clear, i get that renee's relationship to her religion (presumably) is on the side of theological grace rather than intolerance (her relationship to andrew is one example of this), but a primary aspect of christianity revolves around sin. the same level of theological grace that she offers others isn't what she offers to herself, which isn't uncommon when it comes to these spaces (catholic guilt, for example).

im not saying that her faith or desire to be a good person is a bad thing. i am saying that im fascinated by the concept of her experiencing religious guilt/trauma and not realizing or fully processing that for a while. and i do wonder about her relationship to her faith and how much of that is dependent on her desire for redemption and how much of it ties into her attachment to stephanie, her foster mother. i don't think stephanie needed renee to embrace christianity to take care of or love her, but renee was in foster care and if iirc went through multiple homes before she landed with stephanie. so presumably stephanie did something no one else had previously done to make renee feel cared for, loved, and accepted, and in the end, helped renee find her faith. i wonder how much of stephanie's relationship to faith plays into renee's, and whether some part of her feels obligated to it, even if she doesn't realize it.

"My mum won't let me" Okay I am 30 goddamn years old and I still have this thought so let's walk through it together.

What's the worst that can happen if you do it anyway? Genuinely. The literal worst. Catastrophise about it with me for a sec.

Will your mum yell at you? You're an adult. Yelling at fellow adults is Not Okay Actually. (Yelling at kids is also not okay but let's take this one step at a time.) If your mum is yelling at you, a fellow adult, she's the one being weird and out of line. You asked your friend and they said so too (me. I'm the friend.)

Will she cut off your phone plan? That would be a problem. Can you look into whether you can afford to switch to a new plan she doesn't have access to? Most phone companies will let you port your number over pretty easily.

Will she cut you off financially? Run the numbers again. Can you afford for that to happen? If the answer is no, that's okay, I believe you and I know you're making the best decision for your own well-being that you can in the moment. If there's anything you can do to make it more affordable, I do suggest doing that, though.

Will she be physically violent, inclusive of breaking stuff that belongs to you? That’s assault. That's a crime. It's not okay for her to do that and she almost certainly knows it.

Will she stop talking to you? Honestly I gotta say at this point that's not sounding like a bad outcome. It sucks. It really really sucks and I'm sorry if that's a choice you're having to make, but take it from someone who's been there and done that: when someone who is being abusive to you (stalking is abuse! Yelling at you is abuse! Threatening to cut off your funds if you don't do what they want forever is abuse! Breaking your stuff or physically hurting you is abuse!) decides of their own volition to cut you off, it hurts for a hot minute, and then you suddenly realise that you can breathe, and it feels so. Goddamn. Amazing.

Delete the tracking application. Live where you want to live. Change your name. Join or leave the religion. Get the piercing or the tattoo or the surgery. Live your life, because it's yours and not your parents'.

Scott just lets out a long sigh everytime and counts to ten in his head.

He ends up on the same flight to New York as Shane after an away game in Ottawa, with Scott going back home and Shane travelling for the launch of a new Rebook store in New York.

And Scott can't help but laugh when he sees what the in flight movie options are. At Shane's curious look he waves at the small tv screen and explains the bit Ilya has going on. And Shane, just for a second, gets this weird glint in his eyes before offering Scott one of his earbuds with a smile.

"Want to rewatch the game with me instead?", he asks, holding up his IPad. And, why the hell not, Scott thinks, there are worse things than reviewing their game with Shane (even though he doubts Shane will share any of his strategical thoughts with him).

So, Scott takes the earbud and settles into his seat. Only to be hit with the opening notes of Jurrasic Park five seconds in.
