I think I might have just been filmed in public without my consent.

I was riding the bus, while this girl / young woman (she seemed like she was in her late teens, possibly early 20's) was sitting in the seat in front of me filming a video of herself talking. It's important to note that I was in the very back of the bus where the seat is above the back wheel, so my seat was higher than hers which is why I was clearly in view of her without being obstructed by the seat, albeit higher up above her.

I couldn't hear what she was saying because I had my noise cancelling headphones on, but she was filming herself with the front facing camera, and I wasn't paying attention at first but I noticed that while she was filming she kept sort of quickly flashing her phone upwards so that I would be in the frame for about a second before quickly angling it back down for only her to be fully in the frame. The first time I noticed it I thought it was an accident, but then she kept doing it.

Unfortunately I did not have the courage to confront her or do anything about it and ended up defaulting to freezing. Especially because she was flashing her phone up at me so quickly it would have been easy to deny if I had confronted her over it. I guess I could have started making weird and ugly faces, but unfortunately I went into freeze when I suspected I was being filmed.

I just hate that this kind of behavior has become so normalized and accepted in public. I know that bullies and harassers have always existed, but this is such a cowardly and passive way to bully someone. Before smartphones, if this girl thought I was weird or ugly looking she probably would have kept that to herself. I have my doubts that people who make fun of others in such a cowardly and passive way actually have it in them to do it to someone's face if they're not enabled with smartphones. Or, if by chance she did have it in her to mock me to my face for being ugly or weird looking, it would have been confined to that bus instead of publicized for an audience of hundreds of people, all behind my back.

I know people have been saying "I worry about the young people today" since time immemorial, but I really, really, worry about today's teenagers growing up in this environment with this sort of behavior being the norm.

This artwork by Ola represents an idea from the prison writings of Abdullah Öcalan. His work describes the history of human society through the myth of two rivers flowing through time: the river of state civilization (patriarchy, enslavement, capitalism, nationalism, political monopolies, destruction of nature, ethnic hatred), whose present form is Capitalist Modernity; and the river of democratic civilization (matriarchy, socialism, ecology, egalitarianism, direct democracy, racial justice), through which we build Democratic Modernity. The artwork above depicts the river starting with egalitarian Neolithic societies, and flowing through various indigenous societies and the Haitian Revolution.

To Öcalan, there is always reason to hope for the future, no matter how destructive and powerful state civilization is in our present moment. Because the river of Democratic Modernity flows through all people who act in resistance against the state, oppression, and exploitation. It always has the ability to rise up, and it will again, and again. This is because, to Öcalan, the state is a parasite on society; the society can exist without it, but the state needs to leech off society to maintain power.

When viewed in the light of the various broad definitions I have presented, it is obvious that the democratic civilization system—essentially the moral and political totality of social nature—has always existed and sustained itself as the flip side of the official history of civilization. Despite all the oppression and exploitation at the hands of the official world-system, the other face of society could not be destroyed. In fact, it is impossible to destroy it. Just as capitalism cannot sustain itself without noncapitalist society, civilization—the official world system—also cannot sustain itself without the democratic civilization system. More concretely the civilization with monopolies cannot sustain itself without the existence of a civilization without monopolies. The opposite is not true. Democratic civilization, representing the historical flow of the system of moral and political society, can sustain itself more comfortably and with fewer obstacles in the absence of the official civilization.

One of my dream projects has an NPC with a dog, and if you try to pet it, the owner tells you not to do that. If you try again, it bites you and you take damage. I want to do this entirely because I genuinely believe that this would make me feel way more grounded in the world than any “click button to see cute animation” would ever do, and also it would be really funny to have a game where people lose their runs because they tried to pet a dog they were told not to pet
