Yup!!!!
So with as busy as I've been finishing school and getting my business up and running I haven't had a lot of time to work on the fabrial. I finished making the hands, though I had to modify them from the drawing slightly. The dial is partially made, though I need to practice my hand engraving before I can finish it. The last change is that the brass surround for the movements had to be remade and is taking a while because it needs a lot of hand filing to shape it.
I'm hoping my brain will remind me to start posting more, but I'm super busy. I just started renting a shop space with some of my former classmates to start doing repair and restoration of watches. We are also going to be starting to manufacture parts and tools that haven't been made in the USA for a very long time so that's taking a lot of my time.
Keep forgetting to post here, but this happened. Not that much is changing because now I'm an apprentice to learn more under the director of the school
So far in my schooling I've been doing repair and restoration but I've decided to start on a project to actually make something. I chose the wrist fabrial from stormlight. To make things easier I'm starting with premade movements for the two timekeepers but eventually I'll make replacements from scratch.
So besides dyeing and stitching the leather is done and the movements are almost fully restored for the vambrace. Next step will be dyeing the leather while making the mechanism for holding the cases to the leather.
One of the issues I'm having is with metal choices, which of course metals are an issue with a Brandon Sanderson work 🙄 Brass is the traditional metal for most structural parts of watchmaking, as you can see in the movement pictures, but steel or aluminum would look better with the blue and tan Kholin colors. The problem is that steel is more difficult to work with and aluminum would be prohibitively expensive in world so idk
For the movements I found an antique time only movement for the front timepiece and an old travel alarm for the stormpiece. The one obstacle with the alarm is that I have to make a mechanism that allows for it to trigger once a week instead of once a day, that should be a fun challenge.
If anyone knows more about fabrials and what metals and gems would be used for the painrials on the vambrace please let me know. I've been scouring the wiki and coppermind for info but we only know so much at this point and I'm thinking I'm going to have to wing it a bit

The watch that I'm currently working on at school. Based on my research I believe it's from the mid 1700's from a French watchmaker named Nicholas Munier. It is a fuseé alarm pocket watch with an alarm function
A large (approximately 1 meter in diameter) display showing the movement side of a pocket watch. If you're ever in south-central Pennsylvania you should check out the national watch and clock museum

we are not born to die!! what are you talking about!! do you think a book begins just to finish? do you think a song opens with a beautiful chord just for it to end? you don’t read the book to finish it, you read the book to eat up the excitement and the emotions it evokes!! to learn and to digest and to fall in love and be heartbroken!! you listen to the song to dance and dance and sing your throat raw!!! to cry and smile and swell with the harmonies!! yes, we are born with the inevitable fate of death, we are mortal after all, but that is merely the finale of the play!! the final act, the closing of the curtains - we are not born to take a bow and exit stage left!! we are born to love and be joyous and yell and move and learn and cry and feelfeelfeel!!! we are not born to die, silly, we’re born to live!!!
This is so violently hopeful and uplifting everyone needs to see it
Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.

I wish I’d known that in school…
Finally a good way to describe RSD to my mum outside of “hey has anyone ever given you some criticism and felt like the shot you in the chest, stabbed you, ate your lunch and blew up the moon right infront of you?”

(I work the floor at an independently-owned menswear store. The owner, my boss, spends a lot of time at the shop, and tries to keep prices as low as possible to help our city’s large homeless population get good job interview clothes. A clearly homeless man is wandering around the store. The other patrons are giving him looks.)
Customer: “Excuse me, sir?”
Me: “Yes, ma’am?”
Customer: “I think you may want to call security. That… bum over there, he keeps feeling the suits and muttering to himself. I’m just sure he’s planning to steal one.”
Me: “Well, ma’am, I think that’s quite unlikely.”
Customer: “Oh, come on, you know how they are! I mean, I’d keep an eye on him even if he wasn’t homeless!”
(The homeless man in question happens to be Hispanic.)
Me: “We don’t discriminate here, ma’am.”
Customer: “Well, I’m sure the owner would want to hear about this!”
(I give in and call him over. The customer explains her concerns. As a black man, my boss isn’t happy with her racism, but agrees to talk to the homeless man.)
Owner: “Excuse me, sir, are you finding what you need?”
Homeless Man: “Well, not really. I’m hoping for something versatile in a dark or navy wool, but most of the options in my size are cut American style instead of European, which fits me a little better. Not to mention they’re all pinstriped, which I really don’t have the build for, you know?”
Owner: “I… yes, I understand. I think we may have some options over here, if you’ll follow me. How did you know all that?”
Homeless Man: “Back before I lost my job, I used to be really into this stuff. I’m not looking for anything fancy, just something I can use to look good for a job interview later today.”
(My boss helps him find something he likes, and comes to the counter with him. The suit is priced at $87.)
Homeless Man: *digging in his pockets* “Hang on, I think I’ve got enough.”
Owner: *to me* “Take my card. I’m buying it for him.” *to the homeless man* “Here. The suit’s yours, on one condition. After your interview today, you come back and apply for a job here too. Got it?”
Homeless Man: “I… oh my God, thank you. Thank you so much.”
(Two years later, that formerly-homeless man is my manager, and has a little girl with his new wife—the owner’s sister.)

I think this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
I am overflowing with words I do not have.
